My 10 yr old male cat, PINKIE, has callous on his pink pads that look like they are peeling and cracking. It's hard bumpy white & scaly . I have noticed he avoids the rubber mat outside the litter box occasionally . He is okay with my touching them, so I have heard it could be a vitamin deficiency ? Could it be an aging issue? ( my feet get more calloused the more ancient I get too!). Anyone aware of this ?

He is indoor only, neutered, been recently to vet for a physical but dr & I didn't notice it. He is very healthy per the vet & tests. It's on all four paw pads and I will try & figure out how to send a photo too. It's not an injury. When I trimmed his nails they were kinda peeling and the outer nail that normally sheds off has not shed off on some nails. I also notice he never cleans his paws like my other cats do, but he grooms the rest of his body as per usual. I have watched him in the litter box and he shows no sign of the granules bothering him. My house is all wood floors that are sealed and smooth, with the exception of the baths which are marble and also sealed and smooth. He does like to eat paper ( so I try to hide it). He also uses the scratch posts vertically& horizontal and loves the one rug I do have to sharpen his nails as it's a tightly woven sturdy rug, I gave up trying to discourage the rug thing and I figure it s only a rug, not an heirloom and all my cats have used it as a nail sharpening tool but he especially loves it.
What do you think,??

Ok good it's not an injury, my research suggests it's an age related skin issue, possibly connected to dry environments and maybe a touch of dehydration but the leading cause seems just to be age related bad luck. There is something called bag balm that is referenced in the following thread and that vets have recommended. Check out the thread and I bet your vet would give you a phone consult since you were just in and they missed it. Bottom line, not an emergency and treatable. Worst case if untreated is it gets so bad the paws bleed a bit and cause discomfort.

I think some mobile operating systems aren't fully supported by the platform. Sorry about the inconvenience and glad I could help.

My cat has the same issue but it is a lot worse. It was so bad the dry spots built up and then would peel. I found it was caused by the drying chemicals in the cat litter, especially silica. I switched to wheat litter with no additives and his pads healed.

Hey Miska, thanks for the tip, and I just ordered a new natural type ( corn is the main ingredient) litter through amazon so I expect to try it out by next week.
It would be so great if this is the answer to my little guys problem pads.
