Just returned from vet here in Thailand who'd told me she would order some Porus One from overseas ('it black colour') for my stage 3 CDK cat. I research everything and chanced upon a review stating 'Are you kidding me? It's just deactivated charcoal'. Thoughts?

I'm not sure of the price and guess if it's generally made into some sort of medications, price varies accordingly to scientific findings and whether there are other ingredients added to it to aid cure the symptoms.

Actually I googled it for DreamerRose DreamerRose and also I want to see what it is for myself as I've not used this kind of products before. Maybe those whose cats have CKD may be able to help answer your questions.

My actual reply was not for you, it was meant for the other poster and I just tag you that's all and I also want to find out what the product is for for myself.

I've already mentioned that I've never used such products before and I'm just helping the other poster understand what product is this.

It's been in use for a while, apparently. I wouldn't know I live in SE Asia so I was asking for those who live in more developed countries who might. I don't appreciate threads on every forum being clogged up with those who don't know, so why post? Anyway. Anyone?

Hi T tamsynstead .

The "Oracle" for all-things-kidney-cats, referenced by tabbytom, has coverage of this relatively new product - you'll find that right here.

To fully understand how this product is purported to 'work', make sure you follow the second link in that piece ("indoxyl sulphate").

To date, the only study of Porus One has been that of the manufacturer.....but, it seems that there is current research underway at The University of Munich Veterinary School.

And, yes, as you said, "Tanya's" site confirms that " Its active ingredient...is 100% carbon, but in a very refined form."

One other member here, S Sillycat41 , has used Porus One [post].....perhaps they could join this conversation and provide some observations. (Porus One is only available in some European countries and the UK thus far, so that will limit feedback on TCS.)

"Tanya's" has committed to update as new info becomes available.

Do keep us informed if you decide to use this. If it were available to me, I'm sure I would be trialing it!

I read about this a while back. It’s a lot more complicated than charcoal and can only be made in a laboratory facility. It’s a recent discovery that’s generally known as carbon 60 - because each carbon molecule is made up of exactly 60 mini carbon molecules, clustered as cells in a kind of soccer ball shape. The molecules are designed to attract and lock toxins inside of the cluster, which neutralizes them and then pass in urine through the kidneys safely. However because essential nutrients are separated out at the same time there’s a danger of malnutrition if they don’t go back into the bloodstream. Another drawback is It’s not water soluble and needs to bind with oils to function. Porus one is sold as powder which is then mixed with wet cat food to bind with the oils (possibly to encourage you to buy their food) It’s not as exclusive product, you can actually buy carbon60 as a human supplement/antioxidant on Amazon - it’s generally sold suspended in Coconut or Olive oil with a dropper. It’s a legitimate supplement but it has a “cure all ailments” reputation.

Thank you for your informative post. I have become very cinical regarding pet meds, just as we should all be for human ones now. I had my cat on Renavast (very expensive) for a year and his kidneys worsened. After doing some digging and have a nose for sniffing out the 'Oh wow!' posts, returned from vet yesterday and researched this Porus stuff so did some research on that. One post DID say 'are you kidding, it's Activated Charcoal'. The vet did say it came with another packet of some substance she's always reluctant to quanitify as she's shifty and the clinic's a moneymaking operation primarily. However, over here anyone can set themselves up as anything with no real qualifications but she did send something off to be diagnosed so stayed with her. She did say 'It black colour' so the charcoal bit fits. Cat's already on SAMe, an unspecified powdered probiotic and my personally bought CBD oil, which seems to be a sight better than the cat valium or whatever it was, so reluctant to shove yet more miracles down his throat. Thanks again.

It might not help much but the porus one molecule looks like this - it’s very space age.

My name was brought into this conversation so I thought I'd write an update. My vet put my CKD cat on Porus One about a year ago. I have been giving it to him daily in his noon meal. Yes, it's like a really fine charcoal but it mixes in okay and my fussy cat doesn't balk at eating it. So far his kidney numbers are stable... but whether that's because of Porus One or not I'll never know for sure. It's expensive and now I' afraid to quit giving it in case it is working to slow his kidney disease. :-( It's made in Germany but can be purchased online in the U.S.

Hey S Sillycat41 !

Welcome back!.........and, with what sounds like much better news than you had posted in your thread last Fall. In fact, in that post I linked to, you wrote "I'm very depressed as I thought for a year that the progression of CKD was slow."

Who among us knows whether/not a product is actually working for our cats......cats are unique and there are waaaay to many other factors at play.

Perhaps, though, the current (seemingly less potentially biased) study at The University of Munich will provide more confidence in its use/disuse. "Tanya" will tell

Thanks for your update and info on the supplier.......and don't be a stranger!

Yesterday am my cat ran away when I offered his food bowl. Thinking something must be hurting his teeth, I took him for an oral exam at a NEW vet. He had gingivitis and ulceration, none of which the greedy charlatan my previous so called 'vet' picked up on. She was always trying to sell different 'supplements' at a vastly inflated price so forget the Porous One. My fantastic new vet sends me videos of my now hospitalised cat eating, adding drinking but no poo. It occurred to me Psyllium Husk Powder might help as it's not only a fiber but draws toxins from the bloodstream, so try that. Cheap and easily available at any health food store.
