He'e almost 6 mos old. Was 3 mos when I got him Labor Day wkend. He hinted at this very cool retrieving ability a couple times, but over thxgiving holiday he wore ME out bringing a waded up piece of paper back several times. I think it helped that I was in another room tossing the object of his desire into the other room. He just kept bringing it back... It was amazing !! You Tubed it of course lol.

That's so cute! I have two cats that play fetch, no one ever believes me when i tell them! My mom has one of mine that will play fetch relentlessly with her, sometimes to the point where my mom has to hide her toy to get her to stop. My kitten picked up the habit of fetching pretty fast, althoug he's not as agressive about it. He prefers to grab his toy and bring it to me to play with instead of fetch.

My kitten Puck did that with his mouse shortly after we got him. I wish I had a video camera with me at the time. He doesn't do it anymore but I can bear wittness for you that cats do play fetch.

I know what ya mean about documenting lol. After Loco
brought back the paper ball a few times, I grabbed my iPhone and
hit Record :). PLAYING FETCH WITH LOCO title of You Tube vid.
Funny, cuz there is another vid near mine of a black cat named Loco and he is
playing fetch too.

My husband's cat did this when he was younger. In fact, it was the behavior that won him over when he picked him out of a litter at the shelter! He threw a wad of paper in the midst of all these kittens, and his kitty brought it back to him. Love at first sight. :)Cats can actually do a lot of "tricks" and learn behaviors normally attributed to dogs. I started clicker training my new kitty a week ago and he's been learning a new trick each session. He's already learned to Come, Sit, Nose Bump, Shake, and Stand Up on command. Playing fetch is on my to-do list. I also had my kitty on a leash and harness walking outside with me in four days. People say, "Oh, he's like a dog!" but that's so unfair. Cats can do amazing things if you give them a chance!

That's what I want to do, the clicker training. Could you give me some tips on that?

My kitten is 11 and half weeks old and he has been doing this fetch thing since he was about 9 weeks old.  I got him when he was almost 8 weeks.  Cats are smarter then we think.  I am finding many ways that Shadow, my kitten is smart.  Shadow plays fetch when he gets up and right before he goes to bed.  Both are playtimes for him.  He goes and gets one of his favourite toys and brings it to me and then I throw and then he plays with it but a minute later, he is back with his toy.  I couldn't believe it when he started doing that.  I was like, is this a cat or a dog? lol.

I'd recommend the guide I got off Amazon: "Cat Training in 10 Minutes" by Miriam Fields-Babineau. It teaches you the basics, takes you step-by-step through several tricks, and teaches you everything you need to know about 'shaping' and how to make your own tricks. There are other guides out there, even ones online that are free, but that's what I got so that's what I know! You can pick up a clicker in the dog section of most pet stores, or online. They're cheap. And, finally, you need a reward your kitty will get excited about. My cat is very food-motivated, so freeze dried chicken treats work for him. With the clicker, book, and treats, the whole thing cost me under $20. Really not that bad, considering what I've spent on toys they ignore. =PI think it works best with cats that are young, interested in you (as in, watch you a a lot and are curious about you), like to receive your attention, and/or respond positively to treats and praise. It is so much fun, and my cat clearly loves it, I'd recommend everyone at least give it a try.

Sugar will fetch her mousie 3 or 4 times, but that is all.  She might do it a couple of times a day or not do it for several days.  Sometimes she wants to play fetch with a "drowned" mousie.  YUCK
