Hi 😺

I will hopefully be getting a little boy or girl towards the end of November/early December at 14 weeks old

I have been researching diets to find some that will be the most nutritious and available in the UK. I will of course be speaking to the breeder about this as well but

What do you all feed your kittycats?
Are yours picky?
Have you noticed any changes (good or bad) while changing diets?
Are there brands that you would recommend?
Do you supplement your cat's diet in any way?

When is actually the best time to move a kitty from kitten to adult cat food?

I came across a thread on FB that mentioned Royal Canin actually not being that great and I was quite surprised. I have never fed it myself, even my dogs won't touch it, however I've always seen it advertised/available to buy at every Vet's i have been to therefore just assumed it must be good? This is just a random question as i found it surprising 😁

Thank you

I’d feed a variety of high protein and low carbs, moisture- rich options only; I’d never feed my cats dry food again - they hydrate by eating and drinking from a separate dish isn’t natural for them.

My favorite European brands, available from zooplus.co.Uk are GranataPet, Grau, CatzFinefood, Animonda Carny.
Royal Canin has just terrible ingredients and high carbs amount, no way I’d feed it to any animals.

V verna davies can point you to UK stores and web sites for food, such as Zooplus.

My kitten doesn't like "posh" expensive wet cat food!

It's ok to feed something other than what the breeder recommends. Be sure to read the papers before you sign them and hand over final payment. Sometimes there's a clause or some such that says you must do X or the breeder will take back the pet.

Kittens are typically moved to adult food around a year old or so.

Welcome to TCS. You came to the right place for starting this topic.

Adopting a new kitten is very exciting! I bet you can't wait to choose your new feline son or daughter. Which breed will it be?

People who say Royal Canin is not good are right. I always avoided that brand and always will. Vets sell its prescription formulas, not the regular stuff, and do it for financial reasons without knowing anything about the company's cost-cutting lack of quality ingredients.

The only problem I had with changing diets was one cat having diarrhea after eating a small amount of Wellness Core beef. I assumed it was an allergic reaction to beef because the cat never did that with any other flavor. However, you are supposed to transition slowly,

Hi vr1994, welcome to the site, glad you have joined us.

Do you have a Pets at Home near you, if so pop in and have a chat with one of the staff, they are very knowledgeable and have a good variety of brands plus if your kitten doesn't like the food you can return it and get a refund. As mentioned above, Zooplus is a good site so is their sister company Bitiba and slightly cheaper but have to spend a little more to get free delivery. Petshop is another on site supplier that I have recently found and am pleased with.

Thanks so much for the suggestions! I will check those out

I know cats don't really like still water but mine have drank well from a cat fountain in the past 😊

also Lily's Kitchen is a good quality food which can be bought almost anywhere. You have some time to look for a kitten food that has the meat first on the list of ingredients and 10% + protein. Choose something with fewer ingredients, even grain free. Also ask the person you are having the kitten from what they are feeding them because a sudden change might cause diarrhoea.

I can recommend Canagan in the UK! They do pouches and tins for all lifestages; our cat prefers the tins. It's literally shredded meat and broth, nothing else except the usual things to make it a complete food. It's pricy, but really good for a treat and/or sensitive tummies.

Summer of 2020, still had 15 mouths to feed. Sadly within 8-months time after making a major move from NV to WY we lost 5 of our older furbabies I'm certain due to stress of move and old age. We've always taken in older and less adoptable cats since they have a less chance of becoming adopted. The cost associated with vaccinations, spay and neuter, plus potential vet bills in addition to healthy food can be a real challenge to budget but you find a way. Having adopted many cats which old neighbors back in NV merely kicked to the curb once they'd outgrown being a kitten is what made up our minds we needed a rural area where neighbors more readily accept and appreciate animals. Since we always have a number of cats at any given time, we must be as conservative as possible in the event budget calls for any possible vet bills. Therefore, despite fact cats can be not only finicking regarding what foods they eat but also their digestive system may be hyper-sensitive and negatively react to new foods introduced. We have been very fortunate on that note and are able to serve a variety of wet foods, dry foods, as well as we always have on hand at least a couple of roasted chickens from either Walmart or Smith's. I keep the breast meat shredded into small bites and daily serve a large "tray" and watch so each cat eats some pure protein. Then we supplement with the canned pate and a bit of dry food. Wish I could place 2 of my fat cats on diets but feeding multiple pets makes it very difficult if not impossible to feed separate diets. These guys will keep you awake all night long if you don't leave some dry food at their access over night. I think I've spoiled them. My bad.

My boy is very picky and will only eat certain things. He's always been like that though. As a kitten I had to feed a certain brand and flavor of food or he wouldn't eat. He's going on 7 years old. My girl is less so but still picky.

Thanks so much! I will check both of those, i have heard of lily's kitchen but not the other.

I will check with the breeder and either carry on with their recommendation or slowly incorporate a new diet. I know she feeds both wet and dry but not entirely sure what brand yet. We're going to get on a call later on this week so i can ask any questions. Thanks for the suggestions!

Aw bless them, how could you not spoil them though! I can imagine it must be difficult with so many cats to take care of but it sounds like your doing an amazing job! 💕
I was thinking about incorporating some meat like chicken too but wasn't sure about feeding it cooked or raw. I have heard both good and bad things about raw diets so i think i'd rather play it safe.
