I just adopted two six month old sibling kittens that are very frightened. I think they were only in foster care two week and they are terrified of people. The female kitten is aggressive and will bite, hiss or claw if you come near her. The male kitten is docile but very scared and also will not come hear us. They don't come out from hiding until night and then they will eat but they won't let me or my husband get near them at all. I know it's only a few days (we brought them home on Saturday) but I am not sure how to help them become comfortable since they are so scared. We did make the mistake at first try to hold them to calm them and realized that they do not want to be held so now we are not touching them at all. We are coming in every hour or so and talking to them from their hiding places. Are there any other suggestions anyone may have? I'm not concerned about how long it will take for them to adapt rather if it's too late for them to accept human contact. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I will let others write more elaborate answers, as I don't have much time at the moment, but I did want to chime in to say it's DEFINITELY not too late.

Thank you. I am not at all giving up just looking for any advice. They are beautiful fur babies and I just want to help them feel safe.

They'll come around, almost ALL cats are very frightened when first moved. it takes weeks instead of days, sometimes. Females are usually much more frightened too, so that is not unusual either. do not force them to do anything. Sit on the floor several times a day near where they are and read out loud from your phone or a book in a low, quiet voice so they get used to you. Leave a couple of treats on the floor when you leave. I can almost guarantee you they will learn to love you, they are plenty young enough. They are just traumatized right now, they will come around, you will see!

Thank you. I have had kittens all my life that became very loving adult cats and so this is new for me. I realize that all the kittens I had were very young and came straight to me so this is a new thing to see such scared babies! I will take your advice!

Hey, coming out at night is a real positive. Leave some toys out. Make sure they have time alone, quiet time with you, litter box, food and water. That is all they need right now! The male sounds like he'll be the first to venture to you. The female will see this and soon follow.

It's actually funny because at night so far the girl is tiny and she hides under the cat bed we bought them and it moves so I think she thinks she's invisible and it's cute to see the bed moving along the floor. I come in and they see me and freeze so I just have been talking to them and then sitting in the room for awhile but they slink back into hiding while I'm there. I have a lot of toys and a cat scratcher post and tree. I'm all in!

One thing you might want to try when spending time with them is get down on the floor, lay your head on the floor while looking at them. Make yourself smaller instead of a giant towering over them.
