I have a whole male Norwegian - HCM tested, genetic testing done. Have visiting female from reputable breeder. This is the 2nd female the breeder has sent here. First one he had 3 heat cycles to try -- His FIRST breeding - both newbies. -- no pregnancy. Now I have a female - a little larger and same age as him - better fit we thought. First heat cycle and same thing happening. He mounts too high - above tail - can't find right spot - she gets tired and lays down. At times when I have seen them in action he seems like he should be in the right place but no cigar. He tries and tries and then eventually they both sleep exhausted until they try again. I have never heard "the scream" from her. Are there some males that just never figure it out ? It is a shame because he is a beautiful example of the breed the the female's breeder wants him in her lines. I can't show him because shows ended in March 2020 when he was a kitten and now he is too afraid of strangers. I want one of his kittens to show.

It just takes a while until they figure it out. If he is new at this it may take several times before he can actually get the job done. JUST have him keep trying, I have NEVER heard of a tom never learning how.......

THANK YOU so much for answering. It is so hard to find info without getting lectured on WHY are you breeding cats - LOL -- I want to tell them that more than several Thousand $ have been spent on cat and all the testing and travel and explain it is a worthy breeding for betterment of the breed but -- Geez I don't bother. so many people get shut down by this and get no help. The breeder of my cat told me it took one of her imports 5 tries and the breeder of the female is understanding BUT he doesn't have forever and I don't want to have to neuter him so even though I want to feel he will learn eventually, nothing will stop my worry until he is successful and getting feedback like yours helps -- it really does. Thanks again

I know it would not help the breed, but you might have him 'practice' on a queen that has several litters, maybe not even a purebred. I'm sure like you said the breeder with the female will tire of trying with no results.

Believe me -- many desperate measures have entered my head that I would try before I neuter him if she takes this female back. I thought of offering her $$ to keep her here longer since she would be forgoing a litter sooner with a proven male elsewhere. I also could get his grandmother if I pay transport -- that would be in-line breeding but she is 7 years old. Is pregnant now but seems like maybe she would be too old? His grandmother is a beautiful NFC and has produced many champions but she is on the West Coast and I am in the East coast -- alot of $$ in transport back and forth unless I retired her here. I will not neuter him unless all options fail.

I think your best bet is using an experienced queen. Anyway you could purchase a girl? Surely there is one available closer and not so closely related. Although from what my friend tells me ( a NFC breeder) the gene pool is small)

The gene pool with NFC's in the States is small. Not many breeders either and those with winning cats are importing

Hmm any in Canada? I would not breed to a 7 year old cat and she should have been spayed at 5-6 years old. You do not want females to go through so many heat cycles otherwise you risk major health issues like mammary cancer and pyometra. You only have the breeding male? No females at all? Are you just wanting a show cat? If so, to be honest it might be easier just to purchase a show quality kitten from another breeder and get him fixed. There are never guarantees you will get a show champion no matter how stunning they are.

I agree about the 7 year old. Too old. I just wanted to breed him once before I neuter him. I just want him to be happy and not so restless and I wanted one of his kittens BUT I am wondering if after I neuter him I might be able to show him which I would love to do. He only got 2 shows in kitten class and they stopped. He will be 2 yrs old in September and it was breed him or neuter him ASAP. I am just wondering if a nervous jumpy male might calm some after neutering with age. Maybe I can show him when he is 3 or 4. Get him out and about in his stroller - exposed to more people before then. There is never much time at the show hall int he morning to orient them at a ring like they say you should do.

I suspect this would be considered unethical breeding. Especially using a domestic cat. It is quite unpleasant for the queen and just creates more moogies. Too many out there already.

I think this is meant to be spayed cats, not for actual breeding. The use of an experienced retired queen would be that she knows what she's doing and could possibly help the male figure it out.

7 years isnt too old, if she had litters earlier. Also, big long haired breeds tends to mature later than say, orientals...

The problem is, if she is pregnant now, she will be 8 before she is ready for a new pregnancy with him... Becuase you want her to rest good from a pregnancy...
She still wont be too old, but IF you hesitate with a 7 year, so it will be even more problematic with an 8 year...

But if you are happy with them just doing their things, for him to get the necessary experience from a knowleable lady, and perhaps spay her afterwards, there shouldnt be no medical problems.

I decided against getting the 7 year old - who would be 8. I may have to import a female and pay for breeding rights. But that will be difficult until after this Covid thing -- If there is an "after"

You can still import to my knowledge, I imported from Cape Town to NY customs back in February.

Have you considered getting a show quality female imported? She could be the show cat and also bred to the male!
