Hi, 3 kittens exactly a month old. Have been noticing wetness (must be kitten pee) in a particular corner of the bed (nest) since the last one week. Need advice/suggestions on changing facilities for kittens according to their growth/ age. The whole family is healthy.

You need to give them a litter box...this is around the age that they will start eating solids and start litter training. It seems like the kittens have already started to train themselves, but you definitely do not want them getting used to going on blankets and whatnot. Just put a kitten litter box in that corner of the nest and take their paw and gently show them how to dig, and they should get the gist of what you are saying.

Kittens start to urinate on their own around 3 weeks of age. This is when you should introduce a litterbox with non-clumping litter (just in case they consume any of it). Place them in it and see if they go. You can also place some of the mother's stool (gross, I know) into the litterbox to promote them picking the skill up faster and using the litterbox properly. Good luck!

Here are helpful videos:

Kittens with a mom wean best to solids between 5-7 weeks old. They learn the litter box best during this time also. They are on the young side at only 3 weeks, so continue to change the bedding, or put doggie pee pads down that you can throw away.

Sarthur2, your suggestion is taken. Also I put a small litter box with tofu pellet litter in one corner. But I am dreading that they might ingest some. Is my fear reasonable? Can one month old kittens chew or swallow pellet litter?

Yes, better paper than pellets until they are older. Wise move on your part! Thank you!

Okay but the question still remains on how and when exactly to transition. Given that we cannot keep an eye on them all the time, how to go about this? Even if you keep an eye, how to train them about the difference b/w food and litter? I am at my wit's end. I am all alone having to keep these babies safe only on research from the internet and commom sense. Vet help is so far away in this town and nearly impossible. I dread at the thought. This site and members like you have been priceless. This cat mama is my first ever cat and that one became 4. This is truly a trial by fire in cat fostering.

Kittens usually stop trying to eat litter between 8 and 12 weeks. Once they use the litter box regularly you can transition. Even with experience, all kittens are different. It is definitely trial and error!
