Just a little update on Ash.

Today was a pretty good day. I'm letting him walk around more and he's really good at setting his own limits. I did find a decent article on the rehab process, so that will be very helpful.

I took him for his walk on a leash downstairs but the big, clumsy dog spooked him a little and he managed to go up a few steps before I had a chance to pick him up. Nothing serious, he's fine. He slept in my son's bed for most of the day...it's really low on the floor, so I picked him up and helped him down again. Made a little set of steps with stacked towels for him to climb up since he seems to want to go in there so much.

I took your advice dustydiamond1 dustydiamond1 and DreamerRose DreamerRose and stopped putting the Desitin on his bum. The rash is scabbing over a bit and I think that it looks much better. Also, he isn't licking it. If he does and I tell him :nono: he will stop. He's a very good boy!

While he was sleeping in my son's room, Lulu decided that she was going to take over his crate and make herself comfortable. She always wants to do what Ash does.

Right now he's lying here beside me. No more cone yay! 20221122_144752.jpg 20221123_151744.jpg 20221123_192457.jpg 20221123_195734.jpg

That was a good idea to make a little set of steps so that he does not have to jump or lift his legs too much. The little girl is too funny! Little does she realize that he had two major surgeries in order to get that crate. He looks very comfortable now and will probably start to heal.

Yes, I think he will do very well! He isn't walking much today yet. Looks like I now have a crate-trained cat. Who knew? Tonight is his last dose of antibiotic. It will be Gabapentin only now, for as long as he needs it. The jury is still out on that. Four to six weeks seems to be about average.

This is interesting...I didn't apply any ointment to Ash's sore tail for a couple of days. He stopped licking it and this is how it looked this morning. A lot better, I thought.

I sent a picture to the vet and she said it looked like it was on the mend but to keep applying the ointment, so I applied a little and he immediately started to lick. Had to cover up his bum again. It seemed to do much better with just the air and leaving it alone.

What do you guys think?

He is walking quite well. Incision on the one side is really nice and smooth but his right side is a bit hacked up. His right side was the worst before surgery. Scar is a bit more bulky and irregular.

It could be that the Desitin bothers him; he can't tell you, so he licks. The theory that allowing a wound to be exposed to air and it will start to heal could also be working here. If it does not look infected and seems to be healing, you can try letting it be. If it needs the Desitin you can always go back to it.

That seems to make the most sense. Obviously, it had started to heal on it's own. Knowing Ash, he hates anything on him. Still won't touch a litter box if I put it in the crate. I'm putting him in there at night because I can't watch him and there's furniture that he can jump on. His hair is starting to come back in...peach fuzz/stubble.

If he is that fastidious, he probably does not like that on his tail. Cats will lick anything that they want to remove from themselves, unlike a dog who might balk at some tastes.
Exactly! He was sleeping and I thought I could sneak a little dab on but he noticed right away. Good thing is that it doesn't seem to hurt like it did before.

Yes, leave it alone unless you see signs of infection. It looks good to me, too. In addition to many cats, I also raised two boys, so I'm very familiar with lacerations, small burns, and broken bones. ;)
I hear ya! Boys will be boys. I have 3 girls and a boy (all grown now) and the three girls never could have prepared me for the boy.

My little boy was downstairs walking around this morning! He's doing so great, I'm thrilled! Lulu hasn't gone downstairs since he had the surgery and they both went downstairs today. Awesome! I will take a little video and post it soon. Thanks so much to all of you for all your support! :grouphug::clap:

😽That's what we're here for :cheerleader:
Yes it looks much better. He may even be allergic to the Destin and it itches. Is the rucked scar side the one he lays on most? What did the vet say? So happy to hear all are doing well 💝

I think it looks even better today with nothing applied. I'm just going to leave it and check on it daily. The vet said everything is good so far. They didn't even arrange a follow-up visit. I asked the vet at the shelter, and she said if he does well, a follow-up isn't really necessary, unless I have concerns. He lies on the left side more actually. The rucked scar is on the right side which was the worst before the surgery. They may have had to do more "work" on that side.

Absolutely phenomenal!

I remember the video I uploaded of my angel Poppycat had to be clipped a lot before the system would allow it to load.
I am trying to trim a few on my phone. My phone is giving me trouble, not the site so far. I took several today and sent them to the vet. She says he's going well considering he had both sides done at once.
