Hi there, new here...

My little guy had PU surgery about 2 months ago.    He is urinating very small amounts and constantly jumps from litter box to litter box.   He has been on Prazosin (for spasms) and anitbiotics (for infection) and I have tried various litters.   I have 3 cats and 4 boxes.    Nothing is helping.  He also has been on anti-anxiety meds since vet said stress could be contributing (although his environment has not changed).    Vet said could be possible stricture.    Is this a re-do of the PU and if so, is the cost the same?    It seems counter-intuitive to keep redoing the urethra space if it keeps trying to heal itself?    I am very confused and worried about my boy.

I went online and found two great articles 'Perineal Urethrostomy'in cats- at Doctors foster and Smith.com and "Don't turn your nose up at the PU" a blog on PETMD.com by veterinarian Jennifer Coates. These two blogs were very good and I think might answer EXACTALLY what you are asking.Theres also a medically scientific Article that's not hard to understand at michigananimalhospital.com .on pu in cats.Ive never had it in my cats but now I know what to look for and what the outcome is for stricture treatment. On this site 'the cat site' there are many threads discussing this very thing.Go to search and put in P U surgery see what comes up.I hope your boy comes through this okay. From what I read stricture does happen because of the delicate and narrow uretha of the male cat. Surgery is indicated with that. Please keep us update as I'll be checking for improvement for you baby as well as praying for recovery

Loopycann, thank you so much for your reply.    I did find numerous threads on here and online pertaining to PU surgery, but I couldn't find anything where people shared experiences regarding a "do-over" or stricture surgery from the urethra trying to heal itself.   That must be it because he is only going in dribs and drabs.   I will research the links you sent and hopefully they will shed some light on what we might be dealing with.

Poor little guy - I really hope he doesn't need another surgery, but it is looking that way.

Well if he does it will be such a relief for him seeing that he is still not tip top and struggling with making peepee.Maybe the vet will work with you as this is the second time adjusting his spigot:D.:vibes:Sending prayers for a speedy recovery. One of the articles discussed why redos were nessasary. Not sure which one. They have a YouTube video of a PU surgery being done if you can handle it.No telling what you might glean that maybe beneficially pertinent to hour baby.;):rbheart:

I have been keeping watch on him - he is no worse.    Vet said may be partially due to drug withdrawal from all the meds he was on, including anti-anxiety meds.   I think stricture is forming, though.   My vet said he would have to go back to the ER vet who did the original surgery, so I called them and got a quote.   They said it's the same price as the original surgery ($ 1600.00).   I have a decision to make - I have already spent thousands between ER visits and the surgery.   Not to sound cold, I don't want to lose him - but I can't keep spending and spending when he does not get better.    He seems stable for the time being - peeing, but in small amounts.   He does not cry out.

Any update on this thread? My Wolfie had a blockage two months ago. Vet tried to clear it with a catheter but after Wolfie came home he still couldn't pee. So back he went for a PU surgery. There were complications in the surgery and he ended up with a pre-pubic urethostomy... not ideal. He was never quite able to urinate large amounts, and now a month and a half later he is having significant problems passing urine. He goes back to the vet today. This has been brutal. I don't want to put the poor guy through another surgery... just wondering if you tried the revision, and how it came out.
