Today we had to put our precious kitty to sleep. He had liver cancer and up until recently, was thin, but had an appetite and seemed fairly okay. He was able to enjoy the fresh air out in the enclosure ("catio"). He loved the catio.
But in the last few days he went downhill so fast. We knew his time had come. We wanted to wait until tomorrow to take him to the regular vet, but it couldn't wait. He seemed so miserable and in pain. We took him to the emergency vet and they were so kind.
What bothers me is that he was probably in pain before this, and we didn't get him pain medicine. We did ask the vets about this a few months ago when he was first diagnosed, and they didn't think it was necessary, I guess. And honestly, he didn't seem too uncomfortable at the time. But we should have given him something, and followed up on it later. Next time we have a sick cat like this, we're going to ask about that much earlier.
He was such a sweet, laid back kitty. Our everyday name for him was "Bum." He got that name because he was bumming around outside before we took him in. We think he had some Main Coon in him, which explained his calm, placid nature. We said he had "bummattude."
I did this painting of him several months ago, when he was still perky and healthy. I didn't know we'd only have him a little longer when I painted it.
We shall miss you, Bum. You were such a good kitty and so full of bummatude.

I'll probably post some other pictures (photos) of him later. I'm going to do some more paintings of him from other photos we have of him.
