Tsuki, my 9 month old Persian kitten was using his litterboxes without any fuss ever since he arrived at our home. But some days ago I noticed him urinating in a packing box that I left in our living room for him play, starting that day I started noticing other spots and he keeps doing that even after I clean it. This kid is still using his litterboxes and doesn't show any signs of pain or strain. I talked to his vet and he said since his urine and poop are normal it must not be an health issue. I changed his litter type from clay to tofu last month but he didn't seem to dislike it when I tried it before completely changing to the new one. Other than that I haven't made any major changes around our house so its really confusing and I hate the way my home smells now. Also he started this habit of playing with his water bowl, he just dips his paw into the water and licks it. he also splashes it everywhere. He is not neutered yet btw, what do I do?

Hello and welcome to TCS. My first thought on reading your post, is that despite him seeming to not mind the change to the new litter, I would go back to the old litter and see if that makes a difference.

It could also be a territorial marking thing, since he's now 9 months old, and not neutered yet.

And lastly, it could be an UTI. For that reason, I would suggest taking him to the vet for a checkup, to ensure it's not an UTI, as they won't clear up on their own, and can be dangerous for male cats.

Meanwhile, ensure you're cleaning the areas where he's peed with an enzyme cleaner so that his urine scent is completely removed.

At 9 months he is maturing. He is doing this as he is marking his territory. My Persian did the same at this age it’s bc he is not neutered. Get him neutered and hopefully it will stop bc he is already used to this habit of marking it may be a little difficult for him to stop , ideally he should have been neutered at 6 months

If your boy was using the box fine but it's changed with aging, neutering will definitely help. He's marking his territory. My male cats were neutered at 5m and have never sprayed elsewhere.

If it doesn’t stop with neutering, let us know! There are lots of other things you can try after his surgery if the behavior continues.

Some cats like to play with their water. You could get one of those plastic placemats with a little lip that people get for their dog water bowls so it doesn’t create a mess.
