We recently picked up this handsome feline and he is 8 weeks old, I believe he is ta least half Maine Coon, he has the M on his head the thick thick fur, pointed ears, the tufts of hair between his toes, etc. I've compared pics to other Maine Coon Kittens and he resembles a lot of them to a T. Also has so many features that I've read on Maine Coon Cats. Can anyone help me with this? Thank you

Hi! What a gorgeous kitten. I would say you’ve got a Domestic Longhair. Paw and ear tufts are not specific to
Main Coones, and keep in mind that most cats are not one specific breed, nor are they a mix of breeds.
Im sure someone who can explain it better will come along. I am not an expert :)

Yes now that I'm looking at pictures of other domestic long hair kittens I do see the resemblance, it's just very confusing because again I know nothing about cat breeds and it looks like Maine Coon and Domestic long hair have a lot of the same features and I know the M is tabby 🙂

No worries! I think everyone here will agree that cat genetics are incredibly complicated. You could always do a DNA test if you wanted to know for sure.
They can definitely have very similar features, but most of the time if a cat doesn’t have papers saying it’s a purebred, it most likely isn’t a purebred. (Not always, but usually). About five percent of cats are purebred. Hope this helps :)

His proper identification is “adorable”!

I agree with BellaGooch BellaGooch that he is a Domestic Longhair. If you post a sideview picture, we can identify his exact pattern. Maine Coons have a broader muzzle than your kitten, I think.

I don’t see any indication of Maine Coon ancestry in your kitten. A lot of the traits commonly associated with Maine Coons (ear tufts, toe tufts, fluffy necks) are common in domestic longhairs of no specific breed ancestry.
He has a very sweet face (i.e. small/narrow muzzle), and his head, eyes, and ears don’t have any of the shapes I’d expect from a young MC kitten.
A 2 month old MC kitten will have large, very defined ears, the distinct eye shape of the adults, a large muzzle, and start visually having the adult head shape, including a flat head between the ears. By this age, they’ll also weigh 1.1 to 1.5kg (2.4 - 3.3lbs) on average, depending on sex, which is uncommon for random bred cats.

Lack of breed ancestry doesn’t make your kitten any less special, though! He’s adorable, and I hope you enjoy many wonderful years together :>

You mentioned the M as a strong indicium he is a Maine Coon. This is actually a myth, - I think mentioned in a popular TV-programme, the 101 cats??

M is the common for all tabies. Maine Coon have them often, because MCO are often tabbies... But its NOT specifically for them.

Of course, them being longhairs, its often difficult to see what type of tabby they are. So its nice to at least the this M and at least KNOW they are a tabby.

I agree with the others, he is very sweet, but not a MCO. IF he grows visibly big, visibly bigger than most other cats, we will presume he probably has some MCO ancestry, but not even this is ironclad: there ARE biggish moggies too...

Brown household longhair tabby. Also, the Maine coon "M" is a myth.
