Yesterday he was perfectly fine up until 10 pm last night I noticed he was acting strange. He's 8 months old so I need to save him!! He just wants to lay down and when I call his name or try to play with him he won't respond. He just wants to close his eyes. And now he's under my bed and doesn't want to get out. He hasn't ate or drank since then or used the kitty liter. I took him to the vet last night and they charged me $80 just to tell me nothing was wrong with him and that to make sure they wanted 1,000 for tests and X-rays. I don't know what to do. I was crying all night long sleeping with him on the floor. When I let him he wouldn't purr or anything and this morning he is purring but still won't get out. He looks like he's in pain to me. I don't know what's wrong with him or what could be wrong with him. He's an inside cat. The only thing that has changed was he ran out of food so I gave him some tuna but then I bought food the next morning. Or I'm starting to wonder if he got a little squished behind our couch. He was coming out of there and threats when I noticed something was wrong. But I notice he likes going in there since he doesn't feel well. What do I do???

Is he doing anything unusual besides hiding under the bed and not eating? What makes you think that he is in pain?

How long have you had him? If it hasn't been very long, he might just be nervous about his new surroundings, and tired because change is stressful.

Did you try giving him treats to see if he'll eat something different? Or if you gave him the tuna recently, do you think it made his stomach upset?

I'm asking a lot of questions because I'm not sure what the problem might be based on your post.

I've had him since he was born. My other cat had kittens and I kept 1. I think he's in pain because he was walking weird when he went to my bed kind of wobbly and he hasn't moved ever since. His eyes aren't fully opened when he looks at me. If it was the tuna I'm thinking he would've had diarrhea from it but he hasn't gone at all to use the bathroom. And he doesn't let me hold him or get him from under the bed. He meows kind of groans a little when I try moving him. And last night when I took him to the vet they said he had a 104 fever

Welcome to TCS vanessasofia. Going to the vet was the right thing to do. Sure hope all is well. Has to be somewhat reassuring to hear the vet say that nothing is wrong. Thinking, just keep a close watch and contact or visit vet again if there is no improvement soon. Please keep us updated. Someone here with more cat behavior knowledge should have some info for you here soon.

Sweetie, he needs to have a complete check up from the Vet, including blood tests and possibly an x-ray. He is sick and in pain. He is hiding his pain from you. He wants to be left alone.

Please try to find someone who can help your poor baby. He really needs medical care.

And he needs to be screened for things. It could be so many things.. we cannot tell you what.

Could he have gotten into and eaten something he should not have? That would only be found on possibly an x-ray. It is needed.

Even string, or plastic could be coiled up and strangulating his bowel.. and making him sick..

He needs the Vet ASAP..Please

I agree with Artie mom,it's possible he might have eaten something. If he was squished his abdominal cavity would be filling up.There no way to tell.i know vet bills are outrageous. Some critical care vets will allow you to make payments, though it's hard to find one. I have a short list of animal rescue places that do help but I don't know how much or what you need to do.Ill try and post it with this post.Good luck ! I'm praying for dat kitty!

If you happen to be in Massachusetts, or even New England there is also,

"The Shadow Fund" which is from the Mass College of Law. They do help with financial funding for Veterinarians.

$1000 for tests and x rays seems execssive to me. Vet ERs do charge a lot but that's still excessive. I'm surprised the vet charged you $80 just to tell you that your cat has a fever and couldn't tell you anything more on the cause of the fever or how to treat it without you paying more money. You didn't happen to go to Banfield did you? That vet chain charges a fortune for additional tests, Don't forget that you can refuse certain tests if you can't afford them. Simple bloodwork should not cost more than $100 and is the very least you can do. Based upon the results, the vet can decide whether additional tests and procedures need to be done to come up with a definitive diagnosis and you are allowed to approve or deny additional testing. No vet can foce you into paying for tests that you do not want or can afford.

Please seek out another vet in your area. There is nothing you can do at home for your cat at the moment. No one on the Internet can diagnose your cat. Be wary of anyone who claims to be a vet online, even those web sites where supposedly a board vertified vet is waiting online to answer questions.

Take him to a different vet and demand they find out what is wrong. I have definitely been to vets (including an emergency hospital) that blew off a life-threatening illness. Finding one that will listen to you is pretty crucial. If you post whereabouts you are, you might get vet recommendations.

@vanessasofia  , how is your boy doing?

I'm hoping you are not staying away from here due to several saying he needs a vet and maybe money is an issue, I know that all of us, or at the very least most of us here have struggled with life and money, paying bills, coming up with a way to get vet care when needed, it seems to come at the worst times too!

So please, do NOT ever feel embarrassed to say you don't have the money, been there, we hear it all the time.

I need to tell you that I feel there is a good chance he may have FIP. I realize it's early on in his illness to put that sort of serious news out there, but my instincts are speaking to me, also many years of TNR, having a cat rescue group and exposed to thousands over the years, with every illness and injury imaginable.

A young cat who suddenly shows symptoms as your guy is, it's just not seen much, and he is at a prime age for FIP to surface, unfortunately.

FIP, depending on wet or dry form, takes on a variety of symptoms, but they both have very classic signs in the beginning.

Lacks interest in eating/stops, dehydration, fever that does not respond to antibiotics, hiding and lethargy, weakness. No interest in being held or social at all.

I am not diagnosing him by no means, and hope it is not FIP, but not much else gives these symptoms in an 8 month old cat.

Urinary tract infection is possible, but unlikely, it's just not seen in his age.

So back to what I was saying in the beginning of this post about money issues and getting him seen, and know that my having a non profit cat rescue group, am not one who uses a vet for common illnesses, and tend to advise home care when possible here as well, but I have to say, in this case I believe it to be extremely important that he gets to a vet, you really do need to know what you are dealing with here, and what to expect.

ANY resources you have or can possibly think of, I would ask, it's for him, and it's needed.

We know you love him and want what's best for him of course, or you wouldn't have come here right?!

So talk to us, update how he's doing, we are here to support you through this no matter what!

Please ask anyone you can for help, it's not going to cost $1,000 that's for sure, a standard exam cost to start with. Get vet to prescribe antibiotics and get sub-q fluids to start out.

The fluids will make him feel alot better for a bit, dehydration is so bad for him and his organ functions, so an exam, fluids, antibiotics is less than $100.

Start there, get the vets thoughts, and let's see how he responds to antibiotics.

If this takes a day or two to find the money for this visit, you really need to start getting fluids in to him.

Pick up a bottle of clear pediolyte in the baby section of the store.

Use an eye dropper or a needleless syringe and get that in to him, as much as you possibly can now, ASAP.

Okay?

Please let us know.
