Just discovered there is a TICA cat show in South Bend, IN in April.  Used to show dogs, but have never been to a cat show....am really excited to see all the different breeds.  Do they have vendors with cat toys, etc at the shows???

Yes they will have vendors. I think they had some good ones when I attended that show before.
It should be a pretty good show. I think they usually, at least in the past, have got a good gate ,so that would be attractive to vendors.

& I'm sure coming from showing dogs you may find it interesting to see how a cat show works.
And they may even have Cat Agility!
I don't know yet if I'll be at that show but some friends of mine are going. If I do go and happen to bring Chatri, you can see your lilac boy's near-twin.

I have been told they will have agility at the south Bend show.....I REALLY want to see that.  Is there a specific time it normally happens?

Contact the show manager and ask them how they are going to handle that. Sometimes it is just whenever people have time, since most of the cats are also competing in conformation. But the spectators naturally would like some kind of schedule. So sometimes they try to make sure people can do it at certain times. I hope you catch it when there are some cats that are actually good at it and not just trying for the first time and some of them getting distracted. I've seen some cats who are great. Here is a link to the flyer that has contact info, so contact Cori or David. http://www.glaceshow.com/sb13flyr.htm

I don't know if my lilac point Thai Chatri's gonna make it to that show. He scratched his eye slightly a couple weeks ago ( or rather one of the other cats probably did) and it's still kinda irritated. If I go, I may just be agenting cats for someone else.

Well...if you go, hopefully I will get to meet you.  I'm old (65...lol), pretty chubby, will probably have on a Harley Davidson shirt (yeah, I really ride one), and hanging out with a blond lady with a walker.

Are the cats on a leash when they do the agility...or loose.  Gideon could totally do it in terms of intelligence and agility.....but the question would be would he?  I can just picture him looking at me with the "you want me to do what?" look.  He would probably like the show thing tho...he's never met a stranger, and would probably talk the judges ears off.

They're loose when they run agility, but the way I have seen it when it is set up in a show hall, it is in a big enclosed thing like almost a tent but with sort of mesh sides.
You'll find either me and/ or one of my friends. just ask where the Thais are benched or just wander around the benching area until you find us.

Went to the cat show yesterday and had a great time....spent most of the day there.  Got to meet maewkaew......awesome to put a face to a name on the forum!  She was just as nice as I expected her to be!!  Saw a whole bunch of really beautiful cats, and picked up a lot of really cool cat toys at great prices.  We really enjoyed sitting at the ring, and listening to the judges talk about the breeds while they were judging.  Most were very nice and didn't mind questions.  My favorites were the Thai and Siamese (of course), the Oriental Shorthairs, the Abyssinians, and the Bengals.  Had to drag my housemate away from some Bengal kittens that were being sold...lol.  I'm thinking there may be one more cat in our future.....although not sure how Gideon will feel about that.  He might enjoy a buddy who could actually keep up with him though.

The cat agility was very cool.....Gideon could TOTALLY do this if I just had the space to work with him.  He would love it. He already runs through tunnels and leaps through any opening he sees.

That is very cool. I've never been to a cat show.

Are you going to try to train Gideon? I bet he would love it and would be good at it.

I am jealous of you meeting maewkaew, and in liking Oriental Shorthairs you are showing the best possible taste!

We did have a bit of a crisis when we got home from the show.  Grabbed a sandwich, and didn't get home until around 8:00, after taking our friend home.  We had decided to take housemate's mother's car...more room.  I left the house at 8:00 AM to go pick up a raw food delivery and pick up a friend who was going with us.  Drove home and threw the food in the freezer....and we took off for South Bend for the show.  Housemate assumed I had my keys....but I didn't grab them because we were driving the other car (and I had only had one cup of coffee..lol).  I assumed she grabbed the house key.....WRONG.  So we get home at 8:00...no house keys.  Finally found a small window, up about 6-7 feet off the ground, but couldn't get the screen off.  Fortunately....the guy who mows our yard drove by and stopped.  After a bit of searching, we found a tiny screwdriver, and he got the screen off.  We had a small step stool.....and I'm standing there looking at the window, wondering how I'm going to get my old fat butt threw the window and fall to the floor on the other side without killing myself...lol.  Looked at the dude and said "how much?".  He said $5...and I handed it to him.  As soon as he opened the window....here comes Gideon....flying out the window to get to me.  I grabbed him as he came out the window and held on for dear life...running for the door.....then as soon as it opened....running to close the window before the other cats noticed.  Gideon, of course, thought this was all a lot of fun...and went flying to see if he could jump out the window again.  (This is why I'm terrified to open a window in the house...afraid he will go through the screen.)

Must have been quite a show for the nosy neighbors.  I will be getting a spare key made tomorrow....and finding a good hiding place outside for it.

Wow, life must always be interesting with Gideon around. Glad you were able to get in safely with no one and no cat hurt.

I had fun meeting HarleyDiva too and I'm so glad she and her friend enjoyed their first cat show.

She  found our benching area and met my friend Nancy while I was in a ring ,  and showed her a photo of Gideon and when I came back Nancy said,  "I saw Chatri Junior" .   Nancy said at first she would have thought she was seeing a picture of Chatri.

There were some very nice Orientals there so she did indeed show good taste to admire them! .    Some of the Orientals were International Winners  ( which means among the top 25 cats in the world in TICA)

I didn't have anything to show myself, my girl is expecting and  Chatri  had scratched his eye slightly last month and I didn't know if he would be all better by the show so I didn't enter him.  I could have shown my other alter Sammy who was a Regional Winner a couple years ago, but I haven't shown him this show season at all and I just decided not to.

But I came to  show cats for other people and just hang out and see people.

The young Thai kitten I was agenting for a friend of mine did rather well  and enjoyed herself and was very confident.  She is the half sister of my girl Phai-lin

And a friend's Burmese that I was also helping to show made 10 out of 12 finals! .

Cat shows are indeed my favorite place to get cat toys.   One of my favorite  cat toy vendors was there .  Karraway Q. .  and also the guy who does the cage service has some wand toys for very good prices ,  and my cats love the furry ones he has.

I think I'm going to try to go to a cat show. It sounds fun and interesting. I would love to pick up some new and different toys as well. I hope there's one in my area soon.

HarleyDiva  if you are interested in an Oriental let me know and I can recommend some good breeders who I would want to get a cat from,  breeders who are breeding for health as well as beauty.  Or go to the TICA Oriental SH breed committee page  and contact the chairperson  who is one of the breeders I would recommend. http://www.tica.org/public/breeds/os/committee.php       One of her cats was at that show,  a Chocolate Ticked Tabby and White alter who is an IW.    She is in Texas but she's a judge so she travels to shows all over.  same with Toni who is another committee member she works with.

Another good one is Synergy in Ohio.   She was at the show in South Bend and I bet you saw some of her cats.

Some of the breeders on my short list don't really have a website that is kept up to date.

I wish I could have taken him to the show...they let you go in and try out the course at beginner level..  I'm pretty sure Gideon could have done it with little problem.  He already flies through a much smaller tunnel at home, and jumps through the spaces in the ladder on the cat tree.  He leaps over anything and everything.  I really wish I had a place to train him.  He definitely had no problem flying through the window when we got home....lol.

I definitely may take you up on that.  My biggest concern is Gideon.  The Persian and the Himmie pretty much hang out with my housemate, or lounge on a cat tree.....but Gideon thinks he totally owns me (which he does). He is never far from me, and follows me everywhere.   I think it would be good for him to have a buddy that could keep up with him, but would he be able to share momma?

Well that is the kind of thing you only find out when you try it   but it is something found out by many people who have multiple cats of these breeds .  ( or other breeds or random-bred cats that are equally attached / "needy").  A good Oriental breeder will understand that concern and would be willing to take a kitten or cat back or help you find a new home if it did not work out.  I  would always discuss that in advance  before adding a new cat,  though understandably a breeder will also want to know what you would be willing to do to help make it work out and how long you'd give it.  , . and you seem like a very caring and cat-attuned person who would be willing to make sure to give attention to both of them,  and wouldn't give up in a few days,  since it can take cats a while to adjust to new cats.

If you get a new kitten, do the intro gradually.  Keep the kitten separate for a while at first ( which is easier for a cat to get used to just a small part of the new territory to start) and then start to swap items with their scent on it.  Even after the quarantine and initial intro, you can sometimes put the new kitten back in his room and just pay attention to Gideon.

It is kind of an issue with my two boys Sammy and Chatri,  both of them are EXTREMELY loving and attached to me.   and yes sometimes it does cause some jealousy.  but for the most part they get along and Sammy was very happy to have a little "brother" who could keep up with him in playing.   and they often manage to both get on my lap at once.  Actually I often have them plus Phai-lin.   I get buried under the meezer pile.

The meezer pile ( or Oriental pile) is a well-known sight among people who have several.     These cats very often tend to like others of their kind   -   (  I don't mean separated by breed but by what TICA would classify as the Siamese Breed Group,  plus the Thais that are of genuine Siamese / Wichienmaat ancestry.   ALL these breeds go back to the Wichienmaat cats  of Siam/ Thailand .  Orientals are mostly Siamese,  but just with other colors and patterns that initially came from outcrosses.)

Here are some pictures from Heather ( Synergy) including some Oriental / Siamese piles http://people.ysu.edu/~helorimer/faves.html      She hasn't updated that site for years but it has some cool stuff on it about genetics

Just now I have Sammy on my lap purring happily.  Chatri comes walking up,  makes a cute noise and wants to be petted,  I pet him on his little cute lilac point head and he flops over on the floor, then realizes I can't reach that far and circles around a few times for more attention, while Sammy glares at him a bit so I pet Sammy too,  then C goes and jumps on a shelf and looks out the window for about 5 min.   then comes back and jumps in my lap too and now they are both grooming each other.    So that is typical.

Sammy loves playing with wand toys and has a particular game he likes to play that is a combination of wand toy chase and fetch.    but the other cats get in his way ,  so sometimes I shut the others up and just play with Sammy.   I will definitely do that for his birthday today!  (He is 4 years old today.)
