Hello! New member here, I’m happy to have found this board! We are bringing home this sweet boy in a few weeks (we are waiting for him to grow a bit more, he’s a tiny guy right now). Any input on his color and hair length? I’ve read several posts and now understand hair length can be tricky this early on but for curiosity’s sake, I figured I’d ask. He’s just as handsome as can be and his personality even more so! Thank you in advance!

Fur length - Shorthair. I don't see any indicators that you'd see on a longhair like long hairs between toes or ears. Just normal kitten fuzz for a shorthair. Some cats do have dramatic differences in winter and summer coats, but I don't think he will be one of them.

Coat Pattern - A side picture showing his coat a little more clearly would confirm, but I think he's a ticked tabby. Clear strips on the legs but most of the body is generally blended.

Coloring - He looks grey or brown depending on lighting. I'd go with brown as his color but he's still a baby so it could develop more one way or the other over the next year.

Thank you so much for the quick reply! I have had a hard time with the gray vs brown. One minute I think brown and the next, I’m puzzled as he takes on a gray hue in certain angles. The underside of his paws are jet black but everything else kind of blends on his body. Attaching a few more pics in case they help though they don’t show his side too well. Thanks again!

I think I see enough stripes on his sides to call it a mackerel tabby pattern.

Colors can be confusing, partly because the different associations use different terms for the same color. Brown tabby is genetically black, so you'll sometimes see it called black tabby.

Grey (or blue) is the dilute of black. Color is determined by the darkest part of the fur. Your baby is definitely not dilute. The lighter parts you're seeing are just part if the variance that makes the striped pattern.

Does he have a name yet?

Fantastic info, thank you so so much! His name is Marley. It’s kind of a mash up of my family’s names (Madison, daughter — Richie, husband — Kelly, me). I cannot wait to bring him home, he needs to gain half a pound first. :redheartpump:

Thank you so much! I appreciate every reply — such a great community here. This little guy’s name is Marley. It’s kind of a combination of my family’s names. My daughter is Madison, my husband is Richie, and I’m Kelly. The bonus for my husband is Bob Marley is one of his favorite artists of all time so he’s extra excited about the name. Marley needs to gain half a pound before he can be neutered and once he recovers from that, he can come home. We are using this time to learn all we can about him and how to best care for him.

Marley was found hanging out with a separate, stray litter so the rescue brought him in as well (tiniest guy of the bunch).

Thank you for adopting him. He looks like one of my fosters before that I also grew very fond of. Keep us updated. Yay!

Congratulations on your adoption. Marley is gorgeous. The profile picture where he is looking up at you and the one with the paw on your face melt my heart. Reminds me of my last cat who had a similar profile. Anyway--he already looks devoted to you. May you have many many many years of joy together.

Thank you so much! The photo of Marley looking up is of my daughter and seeing them together melts my heart. He likes to reach out with his paw and pat us on the cheek or nose. He is so sweet! He’s 1.7 pounds as of last night so if little fella can pack on the ounces, he will go for his neuter some time in the next week or two. Then he can come home! For now, we visit him at the rescue shelter as often as possible. He’s so very loved already!

Awww, thank you! We can’t get enough of him! We went to the shelter on Saturday to play with him for a bit. We received great news, he is almost 2 pounds and may be able to have his surgery Wednesday. If so, he comes home this week! I’ll share photos of his homecoming when he does!
