Where my cats are
Happy melty Monday. It's that time of year where it just feels stupid hot and humid and everyone is over it. This is one reason we go back to school a little earlier than the local public schools. We might as well so we can be done early when we actually WANT to experience some heat. Because right now I am over it. I had the AC on full blast in the car when I went to get my groceries and it never felt really comfortable. I was hoping the guy loading my car could feel it and cool off a bit! We actually went a little early to do some school supply shopping and it was hot inside the store! It's been that way for several years now. I joked they were discouraging people from shopping during covid but now it's 3 summers later and just yuck. So lets stick with an easy question!

What is your lifetime total of cats owned?

I am only at 5 if I don't count my mother's crew that are also like my babies. It would be 8 if I include them. The most we've ever had at once is 3.

I used to say I wanted 6 cats and 2 dogs. Then I had kids and decided I definitely do not need that many at this stage in my life; if ever. I think 2-3 cats is good for us so they can keep each other company. I haven't liked leaving Mooch when we travel now unless I have a house sitter staying overnight. I'm undecided on how many dogs. 1-2 sounds good. My dogs growing up loved to play together and it made Mooch and Noodles' kittenhood so much easier; so I think I like my animals in pairs. :hearthrob:

I have only had 3 cats. I have had 5 dogs, I haven't had a dog in a number of years, since moving back into an apartment. I know people successfully have dogs in apartments, certain breeds do quite well in apartments but I decided not to.

Two. Artie and Geoffrey. When I was a young adult, living at home I brought home Pumpkin. She ended up being my mom’s cat; more than mine.

When I was a little girl, we had BoBo. It was as a toddler, that I named her. She was my first soul cat. Such a sweet girl. Let me do anything to her. Even a walk in my doll carriage, and wore a hat!

Four, kind of.
The first one, Unique, was not technically mine - was an ex's cat so when I left, she stayed with him.
Then 3 more with my current husband; Casper, Cocoabean, Luna (Googie).
DH has had way more than I have, though. I bet he'd have a difficult time counting them up.

Hard to say, since do litters of kittens count, how does this work w/ ferals, and how many generations back are we talking? But barring the details, in my lifetime I’ll say six—- pleased to say they’ve all had long lives! 🍀

3 and a half. The half cat was really owned by a tenant renting the second floor apartment at my parents' house. The tenant and roommates weren't around much so we would let the cat in and out of the apartment (indoor / outdoor cat). In the morning we'd whistle for him and wait for him to come running from wherever he was exploring outdoors. Sometimes he'd just be waiting in the bushes right by the door and would happily purr while we let him into his apartment so he could be eat.

Five. I traveled a lot and lived overseas for many years where it wasn't fair to have a pet.
My first cat Fred I saved from being drowned by the next door neighbours when I was six. I'm sure the angst of that got me into cat welfare. Then since I've been settled I've had four more.
I probably won't have more.. I don't know how long my two have, but by the time I'm 'catless' again I'll be in my 70s. I've decided that's a good age to have a vacant house for fostering.

One of my cats came from my mom and stepdad getting married; but she was totally my cat before long. My stepsiblings decided to live with their mom and she was SUPER affectionate so everyone loved her. I don’t think there is a polite way to say it; but she didn’t always act “right.” Like she would walk up to the wall (the wall, not a corner!) and headbutt it and rub her body on it. Her features were very square. A bit odd. She had a litter when my stepdad first had her. One kitten was massive and got stuck and needed emergency care to get out. But she’d ignore her babies and let the other cat feed them. My stepdad said he’d have to go get her and basically plug them in. She used her thumbs to grab things. She was a little weird but a whole lot of awesome too. When she wasn’t sleeping with her face buried deep in my stinky shoe after school.:barfgreen:

Six kitties who’ve crossed the Bridge: Sara (16), Brandy (16), Teddy Bear (19), Mayflower (18), Max (20), and Lily (17)

Two now: Iris (18 and Lily’s sister) and Mocha (8)

Sara was an “only” cat for two years, but since 1976, I’ve always had either two or three cats.
