I rescued my cat from a shelter but have never been able to pinpoint what breed he resembles most. He seems to have Maine coon qualities but (in my amateur opinion) lacks the facial structure that most Maine coons have. I have seen other cats that look just like him, which leads me to believe there is a breed other than Maine coon that he resembles more closely. Any ideas?

For size reference, he's 20 pounds, about 13" long from base of neck to base of tail, his tail is about 12" long, and he is about 12-13" tall from the floor to the top of his back.

Heya! He looks like a DLH to me :> it’s fairly common for longhairs, especially from the states, to share features with the Maine Coon breed, as they were developed from a landrace of cats local to Maine and the other cold places in the area (please don’t hurt me, I’m not from the US, so no clue about states and climates haha).

I’m struggling to describe his colour and pattern, especially given how different he looks between photos. Best guess is a low contrast classic tabby. With the actual colour, I’d guess blue from the first two photos, but he looks way more like a silver tabby in the third. Is there a significant difference in the lighting in those photos?

Yes, there is a lighting difference between the 1st/2nd and the 3rd pictures. The first two are in nearly direct sunlight while the third was taken at night so the lighting is from the house lights. His actual coloration is closer the third picture, as his coat is washed out in the first two pictures due to the bright light and slight glossiness of his fur.

DLH to me too. Blue, but I also see tabby stripes. I'm not great at being specific past that.
His body is quite cobby and I don't see anything in his facial structure that resemble a Maine Coon either. The MC tends to be long, lean and athletic although with so much fur they sometimes look much larger than they actually are.
Cats are not domesticated the same way dogs have been and basically domesticated themselves. Only about 1-3% of cats are purebred and unless one has seen papers on the cat or it's family, it's considered a domestic as lineage is the only way to prove breed.
He's a nice looking cat though, looks huggable!
Would be very unlikely to even have a mix. Every breeder I know of keeps strict control over their cats and all litters are intensely planned; who will mate with who and when. Just because a cat has certain attributes seen in a purebred cat doesn't mean much since those things are found widely in cat populations across the world.

He's so handsome!

I would also describe him as a blue classic tabby domestic longhair. He doesn't appear to be silver tabby to me... normally a silver tabby would have a much lighter ground color. I'm not seeing obvious signs of Maine Coon ancestry in this cat. He has his own special look :)

I would agree blue classic tabby. The floofers tend to really blend in their markings. He's not overweight hey? Just big boned? If you are in the US there is actually a lot of MC's in bloodlines there but it doesn't mean mix, he could have only 10-20%. Siberians are also bgi longhair cats.

Thanks for all the responses, they've been very helpful! He has a bit of a primordial pouch but most of his weight is his frame and muscle. Very mild-mannered/playful for a stray, which is why I thought he might have some of the MC spirit!

Haha, well lots of cats are very spirited! Our purebred Maine Coon is the opposite of what people usually think is their usual personality. In other words, she is aloof and by no means cuddly. Can hardly stand being pet for more than a few seconds unless it's on the top of her head (tho oddly does like tummy rubs sometimes). Everything is done on her terms. She's very sweet and gentle but she's excellent in the attitude department
