I have been feeding my 5 yr old cats Rachel Ray Nutrish, but the vet said this food is high in carbs and suggested switching to Blue Buffalo. However, I am reading a lot of controversial things and not sure this is the best brand. I am overwhelmed with the choices, though.

I feed my cats mostly wet food and supplement with kibble. What high quality dry food / wet food brand do thecatsite members recommend?

I give my cat raw meat and one dead prey (mouse) a day.
The brand I use is Alaska pet food but I think it is a Dutch brand. I've no idea if other countries have food like Alaska pet food.
Aren’t you afraid the rodent you’re allowing them to eat could have a disease?

Rawz, Tiki Cat After Dark, Instinct, Feline Natural. For more budget options you’re looking at Dancy Feast Classic, Tiny Tiger, American Journey.
This is a good list of low-carb foods with (generally) small amounts of thickeners, too. I wish our cats liked some of these foods more consistently! American Journey chicken shreds are their favorite of this bunch. (Other than Fancy Feast turkey/giblets, which I limit because I've cut guar gum, if only temporarily...) We feed mostly homemade and raw foods because one cat has lots of sensitivities to odd ingredients!

I use Fancy Feast classic, tiki after dark and Koha and some friskies. I do not feed mine any fish flavored and I try to get the ones that do not list fish as an ingredient. Koha does have green lipped muscles but I have read articles that is different than “fish” in the food.

Why do you avoid fish? All Brax wants to eat is salmon.

For kibble, I like Blue Wilderness True Solution Perfect Skin & Coat, Acana Meadowland, Dr Elseys and Halo Sensitive Stomach Holistic.

For wet, I feed Rawz turkey, Tiki After Dark shreds (any variety), Feline Natural lamb feast, and Farmina Boar and Apple. These days I also feed Feline Natural lamb with salmon because when there was a shortage at Chewy, I ordered from Amazon and accidently got 4 cases with salmon. And it was too expensive to toss.

For dry, I feed Dr. Elsey's Clean Protein chicken (the other flavors seem to have more fillers for some reason).

Feeling pretty overwhelmed. For dry food, I'm leaning towards Blue Wilderness Grain-Free Chicken, but I have no idea what to do for wet food. I can't afford Tiki Cat. I was leaning towards Wellness Core, but now I'm reading in some of the forums that this food has led to urinary problems in cats.

I need a wet cat food with variety, including both pate and gravy.

You don't necessarily have to go with just one brand. As long as your cats stomach allows/tolerates it, try a rotational menu.
Yes to this! When we fed one canned meal a day, the rotation included both Tiki Cat and Fancy Feast. That's the great thing about a rotation: it can include a lot of variety in terms of proteins and brands. I also included occasional treat foods: maybe a carbier food (the cats liked some of the foods with tapioca-based gravies) or, before one cat was diagnosed with asthma, a fish/chicken food.

I feed fancy feast and tiki cat. One is expensive and one isn’t. FF does have pate, gravy etc

the thing I find out the internet is it’s full of opinions. For every good thing you read about a food, you’ll read something bad. It is overwhelming and frustrating at times. I want to say “JUST TELL ME WHAT FO FEEDMY CATS!” 😂😂. But what may be a good food, your cat may not like. And your cat may like the ones that some may consider “not good” for cats. Your kitty is kinda going to tell you what to feed it. Just try a wide variety that is in your budget and go from there

Thanks. I didn't worry about the wet food as much when I fed my cats primarily dry and just a little wet food. But, with my new cats and new vet, I learned it is actually best to do just the opposite. The vet said two small cans or one large can of wet food a day broken into a few meals + kibble. So I want a higher quality wet food than Friskies!

Petco has its own brand of wet food, Soulistic, which is affordable. We had pretty good luck with it.
