I was reading a little about this brand causing diarrhea and I think it's messing my 9 week old up..
I fostered him since he was 10 days old and just officially adopted him Saturday. He came home from his neuter Friday with mild pneumonia and he is on clavamox. I'm aware clavamox can really mess up the GI tract but he was having diarrhea before this. I thought maybe he's still getting used to food because he was weaned a few weeks before that off formula but I think it's safe to say he is another wellness victim? I believe he was eating dry food and friskies at the vet while he recovered for 24 hours. He came home not wanting food at all that evening or the next day. And it's rare for him because he was the best eater out of his litter up until the neuter!

What really bothered me is his vet suggested a prescription kitten food for GI issues (dry food). I feel she is right it may stop diarrhea but I really dont want to give my kitten any crappy food and that includes dry food full of corn, soy, wheat etc. She is a humane society vet this was all free of charge and the big baggie of food but I don't feel comfortable putting him on crap food in hopes it will help. He likes Instinct Kitten pate right now.. has anyone had success with that food? I also have Fancy Feast naturals. He gets RX Clay now every day and pumpkin for diarrhea. And a proviable. I'm really hoping it was just the Wellness causing all of this but now because of the clavamox I feel it will be hard to tell :(

Hi,
I am not sure it is the Wellness food itself causing the diarrhea unless it is high in offal.
Probably more likely a combination of switching foods, the kitten being young and having leaving his mother early, he will have a more sensitive digestion for awhile, as he was not nursing from his mother when introduced to solids.
I had a similar issue with a kitten who was without his mother from about five weeks old.
Switching any food on kittens should be done slowly.

Can the vet or maybe someone on here recommend a probiotic or something along those lines. For diarrhea maybe something like Pro Kolin?

It's impossible to slowly introduce new food if the kitten decides it doesn't want a bottle or formula at all anymore and he was the only one that did that. The rest of the litter I bottle fed with their wet food until they were 8 weeks but he refused the bottle right at 5 weeks and only ate wet. Maybe 4 weeks on the same food isnt enough time but it seems like it definitely is I've been giving him probiotics too (proviable )

I've never heard of what you suggested but I'll look into it

Hi,
I meant by new food, Friskies at the vets vs what you were feeding at home. Better to stick to one food for awhile and later slowly introduce another.

Agree with you about not going down the dry food route.

Did the vet run any tests with stool samples?

Have you tried just boiled chicken (no bones) with broth for a few meals? That sometimes helps settle the gut.

If non parasitic diarrhea I find the Pro Kolin works quickly.

Well he was eating the same food from 5 to 9 weeks and just that 24 hours at the vet recently had different food.
I've never tried chicken like that at all. I havent eaten meat since I was a kid so I never have it.. I have cat man doo freeze dried chicken breast for pets though he really likes. I feed some if it as is to maybe help a little

Is this stuff the same thing? I h

Interestingly enough, I had been feeding Delilah Wellness and Wellness core the last few months. Her #2s were pretty stinky and a bit soft. I was going to put her back on probiotics but couldn't find where I put the box. Last week due to cost and portion control I decided to go back to Sheba (on Paw Diet Wellness and Sheba both had about the same amount of protein, less fat in Sheba though).

Since Delilah has been back on Sheba wet and Crave Indoor Dry (Crave still has dry cat food), her #2s are firm and nowhere near as stinky as they were.

Interesting. I completely removed the wellness and is only on instinct wet.. I also have fancy feast naturals I was going to offer and koha limited ingredient. It's hard to tell but I THINK his stools are better. Once he is off clavamox I'll know for sure but he seems to be going only once a day instead of 4x

Delilah has eaten both of those. I went with Sheba because it's portion controlled and I'm really bad with portioning wet food out (even with a scale). She needs to lose a little bit of weight. We used to use Crave wet before it was discontinued. For some reason Delilah doesn't like Nutro.

I'm in a small apartment. When her stomach is upset you can smell it EVERYWHERE and I have to run and scoop immediately to get rid of the smell.

You said you feed dry too? I've never seen a fat kitty on only wet 🤣 I refuse to let my new kitten even taste dry. The kibble addiction is real and I'll never let that happen again. maybe probiotics would help with the smell? And wet food produces smelly poops anyway because it's so meaty.

I'm definitely never buying wellness again even for the foster kittens. I think it made most of their poops bad :(

When I adopted Delilah she was eating both, mostly dry because the bully cats at the shelter would push her away from the "good stuff".

I don't give her a lot of dry. About 1tbsp lunchtime in a timed feeder while I'm at work (when I didn't, she decimated her cat grass), and another tbsp at 3am so she's not waking me up for food. I never free feed her - she's scheduled.

And taking her off the Wellness seemed to take care of the smell and firmness.

i have fed graycie wellness since i adopted at 5 months old only time she has had runny type poop issues was switching dry food brands to fast
It's fantastic food. But I think too rich for most. I think my boss at the time or vet tech co worker told me wellness wet they dont stock at the clinic because of too many complaints of loose stools

Hi,
Keep in mind kittens usually poo more than once a day. If I recall correctly at least twice. Once a day is normal for an adult.
You don't want loose stools though.
My two adults have Wellness Core as part of their rotation and are fine on it.
When my one cat was a kitten I feed a different brand wet food.
Glad his stools are better.
