Two years ago, some of us who post in the general reading thread thought it could be fun to read the same book at the same time, then discuss it. So in October 2019 our Book of the Month Club was launched, and except for a hiatus that first December, we’ve read a book every month since.

To mark our 2 year anniversary, we wanted to try something different, so we’re doing the exact opposite of the original inspiration for the book club.

For this month only, instead of us all reading the same book, everyone can choose to read any book he or she likes. It can be fiction or non-fiction, one you’ve never read before, or an old favourite that you’d like to read again. Basically the sky, or rather the book store, library, or your personal book shelf, is the limit.

The reading period will be October 1st to October 21st, with discussion commencing on October 22nd. Since participants will be reading different books, this month’s discussion will also be different, so we’ll be providing questions to help members critique the book they chose.

Everyone is invited to be part of this month’s unique book club experience, and although we’d love for all our fellow readers to join us every month, the book club is designed so members can opt in, or out, whenever they wish. So participating in October won’t commit you to future months. You will, however, always be welcome to join us again at any time.

Think that covers everything, however, if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask.

Meanwhile start thinking about what book you’re going to read in October.

And if you're ready to join us sooner than October, here's our
September book club thread.

Since it's still a month away, wasn't sure if it was too early to ask "who's planning to join us in October?"

But if you're a "definitely" and you're itching to post and let us know, go for it. :)

And if you have a book in mind that you're going to read, you can post that too. But, lots of time to make that decision.

I haven't done any book clubs, but I really need to read more.

I mean, I'm reading, but "Kitten and Friends", "Baby Touch and Feel Bunny", or "Yummy Yucky" don't leave much to discuss. So maybe I should try to find a book (and finish "Bringing Up Bébé" before then, which I've been half through for a while so I can start fresh) and join in.

misty8723 misty8723 : Happy to hear you'll be joining us. And with a kindle full of books, sounds like you're all set to go, and just have to decide which book to choose. About the books we've chosen in the past, believe or not, we've actually read several non-mysteries, but it is the genre that's been picked most often, I guess. Also, totally understand you not being able to afford to buy books. I rarely ever buy books either. Does your public library loan e-books? If so, that might be something to check out. [pun not intended, LOL]

Mia6 Mia6 : I know you have some favourite books you reread from time to time. Do you plan to read one of them? Or something new? I haven't decided yet. Might just end up going with whatever e-book comes up as available at my library on Oct 1.

Lola3791 Lola3791 : Glad to hear you'll be joining us again. Looking forward to seeing what book you choose.

Lari Lari : This won't be a typical book club month, since we'll all be reading different books. But if you're wanting to get back into reading, this is probably a good month to take the plunge, since you'll have some motivation to finish the book. What genres do you like?

I do like fantasy! I think the last epic series I read was what's out of A Song of Ice and Fire and was really into that. I checked out the poll from September, and the one that didn't win, The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, sounded really interesting! I read tons of historical fiction as a kid as well. Mostly I've read pregnancy and parenting books this past year, so it might be good to get away from that. I'm going to check to see if I have anything I haven't read here, or maybe go to the library. J's finally falling asleep a little earlier to the point where sometimes I have a half hour of her in her crib before I have to feed the cats and go to bed, so if this keeps up, reading a bit in the evening may be doable.

Or I'll discuss "Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes." Either or.

Loads of time to decide, so see what you feel like reading when October arrives.

Sounds like the timing is working out for you getting back into reading. I haven't read much fantasy, but enjoy historical fiction. I also thought The Invisible Live of Addie LaRue sounded interesting, and plan to read it someday. I'm not familiar with "Pete the Cat", LOL, but excellent parenting introducing J to books with cats.

I've never been able to figure out how to check out e-books online from the library. But I haven't tried in a while. Maybe the process is a little less confusing now.

I love the Song of Ice and Fire series, but it doesn't seem like he's ever going to finish it. :(

I'm pretty bummed about it, because the show went so off the rails around season 5, I can't believe that's how it's meant to go. But yeah, I'd be surprised at this point if we ever see The Winds of Winter, much less the last one.

I have heard rumors WoW might be released this year. Not holding my breath. I didn't even watch the show. I watched the first season and part of the second. I definitely prefer the books.

You're better off. The first three seasons were a little off, but fairly faithful just switched around a bit to fit the screen better. But in season five, they put characters in completely different places than they were in the books so they could do the plots they wanted and it just got so bad.

I'm not holding my breath either. Sometimes I think GRRM wrote himself into a corner and doesn't know how to get out but won't admit it. But if it does happen, I'll be thrilled.

I'm thinking of reading "Walking into the Night" by Olaf Olafsson. It's a book which has been sitting in the bookcase for years. I can't remember whether I actually purchased it while on a short business trip to Reykjavik or maybe I found it at a flea market selling English-language books.
Thank you for giving me the chance to read at least one of my books, waiting to be read! :read:📚
