Since the last reply she's been on and off. Maybe it's just the weather or off days. She is eating, drinking, etc and she's completely normal as long as her brother isn't out and about. This morning I found her in her bed looking like she was ready to run and hide at a moment's notice, but when I got home from work she was hyper and playful.

She was coming back down the stairs tonight almost all the way down (I moved a piece of furniture and she really wants to go into the small little room the furniture was blocking). I had the gate up at the base of the stairs as sometimes she likes to try and sneak to the catio when she doesn't realize Fluffy is in it. There was some minor swatting back and forth a few times as Fluffy would jump up to see her through the stairs. Lots of growling and hissing from Sapphire as usual. While Fluffy was sitting on the floor watching her while she growled at him, he even hissed at her while she was growling.

Overall nothing exciting happening! Haha
Sorry, just saw this.

"Since the last reply she's been on and off. Maybe it's just the weather or off days." - Ok. She does do that. Was she like that pre-Fluffy?

"She is eating, drinking, etc and she's completely normal as long as her brother isn't out and about." - GREAT!!!

" There was some minor swatting back and forth a few times as Fluffy would jump up to see her through the stairs." - Ok, expected.

" Lots of growling and hissing from Sapphire as usual." - Yep BUT it can't be too forceful if he isn't deterred by it.

" While Fluffy was sitting on the floor watching her while she growled at him," - Awwwwwww

" he even hissed at her while she was growling." - Oooooooooo, he had it with her growling..................

"Overall nothing exciting happening! Haha " - They are something!!!!

I just wonder if it is a game to her? She sure doesn't seem to really fear him.

Just be real aloof, act like "whatever" etc. See if that maybe helps get them to just accept the reality.

I'm sorry it has taken me so long to reply!
To answer your first question, she was quite different pre-fluffy however, she was still quite young and she seemed to be suffering from seperation anxiety after being off work for ten weeks. That was in fact the primary reason we decided to get a second cat. After being home every day for ten plus weeks and then returning to work full time, she seemed quite anxious and lonely and the hope was that having another cat the same age would help her.

You are correct in that I don't think she fully fears him, but she possibly has some fear just in the moment. It's been quite awhile since he's jumped on her so she doesn't have much reason to fear him. Her mood completely changes day to day with Fluffy so I'm not really concerned. Some days I find her upstairs fast asleep, others, she's constantly coming to the stairs.

She has also learned how to jump over the baby gate at the bottom of the stairs when Fluffy is in the catio and she'll make a mad dash for the catio herself without realizing he is there. I've managed to either distract her back with a treat so far.

This morning she was sitting on the stairs and Fluffy jumped up to say hi. They wacked eachother a few times before she ran back upstairs and Fluffy went to the catio. Within about a minute she raced downstairs, jumped over the gate and ran to the kitchen towards the catio. Once she saw Fluffy in there (he wasn't paying attention) she turned around and bolted back to the living room but couldn't get back passed the baby gate and was just running back and forth in the living room until I took it down so she could run upstairs. She came down once Fluffy was back in his room.

No new incidents yet with jumping or chasing (once while they were eating Fluffy looked like he was about to pounce but I stopped him). At most, Fluffy jumped up to say hi at the stairs and they hit eachother back and forth, Sapphire hisses and growls, sometimes Fluffy will drop back down and hiss, but nothing game changing.

"I'm sorry it has taken me so long to reply!" - That is ok. I am the one to apologize BUT I now have a new computer and it works!!

Did she stay upstairs a lot? Hiding? Acting like she does now at all?

"You are correct in that I don't think she fully fears him," - Great

" but she possibly has some fear just in the moment." - Ok

" It's been quite awhile since he's jumped on her" - Yes which is great

" so she doesn't have much reason to fear him." - Agreed!! But in her mind there is some caution.

" Her mood completely changes day to day with Fluffy so I'm not really concerned. Some days I find her upstairs fast asleep, others, she's constantly coming to the stairs." - Ok

"This morning she was sitting on the stairs and Fluffy jumped up to say hi. They wacked eachother a few times before she ran back upstairs and Fluffy went to the catio. " - Awwwwwwww. Was it kinda a game?

"Within about a minute she raced downstairs, jumped over the gate and ran to the kitchen towards the catio." - Hahahahaha, was she really cute doing that? That is REALLY positive. On another note, I am surprised she loves the catio but I LOVE that she loves it!!!

" Once she saw Fluffy in there (he wasn't paying attention) she turned around and bolted back to the living room but couldn't get back passed the baby gate and was just running back and forth in the living room until I took it down so she could run upstairs. "No new incidents yet with jumping or chasing (once while they were eating Fluffy looked like he was about to pounce but I stopped him)." - Great and GREAT JOB!!!

" At most, Fluffy jumped up to say hi at the stairs and they hit eachother back and forth, Sapphire hisses and growls, sometimes Fluffy will drop back down and hiss, but nothing game changing. " - OK, their "thing". I just wonder if it is a bit of a game with her................. Though I do think there is a history that causes her some concerns as well. :/

How are you feeling with where they are at? Are you stressed at all? Annoyed? Accepting? Do you think about it a lot or not that much?

I do see her making progress. I think one of these days we are going to get a breakthrough................................

GREAT JOB!!! :)

I do think I'm still slightly stressed however, work and work/life balance is probably affecting that stress and amplifying it. Having to constantly watch the stairs, even with a baby gate up at the base is probably also making things slightly more difficult for me.

Onto Sapphire being more brave/but also a drama queen, yesterday morning Sapphire decided to jump through the bannister while Fluffy was downstairs and I wasn't paying attention. Normally, if he is in the room she won't come through and it gives me a bit of time to react before she reaches wherever Fluffy is. Yesterday however, Fluffy was laying on the ground, right at the base of the stairs when she decided she wanted to come down. I was not expecting it and wasn't paying attention until I heard little paws and claws trying to get a grip on the laminate floor, followed by running and shrieking. Fluffy chased her into the dining room and jumped on her there. There was the usual rolling around, screaming and fur everywhere. As Sapphire got away and ran upstairs straight through the baby gate, I caught Fluffy and put him in his room for a short timeout.

Sapphire his under the bed in her room for about 30 minutes to an hour before she briefly came out and then went to nap/hide under the clothing rack in her room where she stayed until the evening.

They did eat dinner together with no issues, but Sapphire didn't come to the stairs after dinner while Fluffy was out, or this morning. She has been downstairs when Fluffy isn't out acting normal for the most part. I did find her underneath the clothes again this afternoon, however I'm wondering if it's cool under there as it's been quite hot outside and the second floor of the house has been scorching.

"I do think I'm still slightly stressed however, work and work/life balance is probably affecting that stress and amplifying it." - Yes, that is really normal and common.

" Having to constantly watch the stairs, even with a baby gate up at the base is probably also making things slightly more difficult for me." - Yes. I hope you can build a bit more trust and let them be a bit as well. It is hard, really hard I know, but I think it is good for you and what is good for you might be good for her as well.

"Onto Sapphire being more brave/but also a drama queen, yesterday morning Sapphire decided to jump through the bannister while Fluffy was downstairs and I wasn't paying attention." - WOW!!! Regardless of what happens next I LVOE that she was confident/trusting enough to "go for it"!!!

"Normally, if he is in the room she won't come through and it gives me a bit of time to react before she reaches wherever Fluffy is." - EXACTLY!!!

" Yesterday however, Fluffy was laying on the ground, right at the base of the stairs when she decided she wanted to come down. "Sapphire his under the bed in her room for about 30 minutes to an hour before she briefly came out and then went to nap/hide under the clothing rack in her room where she stayed until the evening." - Ok. Not surprising. I was hoping faster but let's see how she does over the next few days.

"They did eat dinner together with no issues," - :yess::hyper::lolup:

" but Sapphire didn't come to the stairs after dinner while Fluffy was out, or this morning." - OK, I am not all that bothered by that. Let's watch her the next few days.

" She has been downstairs when Fluffy isn't out acting normal for the most part." - GREAT!!!

" I did find her underneath the clothes again this afternoon, however I'm wondering if it's cool under there as it's been quite hot outside and the second floor of the house has been scorching." - OK, yes, that could be. And she does kinda like it there as well.

I think it is fine. It is like being thrown from a horse. It it tough but you have to get back on and "get over it". She will. Sometimes we need to face fear to get over it. She will judging by what i have read. Not perfect, not what i like BUT I call it positive!!!

Let's me know how she does these next days.

And good luck on the stress. I know work is tough, try when you get home to enjoy it as much as possible. Sapphire is doing alright and Fluffy sems to just want to play (if he didn't she would not have gotten away).

I hope you decided you can take your vacation if you so chose. The cats should not stop you if you want one.

I will continue to keep an eye on her and how she's doing. So far she's remained upstairs in her room whenever Fluffy is out downstairs. I've gone to check on her and she's just been sleeping in her bed and not hiding at least but she does usually come down right after he goes to bed. Sometimes she'll sit at the top of the stairs for a few minutes just to make sure he's not there before she come down.

I'm still pretty sure Fluffy was playing, even though it was quite rough looking (lots of rolling, kicking and some biting). I also think the only reason she got away was because I semi intervened by clapping and then picking Fluffy up. He was pretty good when I picked him up and only gave one small play bite on my wrist. I also check them both for injuries and didn't see anything so it was just a lot of tufts of fur (they shed like crazy being medium haired cats).

I am going on my vacation at the end of July. My mom has said she'll stay at the house while I'm gone at the usual times she would be there during the day as well as in the evening and overnight to keep them company and feed them at their regular times.

I will keep you updated on how they are throughout the week.

"I will continue to keep an eye on her and how she's doing." - Great

She is ding fine then. Not perfect but she is doing fine.

"I'm still pretty sure Fluffy was playing," - Yes, I can't see him wanting to "eliminate" her.

" even though it was quite rough looking (lots of rolling, kicking and some biting). " - Yes!!! Boys will play really rough a lot of the times. The key is learning the nuance. And watching for any abnormal behavior after.

"I also think the only reason she got away was because I semi intervened by clapping and then picking Fluffy up." - Makes sense. Just be careful intervening. She can handle herself I am sure.

"He was pretty good when I picked him up and only gave one small play bite on my wrist." - Ok, yes, just be careful as sometimes they can be in a "different world" and an accident can happen.

" I also check them both for injuries and didn't see anything so it was just a lot of tufts of fur (they shed like crazy being medium haired cats)." - Great and yes.

If you want to see some rough play look at the early video in this thread. Cosmo and Monty LOVE each other but wow they are rough boys!!!! Cat Introduction .... Failure?

It takes time but over time a person can see when there is an issue and when there isn't a big worry. You will get there in time.

Thank you!
I did go through and watch some of the videos on the post. Overall it's difficult to compare as Sapphire is usually screaming bloody murder and trying to get away, and the closest comparison I think I found was on page 11 (I believe the video was #16). However, even by comparison it seems that Fluffy is quite a bit more rough than that with Sapphire and more energized (I'm not sure if that's the correct wording). It could be the fact that she is desperately trying to get away but overall their battles seem to be much more intense (lots more rolling, lots of fur everywhere, etc).

On a side note, Sapphire made it to the top of the stairs tonight a few times but would run away as soon as Fluffy would see her and start meowing/making the sound like when he sees birds outside.

Thank you!

" Overall it's difficult to compare as Sapphire is usually screaming bloody murder and trying to get away," - Yes, not surprising. The key is if any injuries happen and how they act after the encounter.

"and the closest comparison I think I found was on page 11 (I believe the video was #16)." - Ok

"However, even by comparison it seems that Fluffy is quite a bit more rough than that with Sapphire and more energized (I'm not sure if that's the correct wording)." - Really?

" It could be the fact that she is desperately trying to get away but overall their battles seem to be much more intense (lots more rolling, lots of fur everywhere, etc)." - Hmmmmmmm, ok.

" but would run away as soon as Fluffy would see her " - Ok

"and start meowing/making the sound like when he sees birds outside. " - Interesting. Hmmmmmmmmm. That is not something a cat would do if they were really scared imo.

Are you sure it is not a game to her? Her way of playing?

Hmmmmmmmmmm.

Fluffy is a rough boy. :/ They sure can be!!! BUT he also knows not to cross the line (which is great).

I apologize, I meant that Fluffy is the one doing the meowing and chattering when he sees Sapphire. She usually just stared at him and then will run away upstairs, usually into the bathroom for some reason.

In regards to Fluffy's roughness, because of how fast it happens, and the usual slight panic that I'm in, I could very well be seeing things as worse than they actually are. Unfortunately without a video I will never know. There hasn't been any injuries at least that I've seen.

She still seems a bit nervous but she has been improving again somewhat. She'll eat some treats now and won't immediately run away anymore and they are still perfectly fine eating dinner together only a few feet a part. The only thing I'm still noticing is that even after Fluffy has gone to bed, Sapphire will still sit at the top of the stairs for a few minutes before she'll come back downstairs.

Hopefully more improvement!

"I apologize, I meant that Fluffy is the one doing the meowing and chattering when he sees Sapphire." - Ok, probably excited to play.

" She usually just stared at him and then will run away upstairs," - Awwwwwwwww

" usually into the bathroom for some reason." - Hmmmmmm. Maybe because it is more hidden?

"In regards to Fluffy's roughness, because of how fast it happens, and the usual slight panic that I'm in, I could very well be seeing things as worse than they actually are." - Ok. I think that is probably fair. He is probably rough but boys are. He doesn't seem to want to hurt her.

"Unfortunately without a video I will never know." - Even videos are tough sometimes.

" There hasn't been any injuries at least that I've seen." - THAT is the key!!! IF he wanted to hurt her, eliminate her, etc he could have.

Hello! Back for another update or lack there of, but I just wanted to check in.

Sapphire is still very hesitant to come downstairs when Fluffy is out down there. Sometimes, even after he's gone to bed, she will still just sit at the top of the stairs and peak down for a few minutes before coming down. I have been keeping the baby gate up at the bottom of the stairs as Fluffy will suddenly just decide, I want to go up there and make a mad dash for the stairs. I'm hoping that the gate being up isn't what's pushing Sapphire to stay away.

They will still eat wet food together a couple feet apart fine. Last night Fluffy did try and make a run towards her while she was still eating but stopped when I put my arm out to block him and she was so busy eating she didn't even notice. There's also been some light paw batting at the stairs the few times sapphire has come half way down for a treat. Generally this just involves her hitting him first, him hitting back and Sapphire hissing and growling and running back upstairs.

I am still trying to figure out if in some way it's partially a game to her as there has been times I've gone up to see her and she's quite playful with me running around between the two rooms, yet other times she wants to be left alone. There's also times where she will simply pace back and forth between the two rooms and around her room and then look at the stairs like she really wants to come down but isn't sure.

Fluffy is still the same, chattering whenever he sees her and running towards the stairs. He's even gotten into the habit of just sitting at the bottom of the stairs meowing at the baby gate. Here are some pictures of that and of him just sitting there staring at the top of the stairs (he does that alot, even when he's eating his kibble, he will stop every few seconds to look).

That's great so far and the photos are so cute.

Is Fluffy getting some of his energy out playing with you?

Also, does Fluffy have some kicker toys or a wrestle-fish to get some of that aggressive energy out? It happens with boys when their excitement builds up.

You can try providing some paper bags or cardboard boxes for him to tear at as well..I found this super helpful for Magnus being more gentle with Calcifer.....well Cal outweighs Magnus by a lot now 😂

Ps. The hissing can be play if a kitten, but growling usually not. She's probably saying, "You startled me!" Does she spend time watching him play?

"Hello! Back for another update or lack there of, but I just wanted to check in." - Hello!!! Great.

He is SO ADORBLE!!!!

"Sapphire is still very hesitant to come downstairs when Fluffy is out down there." - Ok

" Sometimes, even after he's gone to bed, she will still just sit at the top of the stairs and peak down for a few minutes before coming down." - Ok, understandable.

" I have been keeping the baby gate up at the bottom of the stairs as Fluffy will suddenly just decide, I want to go up there and make a mad dash for the stairs. I'm hoping that the gate being up isn't what's pushing Sapphire to stay away." - Is the gate up when Fluffy goes to bed? Gates are always a positive and negative. But for Sapphire maybe it is overall net positive.

"They will still eat wet food together a couple feet apart fine." - GREAT!!!! SO she is not that afraid of him!!!

" Last night Fluffy did try and make a run towards her while she was still eating but stopped when I put my arm out to block him and she was so busy eating she didn't even notice." - WOW!!! GREAT JOB SAPPHIRE!!! And you as well to stop him.

"There's also been some light paw batting at the stairs the few times sapphire has come half way down for a treat. Generally this just involves her hitting him first, him hitting back and Sapphire hissing and growling and running back upstairs." - Yep

"I am still trying to figure out if in some way it's partially a game to her as there has been times I've gone up to see her and she's quite playful with me running around between the two rooms, yet other times she wants to be left alone." - Interesting. I suspect it is a bit of a game for her. :/

" There's also times where she will simply pace back and forth between the two rooms and around her room and then look at the stairs like she really wants to come down but isn't sure." - Awwwwwwwww :/ We need her to chose coming down over the fear. Can you take him in another room and hang with him to encourage her to come down?

"Fluffy is still the same, chattering whenever he sees her and running towards the stairs." - Awwwwww, he so wants to play with her. :/

" He's even gotten into the habit of just sitting at the bottom of the stairs meowing at the baby gate." - He is calling her to play most likely. :/

" Here are some pictures of that and of him just sitting there staring at the top of the stairs (he does that alot, even when he's eating his kibble, he will stop every few seconds to look). " - Awwwwwwwwwwww. I feel for him. She needs to build her trust with him. Is there any way you can be with him, engage with him and have the gate away so she can feel confident to come down then try to make it as positive as possible between them downstairs?

Overall, positive. We just need her to make that final step over fear.

Oh you know if they are both food focused you can try treat tosses as playing. Throw one in each direction and let them run around with one another a bit. That will build her confidence that he's not scary when he's moving fast.

I have gotten him a kicker toy but he doesn't really like it unfortunately. He really likes to chase those little balls that are made of the material that gift bows are made of. I do play with him as much as possible, however his energy never seems to end haha.

He hisses a lot when he's playing but she hisses at him all the time and growls at him all the time if he even looks at her funny. They are both around 3 years old so definitely not kittens.

Unfortunately even though he would chase treats around, she isn't very good focused and just may come a few feet for a treat on rare occasions.

I only have the gate up when he is downstairs. As soon as he is in his room it's gone and she has free roam of the house. However as I've seen in the past, she has no problem coming down even if it is up. That being said, I don't always have it up when he's out and about. If I'm quite tired or distracted I'll keep it up, but if I'm able to keep an eye on him so he doesn't try and sneak upstairs, I won't put it up. It's mostly there to keep him from sneaking up there to look for her when I'm not paying attention.

I could try bringing him into his room with the other gates up in the hallway, however he is a very talkative boy and even if he's in his room/the hallway blocked off she is still quite hesitant because she can hear him meowing up a storm. I've thought about even keeping him in my room to play with him in there after dinner for a bit, but he learns routines rather quickly and he won't play and instead just lays there meowing to go downstairs.

I will however see if I can get him playing (he usually does but his sister still ends up being more interesting). Anything passed midway down the stairs would most likely require me to coax her all the way down with a treat, however that may be what I have to do and just keep him distracted.

"I only have the gate up when he is downstairs. As soon as he is in his room it's gone and she has free roam of the house." - Great

" However as I've seen in the past, she has no problem coming down even if it is up." - Yes, it actually probably helps her confidence.

" That being said, I don't always have it up when he's out and about." - Great

"I could try bringing him into his room with the other gates up in the hallway," - No, you don't have to, that is fine.

" however he is a very talkative boy and even if he's in his room/the hallway blocked off she is still quite hesitant because she can hear him meowing up a storm." - Yes, exactly

" I've thought about even keeping him in my room to play with him in there after dinner for a bit," - Yes

" but he learns routines rather quickly and he won't play and instead just lays there meowing to go downstairs." - Yes, he is VERY smart.

"I will however see if I can get him playing" - Great

" (he usually does but his sister still ends up being more interesting)." - Yep, another cat is more interesting. If you can get him lovked on the toy then maybe it will work nicely.

"Anything passed midway down the stairs would most likely require me to coax her all the way down with a treat," - Ok, but I would really like her to come down on her own if at all possible.

" however that may be what I have to do and just keep him distracted. " - Yes but it gets a bit complicated, difficult.

I would LOVE to have her see him playing then join in. :/ Might be asking way too much though at this point.

It is tricky. Ideally you hang with him, play, etc get him focused on you instead of her. Get her a bit envious, curious, etc so she wants to be "part of the scene", comes down, keep distracting Fluffy and she gains confidence. Of course that is ideal. :/ Just do your best on trying to make positive encounters and positive associations etc. She is getting there, slowly but surely.

How are you doing? Able to focus on yourself etc more nowadays? Or are you still having to focus on them a lot?

Sorry it took me so long to reply I'm still quite quite busy.

I would love for her to come down and join the play with him, though highly unlikely unfortunately. She may be interested (more on that later), but I think she's still too cautious around him. She also isn't very playful and has a completely different style of play and likes different toys than he does. When she wants to play she will let me know and she typically likes to play with strings and chew on them and sometimes she likes to chase balls but she doesn't really play with them. Fluffy on the other hand loves to chase toys and then tackle them, roll around while playing with them etc.

She's still coming to the stairs but typically will just sit at the top and stare, either at me, or at Fluffy which is making me think she maybe wants to come down but is still too cautious. The reason I say she may be slightly wanting to play but is cautious on top of that, is last night, a new cat came right up to the front window. Sapphire wasn't scared at all and seemed interested in the cat and was even gently pawing at the window as if she wanted to interact with the cat outside (which was also right up at the window).

To answer your final question, I am doing alright I think. Work is still stressful and the majority of the time at home, I'm paying attention to the cats trying to keep them happy. The catio does help if it's keeping one of them occupied. My main form is stress from them is trying to keep them both happy. For example, I get quite upset when I have to put Fluffy back in his room when I'm going to work, etc, or when I see Sapphire seemingly wanting to come downstairs but isn't, and then she just stays upstairs even longer. The upcoming vacation is also causing some stress.

Here are some pictures of Sapphire at the top of the stairs and after she came down for a treat while Fluffy was on the catio, and a video I took where Fluffy is being quite good for once.
