tarasgirl06 tarasgirl06 I suffer without as much corn as I crave. I actually put some creamed corn in my cornbread. It isn’t sweet except for the sugar in the corn. That’s enough and it makes it a less dry bread. Yum!!
I know that cats get blamed for bird decline but it is only the rare time when a cat gets a bird. Birds are so aware of the cats that they even watch them and alert each other to the prescience of a cat. I have often used the bird alerts to track cats I was searching for outside. The birds lead me straight to them! Blue Jays set off alarms to any threat, cat, hawk, snake and human! Birds are awesome! The ferals here hunted rodents. They make amazing guardians for us humans. It is humans that need to take better care of things. Time to guard our earth! Protect the woods, air and water ways. Past time but never too late. Nature is great about healing and correcting. She is very patient with us. ;)
Whenallhellbreakslose Whenallhellbreakslose Thank you for the prayers. My brother had to go back in hospital and will be allowed some healing time before more surgery. I think he will be allowed to heal awhile at home. It would be great if he could get a break.
BJ has doubled his appetite and this is wonderful to see. He is really enjoying his food again. Yay! I was so relieved to find the food we needed! It was a lot of stuff to load up but now I can rest easy for a bit.
I am being sent a compounded medicine for my foot. I am told it usually works well. Moving forward, step by step. Staying Pawsitive!
Just catching up now, Jcatbird Jcatbird . You know my *PRAYERS* and loving best thoughts and wishes are always for, and with, you all.
And yes, cats actually HELP bird and other species by most often only catching the old, sick, and weak, strengthening the gene pools of their prey species; but birds are far down on most cats' list if their natural prey, mice, rats and other small rodents, is available. The cats who prey mostly on birds are most often cats for whom other prey is unavailable. It takes a tremendous amount of energy to catch birds. Predators do not expend energy unless they must.

SarahGonzalez SarahGonzalez Poor kitties. I know many cat foods now contain corn and in nature, a cat would be very unlikely to eat corn. Just not their natural diet. My cats are susceptible to foods like that too. How many kitties do you have? I don’t know how much of this thread you have read but there are lots of kitties here. Lol We do love our kitties!

pearl99 pearl99 pearl99 pearl99 You know it is best to support the ferals and keep the cats we are guardian to, inside. I can tell you though that ferals don’t catch as many birds as you might think. Lots of studies have been done. Although some healthy birds are caught, mostly ferals eat other things and the birds they do catch are often weak or have health issues and it is sort of nature’s way to leave the strong and healthy to get the resources available to them. Humans are the great threat to birds.
I've read numbers and thought "how do they come to that?" I agree humans are the greatest threat. To birds, any animal, nature, oceans, space, sanity, each other...

Jcatbird Jcatbird Jcatbird Jcatbird Oh, BJ! Get well soon! Glad to hear of the improvement.
IDK what I'd do if I couldn't have corn. It's sacred to us and it's our main source of carbs, which we need for strength. My dad used to say that his dad would scowl and complain if he thought there was sugar in the cornbread. I know it's common to put it in the recipe, but he wouldn't eat it if it was sweet!
Thanks so much for the education on ferals/outdoor/free-roaming cats and the TRUE cause of bird crises. Global studies conducted over many years prove that HUMANS, not cats, are the #1 cause of bird numbers plummeting, but the cat-hating, ignorant segment of the public continue to spew poison about cats rather than addressing the true causes of these problems. And cats are the #1 most loved companions worldwide. They are legally protected in many nations including the US, but too often, the laws are not enforced, as they should be. Who killed 2.9 billion birds since 1970? Not cats, says a look through the glass! - Animals 24-7 is just one of many articles pointing out truth vs. lies. EVERY cat should be respected and protected. They are ADAPTIVE species, never "invasive" species. Humans would be at the top of the "invasive" list!
Miscellaneous thoughts:
I always thought dogs were the most loved, but I've recently read it's cats! I know why. We all do here!
I have a corn casserole/souffle recipe. Corn, creamed corn, cornbread, etc. are in it. It's one of my favorites. I've grown a few rows of corn in the past in a community garden, and ohhhhhh go pick the corn and drive home real quick and prepare it...heaven. I love it.
Yeah Europeans brought cats over here way back when.
With all the climate change, Native Americans and others like them knew how to live and not destroy the earth.
Not us, hopefully not too late smart.

The birds lead me straight to them! Blue Jays set off alarms to any threat, cat, hawk, snake and human! Birds are awesome! The ferals here hunted rodents. They make amazing guardians for us humans. It is humans that need to take better care of things.
I get a kick out of hearing blue jays imitating red tailed hawks. They are so accurate! They have fooled me. I think that makes sense cats more often eat rodents.
I do remember fondly my cat Milkshake, when I let cats outside (I was not wise.) I had 3 dogs so had a doggy door. Milkshake would catch baby birds and bring them in the house and let them loose. More than once I'd wake up to a baby bird hopping around my house! Mostly finches.

tarasgirl06 tarasgirl06 tarasgirl06 tarasgirl06 “Sight” is there for a reason. Not always things you desire to see but a chance for preparation maybe? If preparing is possible.
I have had some premonitions of *something* coming, not good things, but not specifics. So I don't have sight, but inkings. And only a few. That might be scary to have specifics.

I hope BJ is feeling better!

Jcatbird Jcatbird BJ!!! Is so adorable and in that one picture he is doing what our beloved Sammi used to do when I picked him up. He'd wrap his tail around my waist! It felt very reassuring, but he was probably the one looking for reassurance. We miss our big Mainey man!
SarahGonzalez SarahGonzalez We'd love to know more about them and we love pix here at TCS!!!;)
pearl99 pearl99 and Jcatbird - yeah, it's disquieting and maybe it is to "cushion the shock" but it is anything but reassuring as you can't do a thing about what is seen. If you could, it would be a different story. But you can't.

Jcatbird Jcatbird and to others, thanks for the kindness and care.

On a different note, let me tell you an update on Marble. Some of you guys may know the story about the kitty which I mistook to have no owner and which the owner damaged my catio just to get Marble out while I was not around, thus risking my other indoor cats. Despite what happened I continued to feed Marble and the others (sometimes still sneaking Marble inside our apartment so I can make sure he eats enough). Then the other day I accidentally met with the owner while I was feeding the cats outside. He was looking for Marble whom at that time was eating in my kitchen. So I told him honestly that Marble is inside, but I will let him out after dinner, expecting for some hostility between us. Then to my surprise he said, "THANK YOU. I APPRECIATE WHAT YOU ARE DOING TO MY CATS AND TO THE OTHER CATS AS WELL."

So I mellowed up and said, "Please do not do anything to my catio especially when I am not in the home, because if any of my cats escape and not be able to come back I will be devastated." He said sorry. Then I also reminded him that Marble is not safe outside and could be ran over by a car or something, being still a kitten.

Anyhow, we parted in a friendlier manner. So all's well that ends well, so to speak. :)

SarahGonzalez SarahGonzalez : welcome to TCS. :wave2: This thread, as you've seen, is quite active. However, not everyone posts here, so if you'd like to introduce yourself and your 2 kitties to the entire site, here's the link to the New Cats on the Block forum.

Jcatbird Jcatbird : sending out more healing vibes to you, your brother, BJ, and anyone else who needs them.

pearl99 pearl99 I don’t know how they come to numbers but just observing hundreds in a colony, I saw the lack of bird prey. It was very rare. Of Milkshake caught baby birds then kitty also educated bird mom to build her nest in a better place. Birds learn too.
One reason cats are now number one, besides just being awesome, is that more people live in apartments and small places that will not accommodate a dog. Also, Cat care is easier, cheaper and who can deny that more people have become educated to the wonderful personalities of cats! About time! Cats rule. You don’t have to walk a cat and pick up their poo either. Lololol
Corn soufflé! Ummm! There is nothing better than corn picked and eaten immediately! We used to keep a pot boiling near the garden to Blanche the corn and eat it! Best ever!
Yes, natives respected the earth. We should have learned from them!

SarahGonzalez SarahGonzalez Wow. A ten year old and 3 month old! Bravo!! I am guessing you adopted the three month old or found the baby. That’s great that you have two kitties. What colors? I love them all.

tarasgirl06 tarasgirl06 BJ does that tail wrapping thing. I tell him he has a little monkey tail. Lol It seems to have a life of its own. Sammie did that too? It is the sweetest feeling. It’s like being hugged.
We can’t stop progress but if I had loads of money, I would buy land here and there and make it into preserves. The army base here does an amazing job of documenting the birds and other creatures there and marking their important places as off limits. The friend I lost last year was in charge of doing banding of birds and keeping track of creatures and plants there. She knew where everything was on many, many acres. She is a great loss to us all but she did attempt to teach others there. Hopefully, it took!

dustydiamond1 dustydiamond1 Agreed! That is an adorable Marble face!

I am preparing for a marathon event! Next week the vet is helping me out because of my foot and eye problems as well as not wanting to leave the cats unattended. I have been trying to figure out the logistics of it all. 25 cats are getting their exams and immunizations in one day! Vibes are welcome! Other than illness, this will mean we don’t have to go to the vet ,two by two ,all year long. Lol Yay, I think.🤔
 Wish us luck please!

:jawdrop::noway:OMG!!! That is one big undertaking right there. You need to enlist a bunch of helpers! Could your vet do a big house call if it is a basic checkup with vaccinations. Wow!! 25 Kitties at the vet in one day--my head is spinning. :dizzy: You are a candidate for Sainthood. God bless you!

Your vet is AMAZING. Well, of course. Because YOU are, too, and your vet knows it. :hugs: *Some pretty snazzy blue pants there. And Crocs!*
I used to make this corn, rice and cheese casserole. It makes me very hungry just remembering it.
I'm Native (Indigenous). So you can learn from me. :flail:
Yes, Sammi was so sweet with his tail-around-the-waist hugs! And I can tell that BJ is that kind of cat, too.
How is that foot?
Cats are all of those and cleaner, quieter, sweeter, softer, silkier, more velvety, far better looking, and just better beings all around. Cats RULE. I'll stop there.

tarasgirl06 tarasgirl06 Our vet is the best! Such a kind and loving human. She knows me well and cared. I can’t even say how much I appreciate the people there. I would never have made it this far without help and they have been part of that.
BTW…. We all learn from you! Especially me.
The foot? Hmmm. The same. I am being sent a compounded medicine of antibiotics to use to soak it. Oral antibiotics didn’t do the trick. I am really hoping this is the answer. I do hope UPS brings it! I’d like to wear shoes more. Lol Every time I fo, my foot objects.
I agree that NJ is like Sammie. Sweet and loving.
Cats definitely rule. The ones here take good care of me.

pearl99 pearl99 I don’t know how they come to numbers but just observing hundreds in a colony, I saw the lack of bird prey.

That is an adorable Marble face!

rubysmama rubysmama Thank you snd I’ll take some of those vibes! ;):)

And now, the rest of the BJ and the vet story. Lol
Thank you for the pictorial of BJ's vet visit. Loved them all, but especially the ones of him looking out the window. :catrub:

That is a marathon event !!!! :eek3: What a wonderful vet you have to have worked out their schedule to make this happen. I'd say "don't forget to tell us how it goes", but I'm sure this event will be the smile post of the night for many nights to come. :)

Actually it had fledged, but still a baby to me. I wondered if she wanted a playmate  since she didn't eat it.
Then one day she brought in a baby bunny. :bunny:
