Is putting olive oil on cat food safe and beneficial?

My friend's cat doesn't want anything other than dry food usually. He said supposedly olive oil is good for them so he sprinkles it on a spoon sometimes and mixes it around the food. He said he sheds way less since doing this. I'm interested in doing this. I've seen olive oil in "human" seafood in cans such as Pole Line and was wondering if that's ok too.

No, plant based oils aren’t good for cats, as cats aren’t able to efficiently process almost anything from plant sources — not that there’s much of benefit to a cat in olive oil other than fats — the omega 3 to omega 6 ratio in olive oil is pretty horrible. If anything, krill and/or sardine oils (NOT the oil that comes with sardines) are better sources of omega. I use Nordic Naturals Omega for Cats and Small Dogs, but plenty of options available. 1mL a week is enough for regular use for an average sized cat.

So is this the one I should get in your opinion from them?

Omega-3 Cat

There's a pet cod liver oil one.

How long have you used Nordic Naturals and have you seen a difference?

That’s the kind I use, yes. My lot are on raw, and they’ve always had some form of fish or fish oil in their diet as they need the extra source of omega. That said, I recently made the switch to NN from a local lower quality one, and it suits my girl a lot better — her fur’s gotten even more shiny than usual. Chips has always had a good coat, so it’s less noticeable on him, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he had improvement, as well. It takes a couple months of use to really start seeing an effect.
