That's great you got outside. It's good to get fresh air. About your sidewalks, doesn't the city salt them?

I've gone for a few walks this week. Yesterday was really warm, so I wore sneakers and a spring jacket. Today back to winter coat and gloves though. But it is still March, so can't really complain.
No salt on sidewalks at least now anyway and if there was it would just wash off anyway in the rivers of snow melt we still have. Our side walk situation is sort of strange anyway. Some blocks have sidewalks, some don’t and in some cases the sidewalk ends in the middle of the block. Don’t know what the reason is but if you start walking on a sidewalk you will probably have to switch to the road at some point. Low traffic residential area though.

I wish we had sidewalks...I read an article that said you can be underweight but still flabby. It's because of muscle loss. That must be what happened to me. It's hard for me to shave my armpits, I can't even get to the hair because it looks like my underarm kinda turned in? Gross and hard to explain, I know...

We have weird sidewalks like that too. But the city keeps them well salted, well most of the time. Hopefully your snow will be gone soon.

I'll preface this by saying "you know I'm a worrier", and for that reason I can't not comment.

I know you don't want your doctor telling you what to do, i.e. move out of where you are, however, I feel you need to figure out why you lost weight. It could be thyroid. Or diabetes, which despite eating plenty of calories, uncontrolled diabetes will cause continued weight loss. But only a blood test can determine that.

So please, hon, consider contacting your doctor and making an appointment. Being physically healthy is just as important for your overall heath as being mentally healthy. And you need to find out why your losing weight. :redheartpump: 🤗 :redheartpump:🤗:redheartpump:🤗:redheartpump:

We have the same sidewalk situation in my neighborhood as well. I wonder what on earth they were thinking when they planned the neighborhood.

Also seconding rubysmama rubysmama about you needing to get checked out M maggiedemi . I know you both want to leave, and don't, because it's scary and what you know, but I don't think you'll get better where you are. We all worry and care about you.

It’s like the city just got tired or confused at some point. We also have some blocks with mailboxes at the street and others like mine 😀 where we still get mail delivered to our door.

She said that I don't eat enough protein.
I've tried to replace a lot of the carbs in my diet with protein over the past 12 months. I only eat plant-based protein, but it's made a huge difference. My skin, hair and nails are looking a lot better for it. Carbs slow you down, protein gives you a lot more energy and helps build up muscle. Try snacking on a handful of nuts just after you walk. Muscles try to rebuild and repair themselves right after exercise.

I did 90 minutes yoga and a 1 hour walk on Wednesday, 90 minutes of yoga on Thursday, 45 minutes of yoga on Friday and 90 minutes yoga yesterday. I've been working on arm balances this week.

Heading out for a walk now

Norachan Norachan : that's interesting that you've seen a difference in your hair, skin and nails since adding more protein to your diet. I'm sure I would benefit from eating more protein. You mention eating nuts after walking. What other vegetarian protein sources have you added to your diet?

Back to walking, I've walked the last 2 days. Hopefully I'll make it 3 in a row today.

I think the benefits are coming from cutting back on the carbs as much as adding the extra protein. I've read that sugar is really bad for your skin. Eating a lot of sugar actually makes you look older as it damages your skins elasticity and ability to repair itself.

For about 2 months I cut out all carbs except for fruit. I stopped drinking fruit juice because I realised how high in sugar it was. Now I allow myself carbs once a week, usually rice or nan. I don't eat the bread over here, it's so sweet. Japanese bread is just one step away from cake.

I usually have fruit salad with a soy yogurt and a handful of nuts for breakfast. I snack on nuts and fruit throughout the day if I feel hungry, then I have something like spinach with fried tofu, steamed vegetables, salad or vegetable soup with tofu for dinner. I drink lots of soy milk too. My only "sin" is a big spoonful of sugar in my morning coffee, but I can't live without that.

90 minutes walk and one hour of yoga yesterday. 90 minutes yoga today.

No wonder I look so old and haggard. I thought that was just being the parent to a toddler.

I already had all those blood tests. My thyroid is perfect.
There could be a change, though.

But also, as I continue to worry about your weight loss, and what's causing it, I remembered you've been vegetarian a couple years now, and it's possible that either your iron or B-12 levels might be low. So getting a blood test to check them might be good. Both of those can be hard for vegetarians to maintain at healthy levels, particularly iron for women under 50.

And a B-12 deficiency can be serious, and even non-reversible if it goes on too long. And some people can't get enough B-12 from food, or even multi vitamins, and need regular B-12 shots.

Vitamin B12 Deficiency Anemia

I don't eat snacks, just 2 big meals. I probably should add some vegetarian lunch meat to my sammiches. I eat beans, nuts, nut butters, nut milks, but I guess it isn't enough protein.
I'm guessing that from all your years of trying to lose weight, you instinctively now think of snacking as a bad thing. But when you're trying to gain weight, every calorie you can squeeze into your daily eating will help.

So a few nuts, as Norachan Norachan suggested. Or some greek yogurt, or other high protein yogurt. Or even a few crackers and peanut butter. Nothing that will fill your stomach so much that you can't eat lunch or dinner.

They say eating an extra 100 calories a day can lead to a 10 pound weight gain in a year.

Here's a chart with some snack suggestions:

Yeah, sugar. So bad for us, but oh so good. 🍫 🍪🍰🍦

Back to the thread topic, didn't get out for a walk yesterday, as I did a lot of inside housecleaning. So some movement, and the house looks shiny and clean, and mostly fur-free.

Wasn't sure about a walk today, as it was raining earlier, but now the sun's out, so maybe I can fit a walk in between doing all my Wordle-like puzzles.

No, she said all my vitamin levels were perfect. I take vitamins. She just said I don't eat enough. I won't eat snacks, but I will add some protein to my 2 meals. Thanks for the chart, those are my favorite foods mostly, minus the chocolate. I hate yogurt. I'll try almond milk and soy yogurt if I can find it. Coconut milk yogurt was disgusting.

I know I'm probably getting on your nerves, but back to B12 for a second. When someone becomes vegetarian, after eating meat all their life, they have a store of B12 in their body. It can take several months, even years to deplete that store. So a blood test months ago could show a perfect level, but if it's continuing to deplete, it could eventually become a deficiency. And sometimes vitamins aren't enough to keep B12 at a normal level, and B12 shots are needed. I know someone who needs B12 shots regularly (they eat meat but can't absorb B12 from food), and they say they get extremely tired when they're due for their next shot, and they feel more energized almost immediately. I'm obviously not a doctor, just a chronic worrier, so please Google all you can on B12, as it is a very real health concern for vegetarians/vegans. Hugs...

I went to Stroller strides today, then went to the park with J. Does pushing her on the swing and following her around count as exercise?

Definitely.

I ended up going out for a short walk. Only 15 minutes, as the wind was cold and I didn't wear a hat. Hopefully tomorrow will be warmer, though the forecast is showing flurries, so probably not. :cold:

I've said this before, but I really need to try tofu again.
Have you tried yakidofu, deep fried tofu? It's great in stir fries or salads. I have a good vegan spring roll recipe that uses fried tofu, if you're interested. The deep fried stuff is a firmer texture than regular tofu and goes really well with sauces and dressings.

It snowed again here today. :bawling2: Only about 15 cm, but that's no joke the day after spring equinox. I went for a walk anyway though. One hour of yoga and an hour walk today.

I've not only never tried yakidofu, I've never even heard of it. Is it something you buy already deep fried, or do you deep fry it yourself. It was the soft texture of tofu I didn't care for the one time I tried it, so deep frying probably would make it crispier. And, of course, less healthy.

Sure, I'm interested in the spring roll recipe, as that's the other thing, I don't which recipes that use tofu are good ones.

Oh no. Snow in spring is nice. :( We don't have any, but it's really cold and windy today, so don't think I'll be going for a walk.

It comes ready fried. It's firmer than other tofu and tastes better too. You can get tofu steaks that look like this.

and you can also get deep fried tofu pockets that you can cut open and fill with veges and stuff. Do you have any Asian supermarkets near you? They'll probably sell it and the staff will be able to tell you which kind is which.

These are the spring rolls with peanut sauce. These are so good in the summer. (Sob. I miss summer.)

Healthy Vegan Spring Rolls with Peanut Sauce Recipe

My exercise on Wednesday was shoveling snow and 30 minutes yoga. I did 90 minutes of yoga on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and a 90 minute walk and one hour of yoga again today. It rained heavily last night so the snow has all gone. Hopefully that's the last of it for this year.

:crossfingers:
