I agree with the gradual move.  I would do it a few feet at a time.  Kitty will use it as long as you put it in a safe location (for instance not in a high traffic location). If it's only you in the house, then it's not an issue.

We don't do anything special for males at our shelter after neutering.  Relax, momma, he will be just fine.  Let him run, jump and play.  He'll be fine.  Licking is the only worry.  Don't want to open those stitches!

Coughing could be the result of many things. My Coco coughs often , more in winter with the dry air and we know it's asthma. I would not panic but a vet check is in order just to rule out anything more serious.
