I am having a huge problem getting my kitten Popcorn to eat wet food.

My older cat Minion will pretty much eat any food that is put in front of him and he is on Taste of the Wild and 4Health dry food and Wellness wet food.

Popcorn is on Taste of the Wild and 4Health and eats it fine but refuses any wet food I have tried.

I have talked to my vet and it has been suggested to try a lower grade wet food such as Friskies or Fancy Feast.

I am a little hesitant to do this since pretty much any dry lower grade foods have given her diarrhea. I haven't tried a lower grade wet food yet.

The only wet food she has came close to "liking" is Blue but would only take 1/2 teaspoon before snubbing it until the next day. I tried getting her to like it for over 2 weeks with no progress.

I have been trying for 7 weeks to get her to eat wet food. I am not sure if having her since before she had teeth has anything to do with her pickiness or if she is just picky. She is 10-11 weeks old now.

The only thing "wet" she eats is she occasionally steals my dogs Fresh Pet Select food but that is definitely not going to help her along since it is dog food.

Any suggestions?

Hi LaggyDucky! (gotta luv that handle!!!)

First, a little reading for you, courtesy of a well-respected "nutritional" Veterinarian who spends oodles of her time volunteering online, helping members of the Feline Diabetes Message Board manage their diabetic kitties' health. Have a read here for some 'tricks of the trade': http://catinfo.org/#Transitioning_Dry_Food_Addicts_to_Canned_Food_

As for an easy pick in the wet food department, my suggestion is Fancy Feast....BUT, only the "Classic" varieties - and, stay AWAY from the fish types. Here you go: http://www.fancyfeast.com/wet-cat-food/classic/

The "Classic" varieties do not contain any of the nasty "gravy" ingredients...glutens, etc. .... and most cats find them irresistible!

NOW, kitties are well-known to develop addiction to FF.....so, once she has accepted a wet diet, it's wise to gradually add some better quality canned into the menu. I'd start by mixing some, say, Wellness grain-free into the FF, gradually increasing the amount so that before long you're feeding 100% good quality food.

Obviously, you'll also need to reduce the amount of dry that's available 'on the table'.

I think Fanncy feast classic chicken is a decent food too. It's high protein/low carb and most cats love it. It's in my rotation along with premium brands too.

I think Fresh pet select makes cat food too. Maybe she will like that since she likes their dog food.

Is she free-fed? If there is food out all the time, there is no reason for her to want to try any wet. You have to have hunger on her side in order to coerce her.

Wait.. she's only 10 or 11 weeks old? She should have been on milk, not dry food at 3 weeks...
Since she is only a baby, it should not be hard at all to get her to transition. If you merely do not set any other food down for a few hours, surely her kitten hunger will set in and she will eat.

No neither of my cats are free fed or my dogs and rabbits try to nab it.

She wasn't fed dry food at 3 weeks I mistyped that. Sorry. She was on formula. She started nibbling on dry food at around 5 or so weeks old.

I will give the hunger thing a try.

I am not sure if Fresh Pet makes a cat food or not I will have to check and see. I have heard Fancy feast is decent so I may pick up a few cans and see if she likes it.

Thank you for the link and the suggestions. I am planning to find a food she likes and integrate a high quality food into it.

I can't tell you how much I've spent on canned food trying to find ones that all (or even some) of my cats will eat.  It truly is trial and error and it gets expensive. :)

Speaking only for myself, Fancy Feast doesn't agree with my cats.  They like it, but it causes digestive issues in 3 of them.  I used only the classic because we have a diabetic, but it didn't work for us.  The quality really is low.  Currently mine are eating Wellness, Evo, and Merrick's Cowboy Cookout.  The Evo is very moist which they love, and I add a little water to the Wellness and Cowboy Cookout to make it soupier and more appealing to them.  I've also had luck with Avoderm and Chicken Soup in the past.

I still buy a can or two of different types every time I'm at the pet food store with the hopes that I can expand their offerings.  More often than not, 1/2 a can will be eaten (between 5 cats) and the rest goes down the garbage disposal.  Cats.  Just keep trying.

Despite my efforts, 2 of mine are very resistant to canned food.  They will suck the juice out but that's about it.  I still offer it to them every day.

I haven't tried Before Grain yet. Where I live pet food is very limited so I mostly buy everything online. I have tried the Blue Buffalo, Halo, Natural Balance, Wellness, Addiction, EVO, Eagle Pack and Go! And they have mostly went to the stray cats or Minion if he likes them

I am getting ready to try Evangers, Weruva,  and Ziwi Peak before trying FF or Friskies or anything else.

Well the stray cats in my area have been very well fed trying to get Popcorn to accept wet food. My area has Merrick so I might grab a can or two of that and see if she likes that.

Finally!

Popcorn LOVES the Weruva and BG and will kind of accept Ziwi Peak.

Weruva is REALLY high in carbs. Merricks Cowboy Cookout is nice and low in carbs though!

The types she is willingly eat are the Weruva Paw Lickin Chicken, Nine Liver and Peking Ducken. She will not eat most of the classic Merrick canned foods. She did like the Beef, Chicken, Quail and Turkey Before Grain line. And she would only nibble on the Lamb Ziwi Peak.

Okay, great!! :D
Now that you know what she likes, stick WITH it! If she looks away from the food or doesn't eat it right away, DON'T PANIC!
Leave it down, walk away and let her figure out that's what's for dinner.
