Just about raspberry picking time. The bushes are loaded and while most all the berries are still growing, one bush is ahead of the rest and gave me a few delicious ripe berries today. I am betting another week or two and I will be able to pick every couple days.

Please make me feel better - Is anyone else struggling to stay ahead of the weeds? I wish the rest of the gardens (Flowers and vegetables) grew as well as the weeds! Decent gardening weather has been non existent recently. First we had days with a heat index over 100 and high humidity. Now we have had days of rain. When we do get decent weather it seems that Bill has doctors appointments!

Yes the weeds are taking over. It’s been too hot and too dry to do much of anything about them. I got one big bed cleared after a bit of rain last week but everywhere else it’s sad flowers and lots of weeds.

You're not alone. I wish some of our plants grew as well as the weeds do. There is one that is especially difficult to deal with as it sends runners out everywhere, and if I root it out today it will be back tomorrow. It has cooled off some, so maybe I can make a small dent in the weed population today.

Yes I was grabbing handfuls of weeds while fixing my beans. It was “stupid hot” and now that its nice i have a family bbq. I have beans ready to harvest in almost every bed! 🤪

Yup, struggling, and losing the battle. Mulch does help, in gardens, if you pile it thick enough. And putting cardboard, or layers of newspaper under the mulch helps as well. But my lawn, I'm sure, is sending out invitations for weeds to move in, because they seem to be taking over. :sigh:

You should see our lawn. There is more clover than there is grass.

The clover stays green better than the grass in our heat sometimes. You can tell we have different grass in different areas by whats green and what turns brown in the heat.

The worst thing is the crabgrass though. It spreads everywhere in the blink of an eye. Next year I want to try putting down a preventative but that won’t help my gardens. 🤪

That's exactly what's running rampant in my lawn. And since it spreads by rhizomes, digging it out is almost impossible. I wouldn't really mind, except it's squeezing out what grass blades I have growing. Then where there isn't clover, there's chickweed. It's just sad and pathetic how impossible it is to have a nice grass lawn these days.

Are people where you guys live switching out front lawn grass for mulch or rocks, with gardens mixed in. I'm not quite ready to do that yet, but that's what a lot of people here have done.

That's the other problem, we keep have low rain summers, which have even led to water restrictions, so again, grass suffers, and weeds that like the heat move in and thrive.

No, because it hasn't gotten that bad yet. I have been overseeding with a heat-tolerant seed blend, but I think the only way to 'win' is to convert more lawn to raised growing beds using such drought-tolerant plants as coneflowers, black-eyed Susan, and others. The tomatoes get a quart of water apiece each morning, and they are mulched with compost to retain moisture. As for the lawn, it can fend for itself. I don't water it, and I don't know of very many others who do.

There is little no grass in my yard now. The clovers took over and "choked" everything to death. I spent 3 hours on Thursday pulling clovers out of my flower bed underneath the oak tree and surprisingly, the flowers are starting to perk up more and seem to be growing better. The clover runs and it settles deep into the earth. I had to turn the soil up a lot and reach in deep to get roots and all out. And I still missed some because I can see them returning. *sigh*.

Where it is in the flower beds, I have to pull the individual clover plants by hand, as there are hundreds of shallow-planted bulbs like the dwarf crocus, and to use a cultivator would be to unearth them, and I really don't want to have to replant all of them. Plus, clover is sneaky. It hides under the greenery of the good plants and takes moisture away from them. If I was running a farm, I would welcome clover for it's nitrogen-fixing properties, which enriches the soil. As a gardener? Not so much.

Clover is just awful. :( Hard to believe there was a time we liked seeing it, and would search for 4-leaf clovers. 🍀 Wonder if there's a more invasive type that taking over now? :hmmm:

The clover that we grew on the farm was the red clover. What is taking over my lawn is the white clover.

White clover is actually good for your lawn. Clover has small nodules on their roots that contain bacteria that fix gaseous nitrogen. Which means the clover is helping fertilize your lawn. In fact, prior to WWII seed mixes for lawns included white clover seed.

So if Scotts has convinced you, keep buying and applying herbicides and fertilizer to your lawn for a monoculture of turf grass. Or, welcome the clover and call it a greensward.

Yes, I believe that I mentioned that fact.

My apologies, N NY cat man You mentioned clover O.K. if you were a farmer, didn't want clover in the flower beds. I jumped to the conclusion about clover in the lawn.

I'm not upset; at my age I can't afford that-it's bad for the blood pressure.

We have clover in our lawn, which I didn't mind until yesterday. Because of all the rain I haven't been able to mow so the clover is blooming. I had the dogs out yesterday and Riley was stung by a bee, right beside his eye.
