My cat developed allergies and the vet told us to switch to a limited ingredient food without poultry, so we found weruva. He hasn’t shown any allergy symptoms yet on this diet but it’s still too soon to tell at this point. My question is about the calorie content of his food. This is 61kcal per can, and it says to feed 3 cans a day (3oz). He is 9 months old, 10 lbs and this adds up to less than 250 calories per day for him atm. I actually didn’t realize the food was this low in calories, we were pretty much just focusing on finding something without bird protein and fillers.

I know the debate still rages on about whether feeding wet food alone is ok for a cat, I tend to lean towards it being ok. I think the argument that you need dry food to clean their teeth is like cat food propaganda to make you buy their products. You can give a cats stuff to chew on like you do with dogs to help with that or just brush their teeth. Anyways I’m losing my train of thought...

I know you guys aren’t vets but what’s your personal opinion about this diet? He gets some treats during the day so there are some additional calories there.

Hi. I can't speak to that food specifically, but if he acts like he needs more food, feed it to him. He is still growing! It does sound like it might be a tad too little.

For the most part, people talk about giving a kitten some dry food to allow them to munch on it if they get hungry between meals. So, if there is a dry Weruva equivalent you could give him some just to 'tide him over' between his wet food meals. It would be a good way to see if the amount of canned you are giving him is enough to satisfy him - if it is, he likely won't eat the dry food. At any rate, you can always cut out the dry when he is a bit older. If there is not an equivalent add a little more wet food - or, perhaps another meal - to his daily food intake and see how that goes.

Some of the seemingly non-chicken labeled Weruva varieties contain chicken and other poultry in small amounts. Read the label. Weruva does have 5.5 oz cans which are closer to 100-ish or so calories and 10 oz cans which are closer to 200-ish calories. Not all varieties are available in these larger can sizes.

You can also look at Soulistic which is made by the same company as Weruva. The varieties nearly identical, just different names and slightly different ingredients. Soulistic also costs a bit less than Weruva.

You can try other LID foods that don't contain chicken / poultry.

I was told the baseline for calories is 20 calories per pound of their optimum weight. So for my tabbico, that's about 240 calories a day. But for my grey tabby, if I fed her only that she would poke me in the face with a paw at 3am for noms, so she gets a little more. I'd say try that as a baseline and if they are acting like they constantly need more, then give them more!

You have the right idea. Dry food is like eating candy. It gets stuck in your teeth/molars then you have cavities. My cats are on wet only. Unfortunately it depends on your budget. Not everyone can afford it. Though is cheap canned food better than dry? I remember one vet telling me that since cats cannot digest starches it is dissolved so weight should not be too much a worry. It's all a debate

When I had to allergy test Delilah we used Koha or Lotus Just Juicy. They both have single protein no chicken foods. I think Lotus had a dry without chicken. For a dry we were using Fussie Cat quail and duck.

I feed my cats Weruva exclusively now. I literally buy all the pate ones that are chicken based. I feed them one flavor per meal per day (I feed twice a day). So 14 flavors per week. They eat it all immediately. With having the variety and not getting the same stuff several times a week has eliminated the picky eating issue completely.

I saw the post about it being low calories and higher price. Yes but it is worth it to me. Boone could stand to lose some pounds and Gracie is a skinny mini and doesn't require a ton of calories anyway. I supplement with either Dr Elsey or Tiki Cat dry food. Half a cup of dry in a bowl lasts several days so they are not acting like they are starving on Weruva.

I hope you find a solution to your feeding issue. Makes life easier when there is one less thing to worry about. :)

I tried the Weruva. Delilah loved it for 2 weeks then refused to touch it again. Little miss fussy pants... Odd part its it's the only pate she's willingly eaten (the hydrating mousse).

If this will help allay your fears........ here are pics of greg and arnold (20 and 22 lbs), they have eaten cases and cases of weruva paw licken chicken 10 oz cans and seem to have suffered no calorie deficit. Lol

I thought I kept a lot of food on hand at one time. I am lucky though as I use 3 oz and 5 oz cans and pouches so it doesn't take up a lot of room. Boone and Gracie turned one in March and Boone is up to 16 lbs yet he eats the same amount of food as his sister and she is 9 lbs. I think Boone is just going to be a tank and isn't fat at all (despite what the rest of my family says).

16 lbs at one year old.......he' s going to be a big boy. Greg was 16 lbs and arnold 19 pounds at 1 and a half years old, when we adopted them.

I bought that much weruva at one time as there was a very good promotion on it. I think that amount was about 700 dollars instead of about 900 dollars. We latter switched to merrick as I wanted a back up manufacturer in case I couldnt get the weruva.

After a year or so of merrick, i have started feeding the boys the weruva again and they still love it. I think the weruva paw licken chicken is better food than most, including the merrick. I will alternate between weruva and merrick, that way I can be fairly certain of always finding at least one brand. (Covid has made it clear not to depend on only one source).

The 10 0z cans are cheaper per oz than the smaller cans.

Interesting note: weruva also make paw licken chicken for dogs and it is MUCH cheaper than that for cats. The ingredients for the dog chicken licken weruva are identical to that of the cats' chicken liken........except the dogs' verion has no taurine (I think thats the ingredient). Cats must have this ingredient. I even thought of buying the dog chicken licken and adding taurine. I did not go that route as I could not be certain I was actually being sold taurine and I did not know exactly how much to add to the cats' food.

That would be awesome if I could find a promotion like that.

ladytimedramon ladytimedramon Pet Supplies Plus is awesome. I signed up for their text alerts and regularly get 10-15% off codes and occasionally coupons for free treats. They only carry BFF and the Weruva Classic line at the local store unfortunately.

It was a buy four cans get one free deal. Not a huge savings but still a help. The sale only happens about twice a year, where I am.

The problem with buying such large quantities at one time is if your cat (s) suddenly decides they no longer like the food, you are out alot of money.

Yes but I make them eat it anyway. I don't throw out unused cans. My cats have been through the drill enough to know that I have taken note of their displeasure with the food and won't buy it again but they still have to eat what I currently have on hand.

I don't think I would ever buy that much though. I currently buy 21 flavors at a time in 8 or 12 can/pouch packs. That is about $300 spent and it lasts several months depending on if it is a 3oz or 5oz can/pouch.
