Many of us are already activists and members of Alley Cat Allies, the global database for cat advocacy. For those who aren't yet members, I can't urge you strongly enough to get involved in whatever way(s) you can and share with others who are interested in advocating for/caring about cats. They can't keep themselves safe from the many threats to their lives and wellbeing. It takes a global village. That village is US. PLEASE, get involved. They need us.

Alley Cat Allies
I took my TNR online courses that was a collaboration between them and local cat advocacy groups. I got my TNR certification after I finished the online course. Alley Cat Allies is always on the for front of dealing with difficult feral cat situations all across the USA.

In the last year, some states are going backwards in how they deal with outdoor kitties. New York state is one of them. They are now talking about culling feral cats. They are looking into "low culling" methods. I am livid about this!!! Healthy cats and kittens should never be euthanized to keep the population down. Only cats that are very sick or badly injured where euthanization seems like the only humane solution after weighing in all medical options.

Thank you for this thread. For those who don't know about Ally Cat Allies, please go to their website. You can donate to this wonderful organization. Please also look into getting TNR certified like I did, if you truly want to help the cats in your area. Be a hero to your community cats.🙂

Couldn't agree more, Whenallhellbreakslose Whenallhellbreakslose and as with almost everything in this society complete and total disregard for the will of the majority and the rule of compassion and decency rule the day. It is a FELONY to kill ANY cat in all 50 US States. A FELONY. But these cat-haters are deaf and blind to that. THEY are the criminals. THEY are the ones who, even under this society's system, should be prosecuted and punished.

We are living in a dark age where hatred, violence, and turmoil rule the day. I see so many living without a moral compass, not caring that what they do affects others around them--even the animals. There are good, decent people out there, but they are becoming so few and far in between these days. We are regressing as a society, I am afraid, not progressing. SMH! :disappointed::sigh: I worry for future generations and the world they will inherit. We need to do better as a society! The animal's suffering is just a sign of how sick we are becoming.

Okay, I will get off my Soapbox now. I hope I didn't depress anyone. Thank you once again for putting up this thread

And I do too. But there are a lot of people coming up now who get it, are learning it, and are coming up with some pretty amazing ideas for improving life for all. You don't see these accounts as front-page news because it's not sensationalistic and we all know "if it bleeds, it leads." But it's happening; and people in every generation, walk of life, race, creed and color are quietly going about the work we all share in. I try to point them out and give them props when I can and when it's appropriate, as many of them work under the radar and it wouldn't be appropriate to out them.
What I'm saying, though, is that all is not dark. And all is not lost.

There is way too much negativity in the news. We need to get back to the basics. Get back to being civil to one another and working together to better society. There is too much divisiveness and it affects every area--even helping animals. It breaks my hearts to see people shut other people out for little to no reason. Totally shutting out what could happen if you could join forces and work for the greater good.

My deepest respect to those who "get it" and go quietly about their business doing what they believe is thir mission here on earth. These people truly walk the walk. God bless them. 🙂

Agree 100%, and count both of us, and a lot of others here at TCS, among that group. I've been doing advocacy for more years than I care to think about, seeing the same issues that "should be" basic fought over and over again. A few years back, for instance, the fur industry was under siege. Now it's screamed back again with a lot of "celebs" that could be using their voices and their backs to send a message, being silent and wearing fur. So we're fighting that battle all over again. A few years ago, there were advocates in the LA shelters. Then they kicked them out and shut down spay/neuter vouchers etc. Then along came COVID and our terrible Surgeon General decreeing spay/neuter "elective" and I, along with many others, quaked in our boots, thinking of all the innocent lives that would be born, only to be lost, to overpopulation. And a lot have been. And COVID is far from over. But SO MANY warriors are in the trenches doing all they - we - can for those lives. And it is a lot better than it could have been if everyone had thrown up their hands and given up.
It doesn't stop. WE don't stop.

Ikr. These setbacks due to the Pandemic and the growing number of selfish people who are not doing the right like the Celebrities you pointed out are really frustrating to see. You know the saying, " You take two steps forward, then three steps back.":frustrated::sigh: I hate seeing progress go down the drain, and regressive policies replacing the ones that were actually helping the situation( like what NYS is considering doing to the feral cats).:fuming:

I have a crazy idea that I want to bring up. What if there were incentives given for practicing TNR. I am thinking of something like Tax Credit or Deductions for Community Service Work (tnr). Where a requirement of TNR Certification, proof of trapping, and a copy of the Vet or Clinic bill must be presented. This may be out there, but we need more people helping to keep the feral population in check . Anyway, just a crazy idea at the top of my head. I wish this could be possible.

I got to log off and feed the kitties again. I may not be back on tonight, let me know your thoughts on this. I really like to know. 🙂

My thoughts, as you can predict, are complete agreement. It not only makes sense from the compassion and caring standpoint and the legal standpoint, but also from the financial standpoint, as lethal methods COST MORE than TNR and caring communities managing colonies. And then there's the proven fact (throughout the millenia) that cats control rodent populations, keeping communities cleaner, with less vector-borne/caused diseases. This is a major reason why Disney, a huge corporation and not one I'm thrilled about on other levels, maintains TNR'd colonies in their amusement parks. These working cats are key players in helping to keep those parks clean, orderly, and "pest"-free. It's also why many farms, breweries, and other businesses maintain working cats, and why smart, caring animal advocacy organizations have working cat programs.

It is utter lunacy, the trap and euthanize method!!! It has been proven in many places over and over that it doesn't work. It only creates a vacuum effect where new cats move in to the area after the old colony is gone.

In my area there is over-development going on. Old houses are razed to the ground and bigger, more modern houses are built in their place. All this overbuilding seems to attract mice and rats. The cats have kept the rodent population down. I seen them kill rats! They are doing a service to the community. Ofcourse, hateful fools are completely oblivious to this. I live near a RR that has a a semi-wooded area, the cats keep the rodent population there in check as well. Did people forget about the Bulbonic Plague and how culling all those cats in Europe only increased the rat population who carried the disease which caused a very deadly pandemic. 😬 We are our own worst enemy it seems.

Not a fan of Disney either, but I give the props for keeping the cat colony in their Park to do what is completely natural for them to do. Also, thankful for other businesses who keep cats around for these reasons. A couple years ago, I passed one of those housing construction sites where a new house was being put up. I discovered that the Contracting company kept a few cats on the property. They gave the cats shelter and food and a place to do their business while the cats did there rodent control. They also had a safe place in the day for them, so the cats where out of the way of the workers. 👏👏👏 Smart people! They get it.

Well, have a good evening. I am only going to be on her for a short while. Hope all is well. Take care.🙂

Great thoughts and true facts. What's that they said about those who don't learn from history being doomed to repeat it? My own feelings/thoughts/beliefs are that each life is sacred and that I love all cats, so I want to respect and protect them and keep them safe via education and advocacy. One of my exes was a finish carpenter at one time, and he brought home his construction site cat, who was a big laid-back marmalade guy, and very lovable.
The development boom is crazy and of course, I am a ferocious proponent of Zero Population Growth, which would make life much better for everyone and possibly save this planet. The number of "celebs" having kids like there's no tomorrow certainly doesn't help, nor does so many people wanting to emulate them by building bigger houses. That's a major problem here. And now, with the overpopulation and poverty and homelessness, they're asking people about what we think on those issues. I always share my thoughts with them, but no way are people going to do the right thing and cut down on the births.
Cats help humanity in so many ways -- and even if they didn't, they have as much right to live and be protected as everyone else. I am torn up by every instance of abuse/neglect of cats. So I will always work to change this as much as I can.

Some Hardware stores here feed and shelter cats- which I found nice and clever from the business perspective.
I joined the movement Alley Cat Allies few minutes ago, for information purpose only. Apparently, they are US-oriented only.

Here in Europe there are plenty of general animal welfare associations (e.g, Vier Pfoten) but no cat-specific ones as far as I am aware. Does anybody know one? Thank you!

Thank you and much credit to you, solomonar solomonar ! Alley Cat Allies has its headquarters in USA but is global in perspective and outreach. We (I am a member) started here but our aim and goal is to educate globally and protect globally, which is occurring now and will only expand more and more. It is a membership-based-and-funded organization, so it receives no funding from the government, only from members. I don't know of any cat-specific organizations in Europe, but you can use your computer's search engine to search this topic specific to your country or area, or Europe-wide.
Again, THANK YOU for joining ACA!!!

tarasgirl06 tarasgirl06 Nice words!
I will thoroughly read the TCA rows on the website. Perhaps opening a chapter in Europe may be worth exploring.
My non-profit, which serves primarily small rural communities will be happy to cooperate in this matter.
As a matter of fact, my search on the internet didn't return any relevant organisation in Europe,

Big props to you for your non-profit! and for searching. (A lot of people don't. Why do we even have search engines, I wonder? :sigh:) You might want to put the idea before Becky Robinson, who's the founder of ACA. They are very busy all the time, understandably, but I do have confidence that you'll get feedback.

Organizations I am aware of (internet search) mix cats with dogs or are all-pets or all-animals welfare ones (i.e. chicken :-)).
The European Union is a nightmare when it comes to alliances and coalitions.

I love all animals, but I have a soft spot on cats.
A friend of mine wanted to adopt a cat and it was difficult to find one in "controlled" terms. Picking one from an internet adoption site was not advisable, because one cant choose based on fur color and age criteria alone.
In brief, there is a lot to be done here, and the work must be focused on cats, in my humble opinion.

Thank you very much for your help!

Cats have always been my best friends and my family. In my family, on both sides, going back ???, cats have always been loved and rescued by us.
I like all animals except the canids (dog family) and yes, I agree that cats, the world's most beloved companion animals, need more specific advocacy organizations, rescues and sanctuaries. I've never been a fan of "purebred" because every cat is wonderful and deserves a loving permanent home. While people buy cats from "breeders" it means cats in shelters and at large are not adopted. That means they lose their lives or languish in less-than-optimal care. With one excpetion that I know of, we've always opted for "rescued" as our favorite "breed" and I always will.
