Hello all, i thought that I would seek some advice or see if anyone is/has been in the same situation. I am looking after a male cat that was once a stray. He used to be incredibly nervious and shy but is now loveable and cuddly all the time. He's always had a big appetite and could go through 4 packets of wet food a day easily. However, he vomited 3 days ago and since then has not been eating properly at all. He acts starving by meowing at me, walking around the food bowls and swiping my hands if i take his bowl away. However, if i put any type of food in front of him, he smells it and then just looks at me. I managed to get him to have a few licks of gravy but that's it. He also smelt some the other day and gagged as if he was going to be sick, but wasn't sick in the end.

So yesterday i took him to the vet. They did a full checkup and said that he is healthy, a good weight, good colour, no teeth issues and they couldn't really explain what it is that's making him not eat. They gave him a anti-sickness injection and then an appetite tablet as well. A couple hours later he ate his way through a whole packet of food! Which was great. But the next morning (today) he's back to his same ways and not interested in food, just smells it and then walks away. What should i do?

Have you tried other food? Fancy feast pate is usually a hit. You can try heating up the wet food for 10 seconds to make it super stinky. Some weruva ones are stinky to. He will not want whatever he threw up on, you'll have to try different flavors or something else

Apologies I should have mentioned; I've tried multiple different foods. So he won't touch his normal crunchy biscuits, he won't eat biscuit treats (that contain chicken, they're called "Dreamies"), i've tried two different companies of wet food, with multiple different "flavours". I have blended one up in a food processor, i've drained the gravy from one and just given him that, and i have given him small pieces of hot and cold plain roasted chicken... But nothing. He'll somtimes lick a tiny bit of gravy, or lick a piece of chicken, but that's it. He ate a whole pack of the same wet food after his injection and tablet, but nothing the next day. He is still drinking water from his bowl now and then, but the vet did say he was dehydrated, but that's mainly because he would get most of his water from his wet food. Thanks for the suggestions though.

If the anti-sickness injection and an appetite tablet were fast acting, they likely only lasted in his system for a short period of time. And, he probably needs more anti-nausea and appetite stimulant meds to get him to keep eating.

The vet was probably hoping that these treatments would get him past whatever is wrong, and that he would return to normal - which he did not. You need to call the vet and let them know and ask what to do next. Next would be - at a minimum - more meds, but further investigation/testing is probably needed because there is a reason for his lack of appetite & the vomiting, and the meds are only addressing the symptoms, not the cause.

What is this full check up that was done by the vet? Did it include a CBC & Super Chem blood work, & urinalysis (and maybe even a fecal check)? If all those were done and nothing showed up amiss, I would think the vet might want to suggest x-rays and possibly an ultrasound.

Did they do an x-ray to check for a blockage or gas build up in his tummy?
