My little miss meowsalot has a window perch which she loves. Recently we are having a lot of ants coming in the window. Is there a safe and effective way to get rid of the ants that won't harm my kitten?

I spray orange oil on the windowsills and it takes care of the ants.

Does that stain the paintwork at all? And do you mean orange essential oil or another product?
I'd like to try an effective natural solution myself for ants & ladybugs and was thinking of diatomaceous earth, but thought that could be a pain to clean up.

Check out the labels on some of the ant sprays There are many now that are 'natural' and can safely be used in kitchens and around pets. They will say so on the front, and I'm sure they cost more, but it would be worth it!

Whole dried bay leaves and 100% peppermint tea bags are supposed to deter ants. I purchase both at the local "dollar store". Don't use them at the same time; alternate between the two. They need to be changed out from time-to-time because they lose their potency.

When I use the peppermint tea bags, however, my cats actually really like the smell and keep trying to get at them.

I will be following this and hope more suggestions are given. We usually have an ant problem every spring. it's been too cold this spring so far so the ants haven't shown up yet. But they come in our patio door and into the kitchen but only seem to stay on the floor but it's close to our two cats food. This will be the first Spring with the cats.

Ants like cat food and can smell it from outside. I had a really bad ant problem last year. They were coming in through my sliding glass door. The only way I was able to control them was by picking up the cat food, wiping the floor real good with my homemade vinegar cleaner when they were done, and using the natural deterrents I mentioned above.

@pushylady, I use garden grade orange or citrus oil.  It doesn't stain woodwork and you can wipe it off easily.  I'm not sure how it would work if you tried to dilute it as orange oil doesn't mix well with water unless it's very well shaken.  I wouldn't use essential oils as those are not good for kitties at all.

When using DE, you have to apply it very finely.  I would use it outside near doorways and windows.

Well our ants have come back as its warmed up the last few days. Only seen a few but that is how it's starts. Then more and more! Our two cats bat at them with their paws! So far I haven't tried anything but did give the floors and counter tops a good wash. Will do this daily. Things get left or spilled easier with a four year old little one. I hate ants!!!!
