Unknown illness in my cat

Hello everyone! Opted to post to see if anyone can help out. I have a indoor male, long haired, domestic cat that has been sick for about 2 weeks. I’ve taken him both to my normal vet and to the ER. He has severe abdomen pain, threw up day 1 (that’s what prompted the vet visit), very lethargic, very stiff/ slow when moving, and pretty much sleeps all day. Blood work came back normal and nothing was found on the ultrasound other than a shadow (turned out to be poop). He was treated for a GI infection at the ER and had multiple X-rays done but NOTHING. I was sent home with pain medication and that’s pretty much it. If anyone has any suggestions on how to make him feel more comfortable or has ANY idea on what’s going on or next steps to be taken please let me know. Thank you in advance!

Is he pooping everyday? I was thinking impacted stool. You can give him Coconut oil or canned pure pumpkin (no spices in it) to relief constipation. Also, I know [now] when my appendix was flaring up for ~1yr, I would present with a deep abdomen pain, but the ER blood wk, x-rays, ultrasounds tests came up negative. I had my appendix removed after I presented with full blown appendicitis ready to burst, but the on & off flaring of it lasted a almost a yr before emergency surgery. Try probiotics thats in plain yogurt. What I buy from Petco is "Whole Life Pet" Living Treats for Cats. It has Probiotics from real yogurt and I buy the Wild Salmon Recipe flavor. It has Yogurt and Pumpkin in it that Supports Healthy Digestion... important to know these live "good gut bacteria" treats boosts the immune system throughout the cats body... the immune system is processed by the good bacteria produced, stored and supplied by the intestines. My cats love them and I store the treats in my fridge. Also, Petco sells pkgs of "Weruva Pumpkin Patch Up w/Ginger and Tumeric" which also 'Supports Healthy Digestion +Antioxidants" If your cat doesn't really like that, put some on you finger and manually give it. Definitely, buy the "Whole Life Pet Living (good bacteria) Treats. Is your cat neutered? Unneutered Male cats are esp., known to get crystals in the urine, (all cats can develop them) causing abominable and peeing pain, lethargy, increased sleeping not interested in playfulness, fever, blood in the urine and life threatening urethra blockage. Did the vet do a Urinalysis? Very important test! I googled how to dissolve crystals in the bladder and found that Braggs Pure Organic Apple Cider vinegar (0.15ml/cc) diluted with filtered water will dissolve the crystals... it is important to do this before full blockage occurs otherwise its an ER vet visit. Every 2 days I put on the cats dry food or in the wet cat food "Coco Luna Cranberry" powder... salmon flavored for "Dogs and Cats" that supports urinary tract health bought from Walmart (cheaper) and the reviews on it were great. I also give them Purina Beyond Wet canned food every other day and mush it down real good and add filtered water so it becomes a slightly thick gravy texture...Increased fluids is the goal in wet canned food plus adding filtered water to it. I also bought a water fountain for cats as it encourages them to drink more.... Hydration is the key in preventing UTIs and constipation in cats. Using "filtered water" is highly recommended! A clean cat box is a must. Cats with stress, change in routine or living environment, stressful environment or dirty litterbox can cause stress related crystals in their bladder. What type of kitty litter are you using, as clay dust or silicon litter dust when licking themselves they ingest the dust and can cause intestinal and/or respiratory problems. I use Swheat Scoop from Petco... Chewy.com, or Walmart also sell it. Did you change his food diet that is upsetting his stomach? If he develops diarrhea or has abdominal pain, feed him boiled chicken with Cream of Rice Cereal or cooked white rice. Or maybe he has "developed" an allergy or sensitivity to what's in his food... highly possible. I like "Purina Beyond" dry cat food as it's completly all natural and has probiotics in it. I stopped using the one with chicken and "oats" in it as I read that the oats can possibly cause crystals in a cats bladder... so I switched to the fish flavored one. Btw, watch his urine color for blood, howling before peeing, peeing only small amts, and peeing outside the cat box. Definetly signs of an Urinary tract infection and being male and unneutered?, likely crystals. Definetly, a vet visit as you don't want his urinary system to be blocked with crystals as it will cause him to become septic and that is life threatening. Also from Petco sells homeopathic UTI for cats... this does work especially if you catch the UTI symptoms "early". Does his poop have blood in it? A poop sample can be taken to the vet. Suggest buying a small dose syringe from pet store or if the pain meds they sent home with you came in sryinges, rinse them out and save them in order to give the liquid solutions (Homepathic UTI, etc., solutions) I mentioned. I always give filtered water to my cats after giving a liquid dose to get the taste out of their mouth... that way, there more apt to be compliant in receiving it the next time. If the vet did not do an urinalysis... it's highly recommended as your beloved kitty definetly has a painful health issue goin on... You mentioned he is a longhaired cat. Could be a hugh hairball inside his stomach... the Coconut oil will help him expel that which could be why he threw up, but wasn't able to get all of it out. Coconut oil is so healthy for cats in so many ways. Blessings and prayers for your kitty and you are so responsible for being aware of your kitty's symptoms and taking him to a vet (who can miss something) and reaching out to cat lovers... much respect for you...

Hi.

Although you have had many recent vet visits to the ER and your regular vet, it is time to get referred to a specialist. Unfortunately, many regular vets just aren’t very good at treating cats beyond the normal scope of general practice. And ER vets are just that, ER. They are good at treating life threatening emergencies and critical injuries, but not that good with feline internal medicine. It sounds like you need to take your cat to an accredited feline internal medicine specialist if you can find one or at least and internal medicine vet or a feline only veterinarian.

Thank you so much for all of this information. I’m definitely going to try for these. They did check for crystals and tested for appendicitis. Apparently appendicitis is very hard to diagnose in cats??? No crystals and no hair balls! Pooping normally as well.

Please check with a vet before you try any home remedies on your cat. No one here knows your cat and what works for one cat coudl be harmful for another.

Thank you so much for all of this information. I’m definitely going to try for these. They did check for crystals and tested for appendicitis. Apparently appendicitis is very hard to diagnose in cats??? No crystals and no hair balls! Pooping normally as well.

Do you mean pancreatitis? Cats don't have an appendix so appendicitis is not possible. Ask the vet for clarification.

If your regular vet has no clue what is wrong with the cat, either ask the vet to consult with a veterinary school or other vet hospital that has specialists or seek out a specialist on your own. An internal medicine vet would be helpful.
