We've only just had to post this, but it looks like people need another reminder:

Another reminder, MASKS DO NOT PREVENT YOU FROM GETTING THE VIRUS, they help to prevent you from spreading it. If you notice all the info from the experts they always say a mask slows the transmission. They slow down the transmission of the virus according to what material they are. Flu viruses are so tiny they pass through most pores of a mask. They also settle on your hands and clothes and just wait. My daughter now has Covid and ALWAYS wears a mask, washes her hands all the time, and very rarely goes anywhere. I am just so thankful the new strain is mild.

I was officially out of isolation on January 4 but didn't get better until around this time last week. I've had an LFT and am Coronavirus free, and went outside for the first time in a few weeks on Sunday - I'd forgotten what the outside was like! :D My mother tested positive around a similar time as she lives with me, but has since recovered too. A close friend who I did see just before Christmas has also just tested positive and is isolating - she has mild common cold symptoms at the moment.

I am glad you and your mother have gotten through this. I think most of us will have this at some point. Some of us probably already have had it and don't know it. This is the time of the year when sniffles and scratchy throats are common.

I found out that my co-worker tested positive on Friday, and he was at work today. He was told that as long as he feels ok he can come to work. So I guess they've just decided to let it run wild? I suppose there isn't really a better way to do it at this point. But of course now I'm going to analyze every symptom: hmm, I had a headache on Saturday and today my throat feels a little scratchy. . .and how much is hypochondria?

Also, the state CDC site said that there have been only 27 cases of Omicron verified in the state and that Delta is still dominant here. But then what's the highly contagious mostly-mild illness going around that's making people test positive? Hmm. Maybe everybody with Omicron did a home test.

But at least the most recent infographic from the hospital looks good for boostered people (about 30% of previously-vaccinated people have gotten their booster at this point):

I think a lot of people with Omicron aren't seeking medical attention. I know I don't go in every time I have a cold, all that does is spread it around and there is nothing that can be done for it. Only the samples taken for the PCR test are sequenced to know which variant it is.

Ohio has peaked and is dropping off much faster than previous surges. We were having 20,000 new infections a day. Yesterday was 4,400 and the past 7-day average is at 9,000.

At home Covid test kits seem to be easier to find in stores now. I just looked at CVS.com and it has several brand of kits listed as available at the local store (not sure how often that status is updated) and you can also purchase directly from the web site.

No shortage of home test over here, there's plenty everywhere, both nasal and oral, at about €5 each.

Did anyone order them from the government? I placed my order the first day they were available and haven't gotten them yet.

It's good to know they are available more widely for purchase; I haven't been tracking that super closely. At home tests I think you really need to take in daily succession as it may not pick it up one day but will the next, so those four free ones wouldn't last very long even for one person.

Numbers are going down here. Still higher than they were even at our peak, but trending downward so everyone has decided it's back to business as usual.

We did but haven’t gotten them yet. I read that they were going to start sending them at the end of January. Mass mailings of this magnitude are mind boggling.

A bunch were in the mail here today. So they're getting out, if a bit slowly. I've heard they're having trouble finding employees to pack and prepare the parcels.

My sister's friend is currently in the hospital with covid. She's vaccinated but no booster. Her daughter got it first, but they couldn't find any more of the tests to test the mom. My sister's friend has some underlying conditions and went too long before seeking help. She ended up with A-Fib and what they thought might be a blood clot in her lung. Fortunately, no blood clod and her heart rate is going down. She expectes to in the hospital about a week. So...please get vaccinated if you aren't. Please get the booster if you haven't. And if you start feeling bad, don't just figure it's the flu, get help right away. And don't assume it's going to be mild for everyone.

I have not yet. There's a thread about the free kits here: https://thecatsite.com/threads/if-you-want-free-covid-tests.439521/ It seems like hard hit areas and seniors and others who are at risk are prioritized first but who knows? You're supposed to get a USPS tracking number when your kit ships.

I heard on a NPR news segment that the US government doesn't even have all of the test kits they ordered in hand. What they do have on hand is being shipped out now. More kits have to be made (by several different manufacturers) and delivered to the government who then has the USPS package and ship them out. So it'll likely be awhile before everyone who requested a test kit will receive theirs. I believe it was this:

Not sure why it shows up like that. Click on that to go to the transcript.
