Hi everyone, I’m gonna try to be super detailed about this so I know I don’t miss out any details that might be important. My adult cat (1year+) has been eating the same cat food since she was a kitten and she’s been fine on it. It’s organic, salt free, and has no artificial flavors.
Last month while scrolling through the shopping app I buy my cat food from, I came across this new brand that says it’s grain free and has no artificial colors and flavors, it doesn’t say salt free but I thought grain free was better than salt free. It’s the same price range as my cat’s old food so I wanted to give it a try.
When it arrived, I didn’t feed her the new food entirely. I started her with 1/4 of the new food and 3/4 of the old. Then 1/2 of each. This happened in the course of a week. Before finally transitioning fully to the new one. Her poop hasn’t been the best consistency since then. It’s whole but it’s mushy and not as firm as her old stool when she was eating her old food. I thought maybe I had to wait another week for her to adjust so I waited another week but still no change and it was still mushy.
I decided to get her back to her old cat food cause I didn’t like her mushy poop. I started on half of each right away, instead of 1/4. I don’t know if this is bad but I started it at lunch time (12pm) for her. I also fed her on snack time (around 4pm). Then by dinner time (8pm) she didn’t want to eat anymore. Then a few more hours after her dinner time she pooped diarrhea. By midnight, she vomited all the food that she ate and even the water she drank. She still drank water again after her vomiting, though she didn’t want to eat. But now in the morning, I woke up right before she was about to poop. And then when she pooped it was reddish. It had blood on it, the kind that’s lower on the instestines since it’s red and not black.
My cat is an indoor cat, she has never set foot outside our house since she was a kitten. She has never gotten seriously sick before except for 2 fevers (1 when she was 3 months old and another when she was 8 months old, both times she got better less than a week). But other than those she’s generally healthy. I have rescued cats that are staying at our fully enclosed rooftop garden but the cat I’m posting about is the only one who stays inside our house. Actually she’s only staying in my bedroom, I don’t even let her out my bedroom. My family is also super clean, we never bring shoes or slippers inside, we don’t even go out because of the virus, and we clean our floors daily with Lysol. So if she’s sick with an infection or virus I don’t know where she could get it.
I just wanted to ask if I should I be worried about blood in her stool or is this just caused by her change in diet and diarrhea. I searched online and it’s there on the list of possible causes of blood in stool. My family says I should observe her first for a day and if it persists I bring her to the vet. She’s still drinking and ate breakfast (I fed the new cat food without mixing her old one) and doesn’t seem lethargic. But I’m really worried it’s something serious, like parvo. I also want to know if I should still continue with transitioning her back to her old food or if I should stay with her new food instead while she’s sick. Or should I feed her recovery food?
Sorry if my post is super long. Hope you guys can help.
