You do not necessarily need a toothbrush and toothpaste either. Dr Elsey’s makes a litter attractant, which will prevent you from having to mix brands of litter. You may not be in the US if those are the prices you’re seeing on those foods, and if so I apologize - my cat and I go through one variety pack of the tiki cat wet food every month, supplementing with dry food, and I think my average cat food budget is probably about $25 a month plus $30ish every two or three for a big bag of dry food. I realize that it’s more expensive elsewhere, though!

I realize this may sound a bit gruff and I apologize in advance but right now you are asking a community of cat owners for advice on what you need and what you don’t, based on a list you’ve made, but you don’t appear willing to make changes to that list, which is a bit confusing and frustrating. Everyone is telling you that you need a cat tree and you’re saying you don’t - you do! Cats love to climb, this is one of the only universal cat behaviors. Everyone is telling you that you don’t need a stroller, you’re saying you do because you believe you will be able to get a cat home from the shelter and to and from the vet in a stroller on public transportation - I cannot stress enough how much you will not be able to do that. A soft carrier won’t be any heavier or lighter than a hard carrier or any harder or easier for a cat to escape from. Even when I had a ruptured L5/S1 disc I was able to pick up Sassy’s crate, which weighs less than five pounds (unloaded of course!). As far as escape goes, they have latches and zippers and if cats ever figure out how to use those we are in a whole lot of trouble ;)

I understand and appreciate that you are trying to research and learn more before adopting, but please do keep an open mind as you are getting input from people who have forgotten more about cats than many of us will ever know. It may also be worth going to or calling a local pet store or cat specialty vet if you have either of these near you and asking them the same questions, in my experience people are always very happy to help, and of course we are as well!

TCS has several Articles that should cover all the bases for necessary supplies and what you need when bringing a new cat home:
New Cat Checklist: What You Need To Get Before Bringing Kitty Home – TheCatSite Articles
How To Help A New Cat Adjust To Your Home – TheCatSite Articles
First-time Cat Owner’s Guide – TheCatSite Articles

Good luck, thank you for adopting and giving a cat a forever home. :goodluck:
Okay, so I finally finished going through the three links above. Looks like I'm missing the scratching post, toys (other than the laser light), toothbrush/paste, treats, catnip/silvervine, brush, stroller and cat tree. Other than the Dogger Stroller and Feandrea cat tree, all the rest are cheap and easy to budget for. The stroller is on the November budget, and I should have all or most of the cheap stuff by end of month. The cat tree will be put on the back burner til the cat shows me some interest in climbing (and actual ability to climb). The Dogger Stroller has a two week waiting list, so I'm expecting at least mid-November before I can start looking in the pounds.

Not showing this to my gang lest they feel deprived!

But then they live in and out of the wild outdoors so need far less . I do use the turf ash for litter; mostly they prefer outdoors anyway as for scratching etc.
When I was breeding Siamese I would tell new owners. "YOU are their best toy."

We are such a wondrously varied group here! Love it.:

To be able to have the option of going outdoors at will (I'm assuming in the relatively safe rural setting) is more than worth all the fancy gadgets around. Your cats have nothing to be jealous about. Country life is cat paradise. The grass always looks greener on the other side of the fence...until you cross over to the other side!

Ah yes. But now someone has stolen 2 of my cats. We know who but getting them back. I am indeed blessed to be where I am. Watched one racing across a field at top speed... Wonderful... NB small offshore island sparsely inhabited

You stated you needed a soft sided carrier. I have two of these and I absolutely love them. Both sides and both ends unzip to give your cat more room to freely turn around, and they don't feel so confined. Then when you are actually carrying it, zip the sides and ends back up and it's the size of a large duffel bag. My vet loved it so much she actually bought one for her cat.

No, I said I have a soft carrier (as per the original post), and further on that neither the buses nor BART allows them....both demand the hard carrier. I have since gotten a email reply from BART that they will deign allow the Dogger Stroller, with or without the soft carrier, on BART trains. The AC Transit management is still giving me the silent treatment as to whether they will allow the stroller on their buses, but since they allow baby strollers, and my 'VersaCart' shopping cart, I'm betting yes.

A wand toy with various attachments. I got the pet fit for life one from chewy. Neko-chan doesn't like feathers, so the additional attachments let me know which ones she liked. Also, a cat nip toy. Neko-chan goes crazy for the yeoww! Ones, especially the banana and rainbow.
While researching toys, I found this one on Youtube:
...and tracked it down to this source:

If the cat appears food motivated, I may give it a shot to keep the cat busy on those days I have to do banking or get groceries.

I need a soft carrier. The hard carrier is too much for my back, knees, and ankles to handle even without a cat in it. Given the fact a soft carrier is supposedly easy for cats to escape, and the public transit buses here give it a thumbs down, a stroller is not optional. Even if the cat does not like walkies, I still need a way to get the cat home from the pound, and to the vet.
Well you said you had one, then said you needed one several posts later. Sorry for trying to help.

I find it strange that:

"I need a soft carrier. The hard carrier is too much for my back, knees, and ankles to handle even without a cat in it"

is not obvious I am explaining why I bought a soft carrier, why I will not be buying a hard carrier, and how that all ties into why I need a cat stroller. Too abstruse? Not wordy enough?
