Is this considered a black tabby or brown tabby?

Black tabby is the technical term, and is used in most registries, while brown tends to be the layman term. They’re the same thing :) I prefer black, as they’re genetically black, and true brown (chocolate, cinnamon) is extremely rare outside of pedigrees

I’d have to see another photo, but I think she’s a black tortie tabby, there looks to be some red on her forehead and side.

Yes she is a tabby/tortie. I was mostly just curious whether the brown color would be considered brown or black.

She’s genetically black, but could also be called brown tabby :)

okay I see. So would this cat also technically be considered a black tabby?
I would call her a torbie and the other cat I would call a brown tabby even though the darker color is black. They often have warm red tones too but not a true chocolate brown. I don’t call torties/ tabbies black, if not black they are dilute. Cute kitties 😻

Actually, it's the opposite. Brown tabby is the term used by CFA and TICA in their registered colors. I don't know about other associations. The Brown tabbies are genetically black. That means there is no difference, and you can call your cat whatever color you want.
