    Brown mystery kitten!

I see that you are in Maryland--why don't you enter her in the HHP competition at a cat show? She would probably do very well, and she is young enough that you can train her to become a show superstar! My cat club has a show coming up the first weekend of June in the Baltimore area, and I know a...

    Turkish van mix?????????

Quick fact-- The Van pattern is named for the cat! The Turkish Van hails from the Van region of Turkey, which itself is named for Lake Van. The first Turkish Vans were discovered in this region, and the cats are known for playing and fishing along the lake's shores. Before the Turkish Van...

    Turkish van mix?????????

Your baby sounds precious Your cat and her littermates are what Turkish Van Breeders call "Vanalikes" The Turkish Van's pattern is common in the domestic population, and it is caused by the gene for white spotting. There are many longhair cats that have the Van pattern that are not Turkish...

    Reputable Ocicat Breeders?

You may not be able to meet the parents of your kitten, as the sire may not even belong to the breeder! Also, please do not be offended if a breeder does not allow you into their home unless you first make a serious commitment to a cat or kitten. I personally do not allow people into my home...

    Sick Ocicat Kitten...Pneumonia & URI

You should consider taking this to a veterinary school. Cornell and Tufts are excellent. Guessing and checking with different medications for a cure is not going to be effective until you know what is causing the problem. Diagnostics are the key.

    Turkish van cat?

GK is correct. It is done, but not from cats in the US. The Turkish Van is a natural breed that does allow "unknowns" but their origins cannot be in America.

Question for Breeders - Line Breeding.

Are you looking to purchase a breeding cat or a pet? Or just researching for personal knowledge? It all depends on the context of the situation. Breeders may chose to do close breedings (inbreeding/linebreeding) in order to fix desirable traits. Close breedings in a pedigree are not a red...

    Cat show photography

I think Cat Fancy has pulled from just about every photographer out there, so don't use their published pictures as a 'whose who of terrible photographers.' Preston is well regarded by many breeders in your area . . . we don't see him out East, though. I think you'll get a clear idea as to...

Why do "pure" breeds end up in rescues, shelters?

I prefer the term 'hobby breeder' to refer to those of us who run small, in-house programs for the pleasure of preserving and promoting the breed of our No hobby breeder I know would ever call themselves a 'backyard breeder.' The latter phrase has too many negative connotations that are in...
