(50 - 60 dB is the loudness of your average human conversational voice, measured from arm's length.)
(85 dB is the legal limit, set by OSHA, for noise in machine shops or factories. Above 85 dB, hearing protection is mandatory.)
( 100 dB is the loudness of the sound of a firetruck siren.)
I brought one
This is what I ordered

What I got https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004QGO334/?tag=thecatsite

Regardless, its waaaaayyyy too LOUD!! Any recommendations? Lots of them dont list the sound level so Idk which to get

Ooh! You got the big one! :eek3:

That's the kind people use on boats. Yeah, that'll be loud enough to make your cat stick to the ceiling! ;)

There is also a smaller kind like this:

It's smaller. Practically pocket sized. Or, at least, the size you can carry in a purse or knapsack.

That's the kind we got my MIL until she used it all up.

Y'know... As I think about it, you might even be able to use a police whistle:

So it also depends on the size?I tested it, in my room, and my cat running to me🤦‍♀️

Why not put your cat in a harness inside the house? That way there would be no evil air horns.

It would let you safely take your cat out of the room without letting your cat get near the door. You could even try letting her drag around a short leash outside your room. Then if you she goes near the door you can stop her by stepping on (or rolling onto) her leash. Then pick her up & take her back to the living room. 🤷🏻‍♀️ It might be a way to give her more freedom while keeping her safe.

That or I would put motion activated air canisters (like ssscat) in front of your door. That way 24/7 the doorway is monitored with a negative reinforcement for going near the door. Plus as a bonus, it isn’t you that is doing the negative thing. Just follow the directions for how far apart you need to specs them out.

I did put on the harness with leash. But like I said not everyone is helping so he still got out. But with the leash it was a little easier catching him outside. Spray bottle isnt working much anymore. He likes air. I am on a respiratory machine. He likes when i put the tube in front of him, he likes to play with the air  So i dont think the ssscat will work.
Good news is that I am next on the waitlist for the apartments I applied 2 years ago. And hopefully doctor will approve kitty to be my emotional support. things will get better when i have my own place!

Size does affect the loudness. A container the size of an overstuffed Coke can has more gas inside than a small, palm-sized can.

I don't intend this to be a lesson on physics but consider that the volume of a container and the amount of gas you stuff into that container affect the pressure of the gas when it's inside that container. It's the pressure and volume of the gas coming out of a small opening that makes the horn work.

More gas + greater pressure = louder horn.

I've been thinking about this some more. I think, maybe, you could look into the police whistle as an option.
You buy it once for under $20.00 and you never have to worry about refills or what to do when the gas in your air horn runs out.

Years ago, I was a lifeguard at the beach. We used Acme Thunder brand whistles to warn swimmers.
You can use the whistle to give a short "toot" or you can blow harder and really give it a blast.
That way, you get to pick how loud a warning you want to give to your cat.

How's your lung function? Can you blow hard enough?

Who knows? If you have any issues with that, maybe you could consult a doctor and ask whether blowing on a whistle could be good therapy.

(I'm only half-way joking on that! ;) )

Yeah I like catching my cat by stepping on his leash over chasing him down. Still the whole point is to keep kitty from going within 5-10 feet of the door. Jackie is scaredy cat so if he gets scared it is better for me to let the leash go & let him run back home over holding onto the leash & him trying to escape.

I would get your Dr. to say your cat is an emotional support cat now. For the list it may be months to a year since someone needs to move out for you to move in. Without subsidized housing there is no way in heck I could afford an apartment on SSI !!! Heck I would struggle to rent a room! So I follow all their rules.

Not sure a harness with leash is the best idea in your specific situation -- uncooperative housemates. If the cat gets out with a harness on, the leash will get caught on something, and you might not even know the cat is out for a bit, or where it got stuck, depending on what your doing and how your housemates react. Breakaway collars being what they are, maybe its not such a big risk. Nowadays the problem is more keeping the thing on then getting stuck. Regardless, I don't see how its going to help enough to be worth any risk.

My first thought with the harness/leash was her holding onto the leash all the time. Other than that, keeping the cat in her room. It would just be a safe way to let the cat out of the room. 🤷🏻‍♀️

thats considered a party favor. so you think thats ok? im worried it may not be loud enough is its a party favor. will look into the whistle. im sure i can do it.
Robot or human?

the apartments have their own way to approve emotional support pets so once they call me they will send for approval to the doctor. it comes from their end.

someone came in and right away stepped on the leashed. other person came in i grabbed him from the leash, he tried to get away but couldnt. so at least its working some!

All cats hate the smell of citrus so if you get a spray bottle and put lemon juice in it and spray your door entrance like on the door,
door frame and some on the floor and carpet in front of the door I"m sure your cat will turn away from it. I always look up videos on
this on you tube. So go on you tube and search cats and citrus smell or how to keep your cat from running out of home. Citrus is
one odor cats do not like. You can get products for cats that have odors that they don't like. Good luck.

not too worried about him getting stuck. he walked around the house with it on and 2x he got it wrapped around something and he got himself out of it. collars, hes able to take it off asap.

I'm pretty sure it'll be loud enough. It's similar to the one we bought and it was loud enough to send a Chihuahua running under the bed.

It's not necessarily the noise level that does it. It's the fact that something unpleasant has happened when the cat did something bad.
The idea is to pair the unpleasant thing with the bad act so that the cat associates the two. If he doesn't like one thing, he'll learn not to do the other.

You don't have to make his ears bleed. ;)
You only need to teach him that he's being a "bad kitty."

Well tossing a penny can 3-5 feet from him would accomplish that. It is how I used to break it up when my kitten bully was attacking his brother. It scared the crap out of them. However really spraying the ground in front of them (by the door) would accomplish that. Then spraying the cats feet or body (not the face) if they persist. Maybe even tape off a boundary line where if the cat crosses the line getting within 5 feet of the door he gets squirted near him. (I give my cat warning shots on the ground and tell him no or my back up away from the door sound (pssst psssst) before I shoot him.)

The thing is you would still need to only let your cat out of your room when you are home to watch the cat closely (& take him into the bathroom with you..... so he won’t escape while you are busy.)

My kitten always tried to run out to our balcony which thankfully isn't a yard so he can't technically escape. However, for his safety I do not want him there by himself.
I started putting him in a harness to go outside on the balcony, and also took him outside in thevyard at my parents'. It helped with him not running out the door because I assume he made the connection that he needs his harness first. It

Question..
anyone think if i got 2 nd cat, he will want to stay inside more?
i knew eventually i wanted a 2nd cat but was taking my time. maybe its time? he wants a kitty friend really bad. he tried to play with my adult foster cat who would hiss and swat at him, but he didnt care. today he darted out ( he went 2 full days without going out!), he found a stray on the other side of the fence (he was still in the yard, stray on the other side), he did not want to leave him/her. ive been looking for a couple weeks now, a cuddly/good with other cats of course but also one with no outside experience. i came close to adopting one, he sounded perfect but i was a tad too late.
opinions, would this help???

also, the super loud horn i got, i put my hand over it and it helps with not damaging my ears lol

I don’t think a 2nd cat will help at all. It would mean more territory issues & he would still want outside. Think if it like how humans love cable or Internet. It is crazy hard to get a cat who goes outside regularly to be an indoor cat!

My vote? Wait until you move; then get a second cat. Besides why put a 2nd cat in danger from your negligent family..... that keeps letting him out.

Nick (my mom’s cat) lost half his tail to a dog. He has been sick all week & gone to the vet three times this week because he ate or got into something outside. I am beyond relieved that it looks like he will live but he is still on a appetite stimulant, anti-nausea medications plus he has received saline via Iv 3 times in the last 5 days! (He is now eating but not drinking enough.) So whatever he got into it is going to be a long road to recovery. I think his tail cost around $1,000. He is only 3 years old! 😢 My point is an outside cat lives a shorter life than an indoor cat. & that isn’t including coyote dangers! There is a reason my guy only goes out in a harness!

Nick is loved very much (& I have been calling her every day for updates on him.) But Nick would still have his tail & wouldn’t be seriously sick right now if she kept him contained in the yard (fence toppers) or only let him out in a harness with supervision.
