My cat Loke is a picky eater and he often lose appetite or get tired of his food. He gets two servings of wet food and free fed dry food it’s measured up to 1/8-1/4 cup a day. Sometimes he will ignore his wet or dry food, other times he will only nibble and other days he will eat normal. His wet food rotates between 3 different brands, 2 high quality in gravy and also paté/mousse while the other brand is of a lower quality but contain okay ingredients and no added sugar. His wet food have many different taste from salmon, tuna, chicken, turkey, beef, wild boar, reindeer and lamb majority are single protein. I’m planning to introduce raw food diet later on to see if it’s something that will be more to his taste but I can’t have 100% raw food because I have a small fridge.

I’m planing to switch Loke prescription dry food hills biome to another local brand but I have no idea what’s good for cats. While he was on the prescription food because of constipation. Loke is a stray and when he was caught, he was badly constipated.

Here’s what the food contain in it.

I just saw your earlier post when you rescued Loke. Great job giving him a home so he is safe and not in so much pain. My cats are fed 3x. a day and timer for wet at night
I feed them mostly, weruva, nutro perfect portions, fancy feast classics, and wellness. Male cats are more prone to uti which is whymoisture is so important

Hi
Where are you located?

Are the ingredients you listed for the food you want to switch him to? Some members would not like the peas and potatoes, but I personally feel that if your cat likes it, eats it and his digestion is ok with it, then it's ok.

I agree with Furballsmom Furballsmom . Give him what he'll eat no matter what the ingredients but add water like you are already doing. I read once, whatever a cat doesn't need will be dissolved like starches. Fruits and veggies cats do not eat but no harm in it and some have nutritional value. Honestly, I would choose meat as the the first 4 ingredients then veggies and starches.

If he has constipation, try mixing dry and wet til he eats just wet. Add in churu or tiki sticks. Also add freeze dried chicken or bonita flakes
I would love to only make him eat wet food but Loke goes on hunger strikes. Specially when he doesn’t want to eat a certain taste or he wants something else. At least with the small amount of dry food he can shift between the meals. For example the whole last week he had a low appetite until I found out he wanted to eat lamb and now he’s back to eating normal again. He only nibbled on the dry food and wet food.

I’ve checked him out if there are any cause for going on a hunger strike but he’s healthy. The vet told me that he might just be a picky cat or easily get tired of his food. Why I have so many different wet food for him.

I’m located in sweden and Loke loves their wet food. So I thought it might be good to test it out and it’s one of the easier food to get from most local and larger pet shops. But I’ll look around if there are any other dry foods.

Whichever dry commercial food he will eat is fine as long as he reacts well to it. Good things to watch for in male cats is low sodium, and maybe one with lower phorporus if that's available to you.

You can try giving it to him in a treat ball or puzzle to engage him. If he's not food focused though that may not work.

Another tip can be to see if he will eat the dry food after it's soaked up some water. Giving him extra water can help prevent future events of constipation.

Feral cats or cats who were outside often have a LARGE safety preference to dry food. Dry doesn't go bad as quickly as wet food and is less likely to make him sick (back when he was outside. Now he has you to ensure both are safe!).

Personally, I don't fuss with raw foods, or believe that they are 'better'. But there are raw threads here if you want to learn about them. Just remember to go slow with any changes while your cat settles in to your home. 🙂 Consistency is good for a new cat to feel secure and confident.

A Alldara I have puzzle toys but he never use them and wait for me to solve them for him. The downside with a none food motivated pet.

Why I was thinking to try raw where how he reacted to when he got a few taste bites of raw mest. He acted all excited and it was the first time you could motivate him into play to get the food. So I was thinking that it could help with his appetite to his food. Because he lived as a stray out in a forested area with a lot of farms/meadows he would of had to catch his own food the months leading up to him being caught.

This is the one I have from chewy. Just an example since I'm. Not familiar with sweden!View attachment 436929
What a lovely puzzle toy, I’ve seen similar ones but Loke can’t even handle super easy toys while the more complex which even my bunnies solves, he’s not even there yet. He’s just a picky and spoiled now. Maybe one day I can entertain him with different puzzle toys.
