my cat turned on me

we have had Lucy 5.5 years, I rescued her from under the shed next door, I usually find them homes,,
New ones come around all the time, and I live in the city, the neighbor leaves out piles of food, that besides point,

Anyway she is my girl, so loving, follows me everywhere, sleeps next to me every night, and nap time too,

she needed more dry food in her bowl, she was sitting to the side of it, bout 2 ft, I filled it///
Turned and walked away, surprised the hell out of me, attack my calf,, I got 4 huge holes, brusing,
turned around and she was a raving maniac,, I almost grabbed and threw her into the wall as hard as could,

I did not there was a blanket close by I got her with, got her to calm down and that was it,, lil nervous about her now to say the least,,
I want to know what caused her to do this,, never treated her bad ever.. my wife got mauled outside by a cat,

2 years ago her whole arm and hand was destroyed,, I was not home, no one helped her for 10 miutes, over 100 bites, I don't want anything to happen to her next.. to be honest If it happens again, cat will not be so lucky... thanks fro any answers.. I really don't get it at all, its our baby

I am sure this was scary for you especially after your wife’s experience. Is there any chance you had just petted another cat or had the smell of another animal on you? Something about you frightened your cat and that is why she attacked. We need to figure out what that was.

Please understand that your cat was responding to something else, as susanm9006 stated. Please, find the strength to restrain yourself if there is a next time, as you did today.

If you believe that you won't be able to, you may want to consider rehoming her.

Is it possible if you had shoes on that you wore outside, that she was reacting to a smell from outside that was on those shoes/clothes?

Has she been in to a vet recently? If not you might want to consider setting up a wellness check appointment.

ok She chases from window to window, with a few cats or anything that walks by, we know when she does that she gets mad if you touch her.. if it is a smell I am sure we have it on us from outside all the time, and yes she goes to the vet and is very coperative with the vet.. if it happens again I guess she will be gone,

... you want to remove the trigger/the stress-causing issue.

So, can you put opaque window covering partway up from the bottom of the windows so she can't see the cats outside? If it's your yard, can you set up motion activated sprinklers to deter critters that set her off?

Also try Cat Music. There's Relax My Cat, MusicForCats, and harp music on spotify and elsewhere - it can be surprisingly effective in helping cats to be more relaxed.

My Poppycat didn't respond to pheromone plug-in type products at all positively--with Feliway he just sort of hunched into himself 'til I removed him from the area where it was being used (a vet clinic), and he'd leave the room where I tried Comfort Zone at the house.

Remember this has only happened once in 5+ years, so right now I am taking it as a bad day..appreciate all the input for sure, we will see ,I mean also I can hold the door wide open and she will run out, which is a good thing, also tells me she appreciates where she is at, of course she is feisty at times, but 99% a great kitty.. But she will never eat again. Cause I am afraid to feed her, just kidding lol purrrrr to all you kitty cats.. Thanks

Get your cat examined by the vet as quick as possible. There may be a physical or neurological reason behind the behavior. Cats don’t attack for no reason.
