So for the past few months my 8 year old fixed domestic shorthair male cat has been experiencing some health problems and despite multiple vet visits he’s still not at 100% and I need some advice.
So in August I tried to switch his dry food to a higher quality dry food and I did it too fast and it caused him to develop severe diarrhea. One evening he was trying to poop and kept screaming so I brought him to the ER vet because I was worried he had a UTI. He didn’t and the vet gave him medication. Then that same week he went 3 days without peeing and I brought him back to the vet they said he didn’t have a blockage and did a urinalysis test and said everything was normal and gave him more medication. It took another week or so before his poop finally went back to normal.
Then in late September/early October he began to develop little scabby bumps on his neck and down his spine and began to scratch and bite himself like crazy. It got progressively worse and I took him to the vet on November 2nd and they said it was allergies. They gave him a shot of steroids and an antibiotics shot.
Now his bumps have cleared up and he’s not really scratching himself as much. However he now has pretty bad constipation. He strains when he poops and isn’t pooping very often. He went 3-4 days without pooping and finally pooped today. His poop was very hard and then he had a little bit of yellow diarrhea. He’s still eating and drinking water and seems to feel better after pooping, but I’m just so tired of the constant vet visits. It seems like it’s just one thing after the other and I can’t afford to take him to the vet and spend $250 every month. I feel like at this point maybe something is going on that’s causing all of this, but I’m not sure what and I don’t want to take him to the vet again and have them throw shots in the dark and guess and run a bunch of tests for no reason.
His vet is the highest rated vet in our city and I doubt I would be able to get an appointment in anywhere else in the near future. I feed him high quality food he gets one 3 ounce can of wet food (typically Wuvera or tiki cat) and 2 small handfuls of hill science diet dry food (vet recommended it) per day. I’d like to get him on only wet food, but I’m having a hard time finding wet food hell eat that isn’t fish. He’s had issues with overgrooming for years now (usually just on his front legs in neat patches or on the base of his tail) that the vet has blamed on anxiety, but now I’m starting to wonder if it could also be an underlying issue. He has a few of the symptoms of hyperthyroidism (he’s crazy hyperactive and always has been), but he’s never had an issue with weight loss. Does anyone have any advice on what I should do or what could be going on?

Hmm. When a cat starts overgrooming, particularly near the base of the tail, back end and has little bumps from scratching, I immediately suspect fleas. To check for fleas get a flea comb and run it through your cat's coat. Then take a sheet of kitchen paper and moisten it. Clean the flea comb onto it. If the paper towel starts turning red, your cat has fleas as this is flea droppings which is made up primarily of your cat's blood. Unfortunately, fleas are devious little horrors and hide at the first sight of a comb or hand. Not all flea remedies work either. Some work better than others.

Even indoor only cats can get fleas. Worth checking for.

Hi --try and have him checked regarding the constipation, it can turn into a really bad situation. He needs probiotics, the antibiotics have messed up his gut.

Have you seen his blood test results? There are a couple of more indepth thyroid tests that could help pin things down.

Has anyone mentioned hyperesthesia?

These may be two separate issues, the scratching and the constipation. Ask your vet, if you have not used it, about Miralax for your cat. I would address the constipation as it can become very problematic. I assume that with all the vet visits that causes for the constipation have been ruled out?

Does he drink much water? If not, that dry food, along with the medications he needed, are probably contributing to his constipation. If he'll eat it, try adding a little bit of water to his wet food, and if possible, feed more wet food and less dry. For cats who get constipated, all wet food is the best, but not always achievable. Many of us here on The Cat Site do NOT think Science Diet is a very good food even though a lot of Vet's recommend it.

Water fountains are great for getting cats to drink water. We've got 2 and all our cats love them. We don't give our cats too much dry food (Royal Canin Indoor Cat), only as a snack in the afternoon and wet food for their main meal at night.

It seems there is a lot going on and I haven't seen you post that you had a complete blood panel done. From what I've read:
You switched foods and too fast, diarrhea developed and then he didn't pee for 3 days which is not good. He wasn't blocked. Then he developed bumps was given steroid and antibiotic.

So a couple of things come to mind; get a complete blood panel, possible mega colon, did the bumps start after a flea treatment? Prednisone can cause constipation in some. As far as food, I give mine Iam's hairball control and never seen healthier poops in my life.
