Looking for the best, most affordable way to buy dry and wet cat food for 3 cats.

I see the ads for Chewy all the time. Is Chewy really worth ordering your food through, do you really get a deal/savings or is it better to just go and buy your food at the store?

Depends on sales, how far you have to drive and brand preferences. I live in an area with many stores so I can do some price shopping and sale shopping. If I want to spend the time and effort, I can usually save $20 a month on the food cost. However, I have to drive to different stores and take the time to pick it up. Whereas Chewy delivers it and I usually qualify for free shipping. If I am saving $20 but it will cost me $10 in gas money plus two hours to drive to the different stores to save the $20 it isn't worth it. Although sometimes the food at the store has much better sales and I can save $40. Or I need stuff from the other stores around the pet store so I am not just going for pet food.

I don't know if Chewy is any cheaper as I don't use them. My reason for not using them is because to buy from Chewy's you have to buy in 'bulk' (like other similar online pet shops as well). I have a cat who I cannot guarantee won't tire of a specific food long before I would get through the minimum number of cans you have to buy from Chewy's. So, I order online from local pet stores' web sites who allow me to order just the number of cans I want, and then go pick them up when they notify me the order is ready (same day).

It might be more costly than Chewy's in the long run, but at least I can get exactly what I want, without over-buying.

Well, I will tell you what I did, because I just ordered food for my remaining two cats. I bought wet food from Chewy, plus some treats, to get me to the $50 threshold for free shipping. Of course, because I do a variety of different flavors for my cats, Chewy didn't have all of them I needed. So I placed an online order with PetSmart that I will pick up on my way home. Will also stop at Pet Supplies Plus for another online order on my way home. That being said, I won't have to buy food for another two months.

The more you can buy at Chewy the better. If you can't order enough to get the free shipping I most likely wouldn't use them as often. What I do really also like is that I ordered from them this morning, and my order will be here tomorrow morning. They ship Via FedEx.

I hardly ever use Chewy. I order food through my Amazon subscribe and save. I get wet food and the dry Dr Elsey's chicken that way. I also order food through Walmart.com for canned food delivery and Petsmart for pickup if they have a deal going on. I always get the 32 can pack of Friskies poultry pates. It can be hard to find. Especially in store.

Thank you for responding. Sounds like you have your bases covered :) I know most cats like Friskies canned food, but they are mostly filler and by products.

I’ve been using Chewy for the few years and I love them….granted for wet food you can’t just buy several individual cans, they only offer packs of 12-24 or 32 but has anyone gone to stores lately and see the shelves almost empty for wet cat food? I’ve been to Walmart, Pet Supplies Plus and 3 different grocery stores to find the same situation...almost empty shelves for the brands I buy (Friskies and fancy feast). I am amazed how fast my orders are delivered…I have a lot of cats so it’s very easy for me to reach the $49 free delivery point. And when I’ve bought something other than food and if there was any problem with it there were no questions asked, the item was replaced or they credited my account.
Also if there was something “out of stock” you can ask them to notify you when it’s back in stock.
I highly recommend them

I occasionally check out the cat food deals forum. If you know what food your cat likes, why not buy in bulk and get 5% off with auto ship and free shipping. Returns are easy. Take it to a shelter and they'll refund you. Most of the food I buy is only online

I use Chewy and I like them. They always have what I need, even those Dentalife treats the stores don't carry. I order a month's supply at a time and always qualify for free shipping. I don't understand the problem with so-called bulk because what I get is the same size as the grocery store - 24 packs of Sheba and 24 cans of Fancy Feast. It's a dollar or two cheaper than the grocery store, but nothing to write home about.

Try it out once, ordering for a month and see how you like it.

I love the sign on their boxes: Oh boy Oh boy a box! Plus the shipping paper I stash in corners for my cats to also play in.

I have to buy online because I don't have pet shops unless I drive 45 mins. Chewy is cheaper than the grocery store usually, and my cat loves their house brands (Tiny Tiger and American Journey). Though, I do buy a lot from Petco online as with sales they can sometimes be cheaper (but don't stock a lot of the cheap brands anymore).

I shop at Chewy sometimes and in person others, depending on sales and what I feel like doing.

I do like Chewy as I had a dog who was on prescription food we purchased via autoship and when she passed we called them and let them know we needed to cancel. They sent us a very nice bouquet of flowers and a card.

They also have a tendency, if you need to return something, to just refund you and tell you to donate the item to a shelter.

We have an auto ship delivery scheduled every month from Chewy and get a 5% discount and free shipping. It contains all the litter, wet and dry food we need for the month, so savings add up. We buy Tiki Cat, which can be in short supply in stores for the specific products they like. Chewy has always come through for us. One time I needed to return some cat food that my cats didn’t like, and they gave me an instant refund plus let me keep the food (I donated it.) Another time some items in mu auto delivery were out of stock, so they sent an apology email with a coupon code to use on future orders. Very good company to deal with.

I know a few years ago PetSmart bought Chewy and would price match. PetSmart would even give you the Chewy bulk item price for individual cans or bags.

I don't know if this is still true as I've moved and shop somewhere more convenient now, but it was a good deal when I used it - online prices at a retail store.

Aaaaannnnd . . . Amazon Subscribe & Save was JUST out of Dr. Elsey's Chicken (6#) the other day. Hopefully it corrects itself, but I have been working in a bit of the Dr. E's rabbit just in case we can't get it in a hurry. If you can't find the food you need locally, I would strongly suggest your cats get willing to eat *something else* for a day or two until you can source the item that Amazon may be out of. Ask me how I found this out. ;)

I live in a small town so the brands my cats like and I want to feed aren't even available locally. Chewy is nice because everything shows up in a couple days and I can stock up. But you do have to know what your pets like, no buying one can of this or that to try.

I should have said that I play both sides & order both from Chewy & Amazon. It's EASY to hit $49 with Dr. Elsy's food! Or if your food is less spendy, then just add a bag of litter & you are there! There is a (chain, specific to California) pet store that I can walk to from my apartment that sells singles of the Weruva wet we feed so I can try it before ordering a case -- but it is very expensive and staffed with snooty hipsters, so I try to go infrequently.
