Both of my Twin cats are constipated. My female cat has been struggling with constipation since May and is on Lactulose and Cisapride. She has gotten 2 enemas so far and the vet still doesn’t know why she is constipated. The meds are working for her but if I try to take her off she gets constipated again. My male cat got constipated just a few weeks ago and I am hoping so hard that it goes away. He got an enema last Thursday and is taking lactulose. The medicine does not seem to be doing much. I have them both eating the wet Royal Canine Gastrointestinal food. Has anyone had similar experiences with this??

Are they drinking plenty of water especially if the weather is hot. Try mixing a couple of tablespoons of water into their wet food. Also I find psyllium helps, mix a pinch into their food twice a day, its a fibre so should help them to pass the stools easier.

Are they very active? Being active can help with constipation issues. Getting them up and about, jumping while playing (chasing toys, etc) can really help, along with adding fiber as stated above. Are the eating ONLY wet food with water added? Kibble is very drying, so if some of their meals are dry food, try to stop that and feed only wet food.

They eat dry food during the day and then I give them wet food at night. It’s hard for me to only do wet food because I work long hours during the day and don’t want the wet food to get bad.

You can leave wet food out during the day. Most cats eat it up straight away though. I feed mine home cooked and only one canned they can eat. They can go quite a while in between meals when I have to be out longer. Usually i am mostly home or in and out.

Have you tried pumpkin?

I'm thinking the dry food is the culprit. Many cats only eat two meals per day, spaced out over 12 hours or so. You could try switching them to all wet food, which would be optimal if they are constipated, try adding fiber as well as water to that wet food, and if you are worried that is too far between meals, try freezing some of the wet food and putting it out for them frozen. It will thaw during the day and they can nibble on it if they chose. Or put it on a cold pak or something. But if your house is air conditioned and not too humid, it should be ok for several hours "as it".
