I just got my cat a week ago, and remembered my previous kitten... at the time I was 12. On the way home from school I found a stray kitty and took it home, but it didn't want to eat, walk around, or explore. I thought it was just scared, so I left it do whatever it wants. In the mean time, I made a nice corner on the balcony just for the kitten and put it on a comfy bed... which was pretty much a pillow. In the morning, the kitten was in the same pose as I left it. The food and water weren't touched and it just stared at me, not moving. Eventually, I decided the kitty was sad, so I returned it to the alley (where I found the mother, who gave it a good pummelling and then started licking it).

So, what was the problem? Was the kitty really sad?

Depending on how old the kitten was, it may have been more that it was afraid or unable to function on it's own yet. Kittens don't usually start to eat solid food until around 5 weeks (I had one who showed no interest until almost 7 weeks) so if the kitten was too young, it wouldn't have realised that solid food and water was even edible. Also, if it was used to being part of a bigger family, suddenly being alone could have been overwhelming.

It's very likely that the only thing wrong was that the kitten was too young to be away from mom. Kittens are very dependant on their mom's and should stay with them until at least 8 weeks old (ideally 10-12 weeks) so it sounds like you actually did the best thing you could for the kitten by returning it.

I guess that's possible. I don't know how old the kitten was, but when I took it, first thing I checked was if it has all its teeth - and it did.
