Good Afternoon Everyone,

This is going to be about my mothers just turned 21 cat Miss Piggy , She had what she thought to be a Very bad case of dandruff and since she is 21 years old she does not take her to the vet anymore and rarely has to be honest however , i was just combing her and noticed the some of the white coming off on the comb was darker in nature and had a brownish hue to it and THEY WERE MOVING , ugh, so i will be posting some pics of this and was hoping that someone could tell me what we are dealing with here Lice ? Some comes off when you comb but most you can comb and comb and it does not come off .. She eats two to three times a day so no problems there,....

Also what could be some at home treatments to get rid of this as now it is realy alot of it goin on and now that as of this morning i know it is moving something has to be done as it is just not dandruff as thought ?

Pics coming soon

Alot of what you see is of a lighter white and does not come off unless the fur comes off , but some are more brownish and they are the ones mostly that come off with combing and that i just found out today are moving ..

Could be fleas, how do they move? Are they wiggly, do they jump, do they run away?

You have to be careful with flea treatments at that age, but also have to be careful of fleas because they can cause anemia.

They are just the brownish white little specs you see in the pics and they are squirming around , look maybe like tiny pieces of rice perhaps that type of shape to them .....

I have experienced lice in abandoned kittens. They are smaller than fleas (and flea dirt) and attach themselves to hair. The treatment took rather a long time but I will look up the data sheets if you are interested. I think the vet identified them under a microscope.

Thank you very much that would be awesome, also the ones that were moving on the plate i sprayed them with collidal silver and it killed them so i sprayed some on her, ............ yeah most of this stuff that is on her that is bright white is attached to the hair and will not comb off but the brownish ones that do come off they are the ones that are moving, just look like squirming tiny pieces of brown rice..

You really have to be very careful because of her age. I don't recommend using any OTC pesticide products without a vet's recommendation.

Dawn (don't use a citrus scent! Apple scented and blue are fine, other non-citrus should be ok too) is usually safe if you rinse it very well. Make sure she's dried thoroughly so she doesn't get chilled.

Will the dawn kill the lice ? Also do you think it would remove the white on the fur that will not comb off

The white things on the fur are nits (lice eggs). They won't come off until they hatch. Combing will get some but not all. So you'll have to bathe her again after they hatch, probably once a week for a couple months.

The soap won't kill the lice, but it should wash some away and drown some. I don't know if they're as drown-resistant as human lice are; fleas are drowned pretty easily though. Keep the soap on for 5 minutes to maximize bug mortality.

I don't know if that will be enough to totally get rid of the lice so I do think you should at least call the vet to ask what they recommend.

What are your thoughts on just shaving the fur and letting it grow back that also was a thought of mine

Any idea of what you would consider Safe for a 21 year old that would kill the lice ?

Ok decision time ................... she went to the vet and it is lice and the vet wants to use revolution on the lice , she said she thinks they can be gone with 1 dose in a month, but might need 1 more dose after the 1st 30 days ............also she has a small open wound that has been around for a while that she wants to treat with a antibiotic shot, ............. Can someone give me advice on whether or not they would give revolution topical to a 21 year old and also the antibiotic which i know will kill some of the good bacteria to.. i have bad expieriences with giving older cats conventional vet treatment in the past and this is difficult because i know now why she has been biting and goin through it..............any thoughts on what to do about this treatment will be MUCH APPRECIATED

I wouldn't use Convenia on an older cat if she's at all medicatable. She can have oral antibiotics, not the injection. And you can give probiotics to keep her gut bacteria healthy.

I'd be very leery of using Revolution on an older cat, but she can't go on with lice either. So what I would do is ask the vet what to do if she has a bad reaction. I think Revolution can be washed off in the first 24 hours but I'm not positive. I also wouldn't give it to her until she's done with the antibiotics.
