Aw, bless her for taking this young family in. Is Mom tame or feral? She's lovely and has a nice assortment of rainbow colored kittens to mother. I spy a wee calico girl in there somewhere.

The mom seems pretty tame. My mom said she was skittish when I went over to see them, but she let me pet her and handle the babies. There is one calico, two brown tabby & white (though one has orange on her face) and a black & white. As far as I can tell the black and white is a boy and the other three are girls. I only saw them in person when they were two days old and I've never sexed kittens that young, so I'm not 100% on that.

Mom can't be feral; she let you touch her at your first visit. I bet someone dumped her or lost her--I'm guessing dumped, if they didn't bother to give her enough care to get her spayed. At least she has landed on her feet. She is probably just a little shy, and will warm up to people she gets to know.

Is your mom going to be keeping the cat? Do take plenty of photos; they are kittens for such a short time and we do love our kitten cuteness here.

Probably dumped, it happens a lot out in the country where she lives. She said they might keep the mom or one of the babies. She's planning on fixing them all and finding the ones they don't keep homes. I wish I could take one, but my house is full.

Oh my goodness! Soon they are going to be all over the place! Will the house survive in one piece? We may never know...

What gorgeous little kittens! Momma cat is really cute too, I have a soft spot for calico cats.

Tell your Mom I think she is awesome.

It may not, she has 5 cats of her own. She's freaking out about having 10 cats in the house, but the Mama and kittens stay in the spare bedroom. Hopefully they won't get into too much trouble in there. Once they're of age I don't think she'll have a problem for long I imagine they'll get adopted quickly.

Goodness ! They're all so cute! And Momma is beautiful!  My favourite is this little one! Such big bright eyes and that smudge on the nose......*swoons*
That one's my favorite too! If I didn't already have 6, plus the two dogs, it would be coming home with me.

Once they are 5 weeks old or so, you can start arranging visits with potential adopters. Five weeks obviously isn't old enough to leave Mom (that's 10-12 weeks), but it's old enough to have and interact with visitors. It increases the "cute kitten" time they have to find new homes.

Tell your mom she should charge a nominal adoption fee--perhaps the amount to cover their kitten shots--to be sure that the adopters are serious about taking good care of the kittens. Some vets will also do pediatric spay/neuter, around the 10-12 week mark and depending mostly on weight; the kittens could go to their new homes already neutered and vaccinated, something that would be rather attractive to a potential owner, as well as helping prevent another generation from being born without homes to go to.

Also get your mom to call humane societies, etc., in your local area. Many of them will have adoption days or adoptable pet galleries that will help your mom find homes for the kittens. For some of them she may have to sign up as officially fostering the kittens, but since she's doing that already, it may not be such a hassle. It's worth asking about anyway.

Ten cats may be a bit much for one person (well, barring those who have the space and time to care for them; I know some people around here actually do have ten, but it's not for everyone). I don't blame your mom for freaking out a little :). But these are cuties. If any kitten has a chance of snagging a new home, they do.

The little calico has already been claimed. When she old enough she's going to live with my youngest sister's college professor.
