The vets clipped his nails, but this seems really short?

He went in for his neuter and a booster yesterday and they gave him a complimentary nail clipping.
When I read it on the receipt I appreciated it since he gets very upset when I try and trim them myself but today I was massaging his paws and noticed it felt like he almost didn't have claws at all.
I was just wondering if this is how short they're supposed to be clipped or if this was far too short. ( I've only ever trimmed the very sharp point off of any of m y cats)

He's being very protective of his paws right now (maybe they hurt) so I could only hold it up long enough to get one picture, but they're all trimmed about this length.
If they're trimming them in a way that causes him pain I want either find a new vet or let them know not to trim his nails again if I ever have to leave him there without me again.

OMG the poor thing…I’m wondering if he bleed….whoever cut his nails must have been “new” and knows crap about cutting nails.. I would definely complain before they do that to another poor cat! There’s almost no nail left…

It depends on how far the quick extends. The general rule of thumb is cut to just before the quick starts. You don't want to see them bleeding. I have some cats that I can cut their claws that short without bleeding and others I can barely take the tip off.

My cat has dark nails so it's hard to see the quick, that's why I don't take much off. The other one has white nails so I can go shorter safely. I can see the pink.

It's hard to tell without seeing the claw in profile. Some cats gets really thick nails. Others, very thin. If the cat scratches to pop off the shed often, then their claws will be way shorter. One of my cats has arthritis just from advanced old age and can't remove his own claw shed, and I cut his claws about as short as yours in the picture. I have to, or else the stuck shed builds up until the claw cripples the toe. I attached an example from an image search, but it gives you some idea. I think groomers can go a little overboard, but if your cat isn't used to it, it probably feels weird. I wouldn't worry too much unless you can see the quick right up against the cut or if there's bleeding. It probably feels like taking off high heels and feeling short.

Thanks for all the replies! I do kind of see a dot of dried blood on one nail but not really on the others and the back nails are ever so slightly clipped less. I do think they're clipped shorter than he would like so I'll tell any future vet not to clip his nails if I have to leave him there from now on. He usually isn't happy about his nails being clipped but from the looks of how short they are at least it'll be a long while before he needs them clipped again 😅 I hope how short they are won't cause him discomfort walking until then. He had a pretty stressful day with all that happened yesterday so maybe he's just not feeling great in general. He insisted I hold him all morning 😭

Getting nails cut at the normal length shouldn’t make a cat not seem comfortable with being protective of his nails….I hope they grow out fast and he’s not uncomfortable for very long. He certainly went thru a lot at the vets…
Speedy recovery! 🙏🏻
