I LOVE my cat, Spooks, and he is unlike any other cat I've ever had or encountered, he likes to play with water, very vocal, loves to go on car rides to the park (or anywhere), very curious and understanding, I would love to know what kind of cat he is! At first, I thought he was a York Chocolate Cat, but now I dunno. He's sooo soft, and his tail is so puffy, he's medium haired I would say.

.
Any guesses?

I can't tell you what kind of cat he is. But I am sure you will get some answers shortly. I just want to say, I love black cats. This one is beautiful, especially the eyes.

What a handsome boy! Such striking eyes he has.

He kind of reminds me of a Bombay, but being as his tail is rather fluffy, he certainly is not one.  They are short haired cats. Most likely he is a domestic short hair meaning he is a mishmash of breed which may have Bombay in his genetic makeup.  Black cats in general have similar colored eyes so it's probably just random luck he turned out to look the way he does.

If I were looking for another cat I would have a hard time passing him by!

I think he's a gorgeous random-bred black cat!  - A "Domestic Longhair".    Part of that great moggy majority.    The great majority of cats are not a breed or a mix with many ancestors who were a specific breed. It's very diffrernt from dogs ,  in which the "mutt " dogs do descend from ancestors who came from breeders.

But he does look pretty long bodied .  and it's possible he has a bit of Siamese in him,   like those York Chocolate cats did.

He's too fluffy to be a Bombay   As sivyaleah said,  they're shorthairs.   What he has in common with them is how cool those bright gold eyes of his look with the black coat.  ( Ideally Bombays have copper eyes but some have gold more like this.)

I  don't know if there even ARE any York Chocolate cats !  Someone  in New York in the 1980s was breeding some dark brown longhairs ( and some black longhairs carrying a recessive gene for brown/ chocolate )  with the idea of developing a breed  and by the 1990s did manage to get it recognized by the Canadian Cat Association,  and by CFF, a very old but now very tiny old U.S. registry with a few shows in the Northeast.  However,  the breed didn't ever get further than experimental status with the major cat registries.

In color they were supposed to be chocolate or its dilute version, lilac ( aka lavender) .   but some black cats carrying chocolate were used in breeding,  so there were some black kittens born.  But we're talking  almost 20 years ago  and  I think there were very few breeders involved.

So basically some of the cats they came from probably looked similar to Spooks.

There was a similar new breed being developed in the late 20th century called  Tiffany or  Chantilly  that came from some other random-bred brown longhair cats that people had found.   but that  is a similar situation.      and just like with York Chocolate,  it's more like THEY  came some from cats who looked like Spooks,  rather than that HE  is descended from those few specific cats used in that breeding program.

Spooks is a very handsome cat purely in his own right.   He may be entirely descended from non-pedigree cats or he may have a bit of pedigreed ancestry but it's not possible to tell.

Thank you guys for your insight on spooks' possible breed! Yeah, maybe he is just a domestic longhair , it doesn't matter, I love him regardless, I was just curious to see what he was :)

Hey,  there's no "just" about  a "Domestic Longhair" like Spooks!  He is a beautiful cat.

& I do wonder if he might be DLH with a bit of something Southeast Asian  like Siamese or Burmese ....   At least it sounds like HE thinks he's one at heart.   He sounds like a GREAT cat ,  just my sort of cat,  and  reminds me of my Sammy who loves to go places (he even loves going to the vet!) , walks on leash,  talks a LOT , is very social and nosy and has to be involved in everything!

Aghh, your right! He is not 'just' a DLH, but he knows that, I treat him like royalty , haha. I don't care what he is, he's amazing as is! :) how did you get your cat to walk on a leash? I'm still trying to teach Spooks how, but he doesn't like it.
Seems like your Sammy and my Spooky would get along great if they met! Haha, Spooks is so nosy too! He LOVES going to the bathroom and he walks me to my car and stays until I leave! And when I come back and I'm around the corner and he happens to spot me while he's outside, he'll run to me and walk with me until I go inside the house, it's awesome :) what kind of cat is Sammy?

Spooks is SO handsome.   He's got a lovely head.   I like  this park picture.

Here are some pics of Sammy doing his Christmas shopping at Petco.

I first got a cat to walk on leash back in 1999 when I adopted Louis,  who really wanted to go out to feel like had a bigger territory   When he learned he could walk on a leash it made him happy and it was very important to him to  go out on patrol.   Then I have followed the same basic idea with others. the others.

I first get them used to the harness or walking jacket.   I put it on , pet them, praise them,  give them a treat and then immediately take it off.   Then each day I put the harness on them for a bit longer. & I give them lots of attention, praise, small pieces of dried meat or fish,  whatever motivates that cat.     Soon I am feeding them a meal or playing a game with a wand toy while they are in the harness,   so they focus on the enjoyable activity and get used to having the harness on .  They get to where they can just run around the house wearing it and not think about it.

Then I attach a leash,   and that's another thing to get used to.     They might bite at it, try to grab it , etc.  or just dig in their heels and refuse to budge.     They need to learn they can walk while it's attached.   so if they are balking,   I will toss a treat a couple feet ahead of them so they have to walk to get it,  or use a wand toy on a long pole and hold it out in front of them.   also get in front of them and call them to me.      So that's how we get started.

It's not like any of my cats heel like obedience trial champions!  They kind of meander around.

Sammy is a 4.5 year old blue point,  dual registered as Siamese and and as Thai  The original type of Siamese  were recognized a few years ago in The International Cat Association (TICA)  as their own breed so they can be shown and judged to their own standard,  which was carefully based on the historical descriptions and photos of Siamese from the late 1800s - early 1900s and on the way they still look in their native country.    Sammy was the first Thai to reach the  Supreme Grand Champion level title in TICA,  in the first year they were accepted in Championship.

Actually,  speaking of cat shows,  Spooks might enjoy showing.   You can show non-pedigreed cats in the Household Pet class.  Every TICA show has a HHP class and many CFA shows do.  In TICA they keep track of their points and they can earn their own titles and regional & international awards.   A friend of mine had the top Household Pet Kitten in the world last year ( in TICA) -- a black and white DLH that someone dumped on her farm!

Thank you for that, I will definitely try what you've done, hopefully Spooks will start walking on a leash in no time ! Sammy is beautiful, from what I see so far! Ooh, really? I'm going to look into the cat shows! Sounds interesting! Thank you so much!

Oh ,  thank you so much, chiarabab.    My cats say you clearly have great perception!

I obviously love Thai cats.  And I love Thai food, too.    Unfortunately,  you are correct about my cats' lack of culinary skills.  Sammy likes shopping but he doesn't do cooking.  Anyway he thinks he is Chicano.  ( His breeder is Mexican-American and he spent nearly a  year there before I got him and he developed a taste for Mexican food . Not that that was what he was fed but he reportedly occasionally sneaked up and stole a bite of a burrito.)

Chatri would make a mess of the whole thing.   (Chatri  always makes me laugh,  because he looks SO elegant,  but he is such a klutz and so silly.... and incredibly sweet.  But no,  I don't think I want Chatri trying cookery! )

But Phai-lin?   What's her excuse?  Her paternal grandfather , and a great grandmother on her mom's side of the family,  both came from Thailand. Bangkok!  These cats should have been passing down some Thai cuisine traditions!

Mmmmmmm,   my mouth is watering just thinking about Thai food.  I wish Phai would make me some tom yum soup.

It's almost lunch time here and a holiday, I think I'm going to abandon the couch and go look for a decent Thai restaurant down in Chinatown. Thank your cats for that!

(Sorry MissMitzy for invading your thread with food talk but, I mean, THAI. That's some important stuff! :lol3:)
