Loretta Lynn, coal miner's daughter and country music icon, dies at 90 (msn.com)

She was "getting up there" as dad would have said.

She provided some of the music of my life. And, her movie with Sissy Spacek playing her, "Coal Miner's Daughter" was also a touchstone.

Rest in peace.

The cause of death is not known, for the moment.

Born as Loretta Webb in the remote Appalachian mountain village of Butcher Hollow, Kentucky, she was the second of eight children, and the family lived in a log cabin with wallpaper made out of Sears Roebuck catalog pages. Her early life revolved around the coal mine where her father toiled and the church where she learned to sing. That hardscrabble beginning helped lay the groundwork for her status as the voice of working class women — most famously through her signature 1970 hit, “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” an ode to her father, Melvin Webb, who died of black lung disease 11 years earlier.

She wasn't a "women's libber" but, she still was.

Women of country music honor the late Loretta Lynn, who 'paved the way for so many' (msn.com)

And, guys loved her, too, for musical reasons.

Plenty of male country singers also saluted Lynn via social media. On Twitter, Blake Shelton lamented the "terrible news about Loretta Lynn passing away" and offered "prayers to her family."

"She was an iconic legend and did things the way she wanted," Darius Rucker captioned a photo of himself embracing Lynn. "I am so bless [sic] to call her friend. I miss u already Loretta. Love u. And rest now u angel."

Billy Ray Cyrus posted a cherished picture of an autograph he received from Lynn that reads, "I love you Billy Ray. You are so great."

"Celebrating the life of Loretta Lynn," the "Achy Breaky Heart" hitmaker captioned the image on Twitter. "One of my highest honors was being joined by her and George Jones on a song I wrote called 'Country Music Has The Blues.' She handed me this wonderful gift on that day."

Other artists who mourned Lynn on social media include Trace Adkins, who found comfort in the "memories of the times I was in her presence," and Kid Rock, who uploaded a photo of himself receiving a hug from "Miss Loretta."

"I find it very difficult to put your beautiful soul, talent and friendship into words right now," Rock wrote. "So I will use the ones you said to me and so many others, so many times … 'I love you honey.'"

To quote her song, "we were poor but we had love - that's the one thing that daddy made sure of." In spite of her battles, both with poverty growing up and her personal life, she was a strong and courageous lady who will never be forgotten. :hearthrob:

She was the last of the three female country artists that broke through with their own solo careers. The other two were Tammy Wynette and Patsy Cline. Even if country music isn't your thing, they did pave the way and make it easier for the women that followed.

Back in 1978, C & W wasn't my thing, till I heard Crystal Gayle and Loretta Lynn sing back to back on the road in Indiana.

Soon, Cleveland its first serious country station, in the early 1980s.

Crystal Gayle is Loretta Lynn's youngest sister.

I was so very sad to hear this, one of my favorite singers over the years. I was lucky enough to see her and Conway Twitty in concert many years ago.

It is kind of ironic that I was watching Coal Miner's Daughter on one of the streaming channels just a couple days ago. Sissy Spacek did an awesome job protraying Loretta, and I was blown away when I first saw the movie and saw that she did her own singing.

"Sissy Spaceship" got an Oscar for best actress for that part!
