Hello, simba is a 6 year old cat who was doing just fine until 10 days ago he started eating very little of his food (his diet consists of mainly dry food but sometimes chicken, tuna, and yoghurt), didn’t eat chicken and tuna as well, although they were his favorite. Didn’t wake up unless he was going to the litter box or to sleep somewhere else, was very lethargic and was even reluctant to eat. Then 5 days ago every time he ate something he threw it up the next minute, same thing with water. So I called up his vet. He told me we have to get an X-ray done on his chest( he has asthma too) and his abdomen for the vomiting problem. He also seemed to poop small , Once every 24 hrs or so. When we did the X-ray, this is how it looked

As you can see there seems to be some kind of blockage in the last he intestine. The doctor said it’s an obstruction of some kind and it might need surgery, but told us to get an ultrasound scan so we could make sure. We did an ultrasound at an animal hospital bc the vet clinic didn’t have one. At that point he started eating again but reluctantly, I’d have to feed him with my fingers so he’d lick it, and didn’t vomit again. But still the same problem with his stool. The doctor at the hospital said that it looks like there is a lot of gas and something soft that’s blocking the colon, and that it could be solved with laxative solution through a cannula and something to help make the intestinal tame act to work( I don’t know much vocab bc iam not a native speaker. Iam trying my best to explain.) and that we probably don’t need surgery if it comes out. At this point both doctors are suspecting that the obstruction is due to hairballs that Haven’t gotten out. We also did some blood tests

Here they are, the doctors said that they were somewhat good.
We went and did another X-ray yesterday

Please zoom in, it looks like he is constipated because there’s a lot of stool stuck in the tract. The vet clinic Gave him enema and the solution laxative in hopes it makes his intestines work again. He pooped once since, it was watery like diarrhea and it had blood. Warning, inserting a picture

The doctor said that if he poops with blood again it could be bad sign, i don’t know what that means. Iam really scared that he might die. Iam hopping it isn’t that serious. Pleaseeee I would appreciate any help on what to think and what I could ask the doctor about. Iam so lost and my head hurts. They’re keeping him at the clinic for three days so they could monitor him properly. Does it look serious?? Notes( he currently eats wet food with appetite at the clinic, doesn’t experience pain when I touch his stomach, he is a long haired cat, doesn’t drink much water)

yeah, he pees multiple times a day. They said he passed feces today but it is still kind of watery. The good thing is it doesn’t have any blood this time

No one here on TCS is a vet or has veterinary education so you will not be able get any veterinary advice from members. I suggest you seek out the opnion of another vet in your city. Your current vet has the ability to consult with other vets, too, even with those in other parts of the world. I would stay away from web sites that claim to have a vet who will answer questions online for a fee. You have no way of knowing if the vet is a fully licensed legit vet or just a random person sitting on their couch trying to make money.

As LTS3 LTS3 mentioned, this site isn't comprised of vets, just fellow cat lovers. We can't dispense medical advice, only relay our own experiences and make suggestions.

I too highly recommend seeing another vet at this point.

Can I get advice? Is that allowed? Did anyone have experience with this problem. Just want to know what questions I could ask the vet about, so that I could make sure they know what they’re doing

Hello, did they check the feces of the cat? There may be bacteria that cause bloody diarrhea. They should examine the stool. Also, is the cat vomiting? Did you change her food or give her a new medicine? Does the cat go out of the house? I try to guess the reasons so that you can tell the doctor about it. Does it have a high temperature? You should do an ultrasound, and if they don't find anything, they may be able to do an endoscopy. You should be ready to pay a lot and I hope you don't need to. Tell us what's going on with you

Are you recommending another vet so I could make sure? Or is it because you think what they’re saying isn’t accurate to what he has?

TCS members can offer some general advice but I don't think anyone here can read radiographs or interpret blood work results.

The intestines not working to pass digested food along to the rectum could be ileus. That can be treated with medicine. General constipation can be treated in various ways depending on how severe it is. A vet could do a manual extraction or enema if laxatives do not work. In some severe cases surgery may be needed.

No, they didn’t check. The blood stopped today but his temperature was a little high so they put him on another solution to stabilize him. His food stayed the same through all this. Until they took him yesterday to monitor him. It used to be dry food as I mentioned above. But at the clinic they’re feeding him wet food. Even if he doesn’t eat, they’re still giving him solutions that replace his water and food intake.we did an ultrasound and it seemed like the blockage was caused by something soft. That’s why they decided against the surgery so they could try to get his intestines working again with laxatives.

Thank you. I should look into that and ask the vet about them. That’s really all I asked for. Someone who can let me know about what I should ask the doctor about

If you understand English it is best to use that since this is an English website. Many people here understand English.

The blood looks fairly fresh so it could just be anal fissure from the enema.
That’s what the doctor said. We’re supposed to get another X-ray done tmrw to make sure that all the stool that was stuck has gotten out. He’s been eating and pooping watery feces because of lactulose, the doctor said that it’s normal

Sorry about that. He said the same thing re replied with before but in Arabic. That we need to run tests on his stool to make sure it isn’t a bacterial infection. I will definitely mention this to the doctor and ask if it’s necessary

It sounds like you have a really good team of Vets to help your Simba.
And you brought him to the right place...in order to help him.

Being only 6 years old, I would think that Simba will heal well, from whatever caused the blockage and constipation, in the first place.

Could Simba have eaten anything, which is not food?
Things like small sponges, hair ties, strings, even card board from boxes?

I think that they wrote on your report in the comments sections..."neutropenia" and "thrombocytosis"...which I absolutely know nothing about.
But I think your Vets will 'rule-out'...anything that they think is affecting your Simba, and treat his symptoms, before he goes home.

(my female dsh cat, at age 6, also had a partial blockage,...from eating part of a small green cleaning sponge, the Vet said.
She also needed an Enema, (just like your Simba did)...and it took about four or five days...until her poops were back to normal.
The Enema fluid, made her poop look yellow, like your Simba's and very watery.)

(My cat did not have any blood, though, but like the other member had mentioned, since it is fresh looking and red, it may just be from the anal glands, or closer to the rectum.)

I also did wonder if your Simba could have jumped or injured his lower back, and spine, in any way?
Are you able to touch him there,...and do you remember if he did any long or high jumps,...before this all happened?

Sending you Best Wishes, and Many Health Thoughts for your Simba, that he gets well fast, and recovers well. :vibes::vibes::caticon: :goodluck:

(oh, one last thing,..you mentioned that the doctors thought it was from hairballs, and that Simba is a long haired cat.
Does he shed a lot of fur, at this time of year, and do you brush him daily...with a 'furminator type of cat brush, or slicker type of cat brush'.?)
The only reason I ask, is because if your Simba, loves to groom, and swallows a lot of fur, you may ask your Vet, if getting a 'lion cut for your cat' would help at all. Especially if he vomits hairballs, too,...or you see a lot of fur...in his poop.)
